cultural appropriation tends to put up more barriers than it brings down. "you cant have dreads, your white" "you can't have chinese symbols tattooed on you, you arent chinese", i just dont see how telling someone 'you can't do something because of the colour of your skin' is progress.

Cowboy culture as we know in the US came from Mexico and before then it came from Spain. I always find it weird that people in the US think it came straight from Europe. It's like someone coming into high school one day and making Emo punk style popular in that school but when one of the people who got influenced by him gets asked where he got that style from he says it's from a Celebrity when he clearly got it from that one guy who made it popular in his school in the first place. I am a white guy, and "cultural appropriation" is one of many reasons I avoid talking to people my age anymore. It's really difficult to talk to a lot of young'uns.
People have massive egos, and they jump to wild conclusions with no basis at all. I've been called a racist, a bigot, this, that, and the other thing. I am none of those things, I am a fair person to all.
It just doesn't make sense that this crowd of hypersensitive college kids thinks they will solve anything by viciously hating everybody who is a white man. Hate hasn't solved anything, ever. It certainly won't solve whatever issues these poor young people are in the streets screaming about.

Am African and I'm amazed at how petty and silly such a pertinent issue is being made to seem. Who cares about why a Chinese dude thinks dreadlocks are cool? And how is that not even a celebration of black culture? Cultural appropriation as an argument, in my opinion, would be better used to shine a spotlight on the separation of a people from their culture in such a way as to possibly rob them of their identity. Like how the internet says that "the claim that Ancient Egypt - particularly the Old Kingdom - was black" is an anachronism. That as black people, we cannot claim Ancient Egyptian Civilization as whites claim Ancient Greek Civilization because the concepts of black and white are a modern-day construct. And personally I think that argument is STUPID. The white people who say that probably went to school and ought to know better!

The celebration would lose its power, history, and soul really fast. The reason it is so honored and revered is because it has been held within a culture and a belief system that is unique to Mexico. I think it would get watered down and the meaning would be lost. From my experience as an outsider, it seems to be rooted in having strong ties to family, ancestors, Catholicism, and death all of which are mostly absent in life from my perspective, as a white woman in the USA.

'Culture' is literally the things that an ethnic group make available for other ethnicities to consume. Within a culture's own existence these things are called tradition, not culture. Culture exists to be appropriated, or more commonly, shared with others to shine a light on the best practices arising from other ethnic or geographic groups/locations. And Jeremy Lin is an example of what happens when you pay a little attention in college, instead of just enjoying the free ride like K-Mart apparently did.

Honestly people take cultural appropriation to the extreme, And that’s when it becomes so damn stupid and ridiculous as shit fr. If you’re wearing sacred items that are not to be worn as costumes, taking a different culture and making it your own, using that certain culture to make fun of it, making racist remarks about it, claiming that culture would “look better” if you make changes to it, exploiting the culture, or benefiting off of it without knowing the some of the struggles behind certain cultures, THEN it’s cultural appropriation. The whole damn world is a melting pot of different cultures. There is not one culture in The entire human race that does not practice or use different cultures when it comes to their different lives. The music, the clothing, the food, the movies, the TV shows, the arts, whatever, it’s all a mix of different cultures. I’m Hispanic/ Mexican with some Indigenous blood, and I love it when people show admiration and love for Mexican culture as long as they’re not disrespecting it or being racist towards it, this whole cultural appropriating is going way too far and it’s starting to become racist. Also, a lot of the claims of cultural appropriation are not even coming from the people that you use the culture from, it’s coming from supreme white liberals who are taking it way too far. To the liberals who act like that: YOU DO NOT SPEAK FOR THE CULTURE. Just stfu and quit acting like you are the supreme authorities on what is cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. Just please shut up. People like that are the ones who divide people. Culture is what brings people together, and when we share different cultures and show appreciation and love for them, we make this world including our nations even more beautiful. For me I love Japanese culture, I deeply admire and appreciate it for the art, history, and way of life. What got me into Japanese culture as a kid What is the love for the samurai class. Hell my dad made me a whole samurai armor because I was obsessed with samurai warriors as a kid. Are liberals going to claim that I was culturally appropriating Japanese culture because I wanted to dress like a samurai, simply for admiring them, appreciating them and loving them? Ridiculous as hell. At this point cultural appropriation is just stupid, knock it off and quit making it into something that it is not. Unless there is blasphemy, racism, and disrespect, then it’s not cultural appropriation. If you worried that you’re culturally appropriating something, look into the culture and learn about it, the dues and don’ts of what you’re supposed to do, and how you can show respect and appreciation. SIMPLE!

I got home I started a Polynesian inspired clothing brand that promotes Mental Health and Physical fitness as equal partners. Gotten really amazing and positive feedback but got 1 person saying I was doing culture appropriation. They were so nasty and mean to me. I am 100% percent with Rogan. People should not be limited on what they should wear, especially in a country like the United States, where the exchange of cultural ideas is inevitable. My father, when he was a 16 year old political prisoner in Cuba at La Cabaña, would always see people getting sent to UMAP concentration camps for having long hair and wearing distinct clothing, be it religious attire or for being part of the general counterculture. My family, as well as many other immigrant families, sure as hell did not come to America in order to face other groups of people who wish to dictate forms of expressions after the hell we've faced in our home countries... That being said, it is extremely important to give credit to the origins of where certain apparel and aesthetic practices come from, as well as preventing exploitative behaviors that stem from ignorance- but that lies in education, not harassing people who are genuinely interested in participating in other cultures.

I am in my late 60s and taking a fiction writing class at a local community, and I never heard this term before. Because I'm into Asian things, I often place some of my characters in places I've been to in Asia. So, one kid in my class says, "We have to consider 'cultural appropriation'." So, I asked what that was. When he "explained" it, I literally flipped out! Really! I'm tiny - only 4'9" (technically a midget - not a dwarf). And I'm old and short and female. I couldn't stand it, and I leaped from my chair and jumped into the middle of the room and shouted, "That's the most stupid thing I have ever heard! So, you mean, I can only write about old white women?" (I forgot to mention the midget part.) Then I ranted "And don't you DARE put an old person into your stories because you have NO clue what it's like to be old." And I had handed out a couple of my papers that I had set in China, and literally grabbed them back from two "Asian -half" girls, and said, "I'll take these back! I wrote about China! Of course, it's not a real story, because it's a FICTION class, but I'll take them back!" And I grabbed them and kept ranting, and I think this week I might be deleted from the class... But I thought it was the stupidest thing I ever heard. I couldn't believe it. So, now no one can write anything unless it is about YOU. I was so angry. Not to mention I was raised back east (I'm in California now), and it was totally multi-cultural where I came from. If you were in Italian neighborhood, you knew not to futz with the Mafia, you went and had some good Italian food, or got a great apartment because it was a nice neighborhood. I mean the Poles (Polish), the Irish, the Blacks, the Jews, a whole slew of different cultures easily lived side-by-side and it was great! But now??? Man, this is BS. I cannot believe people are doing this. And you're right - it's not even THEIR culture! What is this about? So, this old lady went bonkers on these young kids, but having grown up during the 60s when people were into all cultures and now to be told you can't be in ANY culture but your own is totally nuts!! Thanks for ranting, too! :D Lily

Then they come out with air Force ones, baggy jeans, a golf shirt, anime hoodie and hoop earrings they also had there hair in dreads.. as that's what happened to it naturally in the jungle .. so they come out dressed like that to join society.
