Your friendly neighbourhood ice-cream man, Ignazio

Ignazio's love for ice-cream developed at a very young age. After school he would go meet his dad, who was also an ice-cream man and spend the rest of the evening helping out. Doing so, he fell in love with the art of ice-cream making and decided to follow his father's footsteps. At the age of 17, he decided to chase his dream by buying his first van and start building his ice-cream empire. Since then, his business has flourished and Ignazio now sells every flavour of ice-cream that you can think of: vanilla (of course), lemon, strawberry, bubblegum, cherry, coconut, banana, pistachio...

This film is part of 1000 Londoners, a ten-year digital project which aims to create a digital portrait of a city through 1000 of the people who identify themselves with it. The profile contains a 3 minute film that gives an insight into the life of the Londoner, as well as their personal photos of London and some answers to crucial questions about their views on London life. Over the course of the project we aim to reveal as many facets of the capital as possible, seeing city life from 1000 points of view.

The old people love it
They come out marching for their ice cream

But I work here around Mitcham, Morden, Wimbledon
We do other things as well, we do events and weddings
and festivals and we've been everywhere
We've been up and down the country
I'm born here, fathers from Sicily, mothers from Ireland
Father was an ice-cream man
He started ice-cream in 1980
I used to go with him everyday
I finished school and I'd catch the bus instead of going home
I'd go and find my dad where he was on the rounds
and I'd spend the rest of the evening with him
Going out with my father all the time
I'd just enjoyed it, I loved it
and I just thought one day, I want to have an ice-cream empire
When I was 17 I bought my own ice-cream van
I did that for a number of years
and then um, I wanted to start producing ice-creams
and it's gone from nothing to a good little business
for us. You know for me and the family its been going
very well for us.
This one here, this is Greengrass
We named him
after Greengrass on heartbeat
Because he used to always drive that same
Morris commercial van
This one here is named Olivia, after my daughter
We got two of the same one, one is named Olivia
This one, and the other one is called Katherine that we have
Over the years I've seen kids who have been born
and, they're parents themselves now
with kids going to school
so you see a lot happening
when you're out on the streets everyday

We have a range of flavours
Up there we got my little Fiat 500
Which I bought 20 years ago from Sicily
That will be my little retirement vehicle
How did it get up there?
On the fork lift
Both kids have got them, the more newer Fiat 500's
One's got a red one, the other one's got a white one
Always Italian, always. It's in our heart, here.
My kids say dad you'll never retire and I say yes I will
No you won't dad
I will have to slow down, I won't do everything
But I will, I will do always something connected
with ice-cream
It's a happy product to make!
