Playstation won't spin CD? | Here is what you need to know

- This Playstation wouldn't start the CD spinning when I closed the lid. I ruled out the actual motors and the lid switch before moving on to check the voltage to the chip responsible for driving the CD.

The schematic for the BA6397FP CD driver confirmed pins 11 and 12 are for the spindle motor, pins 17 and 18 are for the sled motor. There was no voltage on pins 21 and 22 (VCC) so I suspected the power rail was at fault. I found it almost impossible to trace the rail so I started looking at the fuses around the CN602 connector. A blown fuse and dry joint on an adjacent inductor were replaced and fixed. The console now has power to the CD drive and thankfully after all of that the CD reads discs.
Thanks for watching!
Found the video helpful?
Say thanks with a small tip.

Where did you get the fuses?
@@keegsmusic8165 i get most of my supplies from AliExpress
@@PhilipBryden ok thanks for the reply, I got two that are being difficult and I’m just not sure where to find the right ones, they both have the same issue in your video
could try console5
Nice chilled out vid and excellent fix! 👍
Glad you enjoyed it! I did look through my old videos and found the fuses were bought for a PSOne which had a blown fuse and shorted cap. It goes to show, always buy extra.
It solved my problem. Thank you very much! 🙂
Excellent news. 👍
Nice! Hey Philip do you have a go to site for schematics on ic’s or just type in browser for what ic your looking for?
Hello Edward. No specific site, I just google the chip number and hope for the best.
Ok thanks!
@@edwardreichard3852 Are you looking for something in particular?
@@PhilipBryden no ,Just wanted to know , I figure eventually I need too
1:26 anyone know what this button he is pressing is called/where i can find one?
What games do you remember most fondly on the Playstation? Mine must be Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy 7 and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Driver, Toshenden, Tekken, Die hard Arcade and ...... RIDGE RACER!!!
Tekken was very popular but I never enjoyed the fighting games. Colin McRae Rally was my personal favourite when it came to racing games.
Hi. Mine when I press the button from de lid it moves the lens, but not spin. Could be the same?
It might be the laser is faulty and doesn't know the CD is there.
@@PhilipBryden Changed the CD unit completely but the result is really the same. Maybe is the MODCHIP? Maybe i'll try to take it off.
Have you tested the fuses?
@@PhilipBryden not yet, gonna do it today, thanks... Tha strange thing is the lens still move, but no spin... Of the motor doesnt spin if the cd is not recognized by the console, maybe the modchip is faulty
@LiloVLOG any update? Same problem
What did you use to supply 3V to the motors? Could you share a link? Also for the schematic? Could you link that in the description
I have replaced the cd assembly multiple times now but the same problem happens
It spins the disc for ~3 seconds, then stops.
What could be the problem?
Power supply??
When you replaced the laser, did you use a new one and did you remove the solder blob from the new one fitting it?
I have a problem where my spindle will not stop spinning super fast, even with the lid open. It’s not the lid switch either; when I press that it activates the laser. I tested continuity and it makes contact with the power supply. I recapped the entries board as well.
Have you opened the system to look for signs of damage on the motherboard?
@@PhilipBryden I fixed the problem! A few weeks ago. I reflowed all the caps and it started working again. Not sure which cap was the culprit, because all showed continuity on the multimeter.
@@ResidentXombie Ah that's great news. Possibly something on the board causing a short which was dislodged or cleaned off while you were working on the caps.
4 wire chip, that's an Old Crow modchip! Early days there!
If the chip outputs 4 volts and the disk does not spin, what is the solution?
Hey mate do you think this would be easy for someone who knows nothing about circuit boards ? Just bought a ps1 but disc isn’t working 😢
You could trying following along with the video if you have a multimeter to check the fuses. Be careful with the power supply tho, it can give you a nasty shock, even when the system is turned off and un-plugged.
What did you use to supply 3V to the motors? Could you share a link? Also for the schematic? Could you link that in the description
He's using a bench power supply.
My favourite games Syphon filter, Dino Crisis, Silent hill, Odd world - Abe's oddysee. 12C508A Is a simple Mod chip (flashed, code written to it) to play backups/copies.
Very, very popular from early models to 9002 is what I can remember them being used in Phil! 👍🏻
I remember being incredibly infuriated with the combat on Silent Hill for the Playstation. That's if I'm rembering correctly lol. I will leave the mod chip. I like these original Playstations. I'm considering building the ultimate one, with the Xstation and HDMI mod.
Oh yes it was a little slow when it come to fighting with a knife, even the gun wasn't the best, it did kill the flying monsters easy. The Mod chip won't hurt it'll add some extra help if you ever buy any none UK game discs. If you do the Xstation & HDMI You'll see it'll have a nice improvement @ 720p :)
@@Ratchet_effect Good to hear I remember correctly. I played it until my character was fighting in a fairground I think, then gave up. Fantastic machine for the time.
Oh I hate that section If I remember it was a long time ago. I got stuck, glitched & I think and got eaten/killed a lot, oh yes now I remember, I was stuck/jammed by an iron girder of some graphical kind & it was dark as hell. Now I got to pull that game out and try play through it, I doubt my memory cards have the saves still its been hell of a long time, you started me off I gotta play it.
Thankfully I don't have the game, so I can't put myself through it lol
That mod chip might be to bypass or work around region encoding and, possibly, play burned copies of games.
@@hailme1 I never had a modded playstation but I do have a vague memory of people trying to swap discs mid load to use copy discs
Nice!!
Thank you for the sub. I subbed right back.
Hey man, just plugged my father's ps1 to see if it still worked and the answer is ¿? Like im scared to tell him it doesn't work because 100% he will blame it on me but like the console turns on and boots in the menu where you don't put a disc but also it doesn't spin the disc but makes a strange noise like a gear spinning but the disc isn't. The model is scph 7502 but I can't find anything online
I had a similar problem with my PSOne, it would not spin the disk and would only get to that menu screen.
What I did was clean the lense with isopropyl alcohol, adjust the potentiometer to give more power to the lense (1/8 of a turn) and made sure to hold the pin that checked if the lid was open. My console managed to read boot game's again, but with a very long loading screen. Was still happy to see that it worked tho 😎🤙
On mine, the little switch that detects the lid is closed had a little cover that broke off! The stem of the switch is still there though. Should I just chuck some hot glue or super glue on the plastic stem that pushes it down?
Does the bit that broke off stop the switch from working? Superglue is better than hot glue. Baking soda will set the superglue harder if the join needs extra support.
@@PhilipBryden Thanks for the reply! Nope, I got the broken pieces out. I just had an idea, I might glue some thick paper to the pusher. If that doesn't work, I'll try the super glue with bicarb soda. Thanks again!
@@TheHuntermj If you need to build something up, then the superglue baking soda is probably the best method. Try it on something else first tho. It's very strong.
@@PhilipBryden no probs, I was just thinking if it broke up, it would make a mess lol
It's too bad you didn't record the fuse replacement. I have a PS1 that needs 2 fuse replacements. Just waiting for them in the mail.
It's pretty straight forward with some low melt solder. I hope you get your system fixed. Good luck
@@PhilipBryden Thanks. I was able to replace CCP2E15 fuse and CCP2E20 fuse and now the control port and the memory card port work. It's a Japanese 7000 model PS1 with 110v power supply/ PU-20 board. I ordered a new step-down converter designed for PS1, Dreamcast and Sega Saturn consoles because my current step-down converter runs at 120watts and I'm worried it's too much for the power supply. Also I either need to re-grease the CD drive or get a new one. I'll keep you updated on my progress.
@@yanghao8351 That's a great result so far. I have an Xstation to go in one of mine, when I can be bothered to install it.
@@PhilipBryden Looking forward to the Xstation install video when you get a chance to install it.😀
Are you still alive? We haven’t seen you in awhile
Yes I'm still here. Just been doing other things. Hope thngs are good with you too.
What's the output voltage power supply PS1?
Because no run dick :-/
It's sound very low in the transformator power supply . It's OK all parts diods capacitors, resistors 1transitor 1 MOSFET .
Please help me engineer
Thanks
Don't try to fix it yourself, buy a replacement working one if you can. I think there are modern versions available now called Pico power supplies. Search on google for them. Good luck. Let me know what happens.
Can i sent you my ps1 for an fix damn i keep trying everything but i dont want to mess with solder all kind that i have no brain for that 😅
Sorry but I simply don't have the time to offer this type of service. What's wrong with the PS1?
@@PhilipBryden its not spinning the cd i did try the alcohol thing doesnt work . I bought last night for 30 euro the laser ksm 440 to replace it but im scared if i would replace that it wont work , finger cross
I hope a replacement one works out. Does the laser itself move up and down if you press the close lid switch.
@@marleycash4021 i bought a replacement on eBay, and it did not work. Don't waste your 30$.
@@PhilipBryden hi Phil. My laser moves perfectly fine, my rail and spindle motors as well (bench tested). It used to be an erratic disc spinning issue, then evolved into a non spin problem.
I'm no expert not hobbyist, but looking at my board, all looks in order.
I still did not voltage test legs 17 and 18 yet. Any advice?
While I do have a PS1 that doesn't spin I doubt I would be able to do this myself
I hope you can get it fixed by someone.
cool now i can play crash
Did you manage to fix your own console?
Probably laser is dead
1002 model LOL 😆
These are the best ones lol
@Philip Bryden so I have this issue but it's not the lazer at all as tried a new one same thing an
Start testing the fuses with a multimeter
