  • Blanda is normally considered a river where you fish sink tips and big flies. I could not agree less. Floating line and a riffling hitch is deadly! See for yourself.

is hitching the same as skating? we skate big Adult caddis patterns (size 6 to 10 longshank) here in South Africa on the Vaal river for small and large mouth yellowfish (3 to 20lb) normally late summer evenings when the caddis hatches can be epic in sheer quantity (profile is key and size). Are these fish rising for food or out of aggression (spawning) ? Great footage! Thanks....(i'm not a big fan of sinking gaudy flies and "flossing" salmon like they do in BC half the fun is in the presentation and working out how to get them to eat your fly!)

Hitching and skating is not them same even though hitch is a kind of skating. Skating is done with foam flies while hitch flies are very small and mostly invisible to the fish. They fish go for the V the fly make on the surface. The fly pattern does not matter much. That is the short version : )

@@nilsjrgensen9911 so you are looking for the emerging adult caddis bite...I use a poly yarn (same material used for tie in inline strike indicator) as a wing tied bend to eye over the stimulator hackles to great affect...lasts longer than traditional deer hair caddis ties and wicks water efficiently...was originally tied by a vaal guide I know (name escapes me for now he was a TCFF magazine field writer in the early 2000s ) IM me on facebook and ill send you the recipe. Was called the Hydrolater. Quite by mistake I ran out of White poly yarn and only had fluorescent orange left so tied a few xtras for a river trip with the bright orange wing....WOW....those xtra three "scrappies" where under high demand with my mates when they saw the takes...it has enough buoyancy to act as a decent strike indicator with a size 8 black PTN below it (tied inline to the Hydrolaters hook bend) as a dropper....deadly (the white polyarn tends to pick up dirt from the water and discolours quickly). You can drag free drift it through runs as well on a high stick method. With your technique just tie the fly you use in the video as the dropper... @jasonheyne or search Jason Karl Heyne on facebook...(profile pic is an xrayed cartoon fish black white and red....). ALSO....have you tried skating or or hitching mouse deer hair patterns? not sure if you have rodents around there....I have heard from some top guides how big brownies smash topwater mice patterns!!!!
