It’s more the feeling you get from sensing grand and tragic contradictions. The tragedy being that the contradictions are… either too nuanced for or lost on society. The fireside, folksy delivery commenting how casually society regards the theme in general

"That funny feeling" is talking about something that has come to be referred to as "a boring dystopia". It's a primarily American concept, particularly because the dissonance is so pronounced within the U.S.
It's the fact that when we hear "dystopia", we think it's dramatic. We think it's explosions and end-time events. We have a cinematic view of robot revolutions and AI algorithm eugenics.
The reality is that we are already living in a slowly occurring dystopia. It's just "boring". Bo is pointing out the different, often contradictory aspects of a boring dystopia.
The grandness of having the world at your fingertips via the internet, yet global warming bringing "the ocean to your door". The normalization of gun culture manifesting as a gift shop at the gun range, while there is a shooting at the mall--a Mecca of capitalism.
8k resolution on a meditation app--something you're not even supposed to be looking at, something that is supposed to come from within.
"Twenty-thousand years of this, seven more to go" refers to the Climate Clock. International scientists analyze the human impact on the planet and calculate how long we have left before the damage we have done is irreparable and triggers the death of life as we know it.
These are all things we intuitively know are wrong, but feel so powerless and anesthetized to do anything about.

Can you elaborate? Because Trumpers think that the world is going to hell or ending because of "the libs", and they usually point to a bunch of shit that isn't actually happening or isn't a big deal as "the death of our country".
If you're talking about climate change, corruption at the highest levels, AI, etc, then yes. I agree. 800k+ people have died in the US alone from something that could be avoided if people just did their part. And that's what will end up being our downfall. The fact that we know what's coming and that we need to do something, but we lie to ourselves and others so we can justify doing nothing.

Capitalism is inherently unstable. The infinite growth upon which it is based is simply physically impossible on a limited planet. it is inconceivable that the ruling class will ever voluntarily abandon that system, and so they respond the only way they can; by desperately attempting to bail water out of the sinking ship. Throwing massive quantities of money at businesses hurt by the pandemic while refusing to give the working class more than a pittance, refusing to consider lockdowns early on in the pandemic when they might have helped, calling "essential workers" heroes while knowingly feeding them into the grist mill, and flat out spreading propaganda that the disease wasn't real and wasn't dangerous; that's how capitalism responds to a crisis. And look what it accomplished! 800k dead so far, poverty and homelessness exploding, multiple critical industries teetering on the edge of total system collapse and propaganda which predictably mutated well beyond homicidal pro-work denialism and into a full on fascist death cult. Even health officials have mostly given up trying to do anything about the pandemic itself; all efforts are now are focused on forcing workers back to their jobs and propping up the profits of private industry. We've got airline CEO's dictating CDC policy for fuck sake.
We moved much too quickly towards blaming the unvaccinated for spreading the disease, and away from remembering the decisions to turn retirement homes into charnel houses, or force "essential workers" into a meat grinder for minimum wage, or to cut off direct payments to force people back to work. Yes, people who still refuse to take basic precautions are definitely responsible for a non-zero percentage of those 800k deaths, but never forget that the decisions which caused most of them weren't made by your shitty racist uncle. They were made by people who got vaccines before anyone else had a chance to while publicly spreading anti-vax propaganda, who profited while hundreds of thousands of working class people died, and who will always use their grip on the levers of power to further their own class interests. These are the same people who fight unionization tooth and nail, who doomed us to climate catastrophe and continue to block any action to prevent it, who broke the healthcare system long before the pandemic started, and who pay millions to keep it broken. Never forget that the precarious nightmare of our lives isn't some malfunction or accident; it's the system working exactly as intended.
And never forget that these people have addresses and names.

To me that funny feeling is just that feeling you get when things arent quite right ya know. The existential dread you can feel when things are off. All the things he's listing throughout the song aren't quite right or just don't make sense. "A stunning 8k resolution meditation app" for example just doesn't feel right considering you would usually have your eyes closed cutting off your senses to relax and focus and the app being 8k resolution is almost counterproductive.

I had this exact thing during the worst of the pandemic because I was seeing the same things day after day after day as I was doing online schooling. All I saw were the walls of my room. I was very bored with life as a person that had just graduated to a different school. I felt out of place and was very depressed because I wanted to “wake up”, yet couldn’t. It felt like I was dreaming and living in a haze. I spent a week or two in a state of hazy and depressive sadness. I didn’t even know what was happening. I woke up one day and wanted to ”despawn”. It was scary because that week, I just wanted to fall asleep and not wake up. My mom took me on walks to try and help and I was finally able to smile and snap out of it when I spent a day enjoying the day outside and running around in circles at the park, finally smiling again. It was such a refreshing and reassuring moment. I know that it is different for everyone, but my advice to maybe try out is to step outside of your day to day schedule and do something bizarre and unordinary for you to do on a normal day. Do something new and I hope it gets better

"Total disassociation, fully out your mind

"That funny feeling" = derealization, where you feel detached from your surroundings and even yourself. Nothing feels real even though you know it is.

In the comics, depending on which ones you are reading I guess but definitely with sad clown Deadpool he's not just self aware he's harmfully self aware, being aware that his world isn't real canonically makes him insane, or at least leads others to see him as insane in many situations

Listening to it again now over a year later, I have a new positive interpretation of this song. It's not just about content. It's about the ridiculousness of this world. That funny feeling is how we get manipulated into caring too much about things we cannot really help with.

You can find a historical record of someone, from every era in humanity, believing its the end. And they were WRONG. Trillions of souls, believing, knowing in their heart, that the world was ending, and every single one of them was wrong. I think we're wrong. This part of the special, to me, is Bo walking us down to the very bottom of it all - the feeling of apathy in the face of horror. You have to go all the way to the bottom before you can start to come back up again (which is what happens in the next song, all eyes on me)

My favorite example of this in the Inside special is when, after the "Turning 30" song, he reassures us that he's not going to kill himself... but while he's saying it he shows himself just scrolling his phone, because he knows we all just gloss over when people say earnest thing like "hey, don't kill yourself."

This entire special was heavy, but it was perfectly mixed in with tasteful and perfectly timed humour and really good songs to make such heavy things that we need to hear digestible. And, even with its existentialism, it's almost.. soothing to hear someone else put into words your own anxieties and depression and... Well existentialism lol. Bo is so talented

To me it’s not a follow up to Welcome to the Internet or about apathy. Here he’s talking about that feeling we get sometimes, you’ll be having a good day, good weeks, heck maybe a good month or year. Then that feeling creeps back randomly, sometimes for no reason, sometimes triggered by darkness you see around you. It’s that feeling you get when you get existential. That feeling that puts weight in your chest, it’s worry, dread, a sense of emptiness. Its so much more, and it hits hard.

The juxtaposition of the content of the song and the melody gets me every time. Bo singing calmly to us about the end of the world as the world is ending.
I love your breakdown. It makes so much sense. It feels like the lion’s share of info we are bombarded with is cynical and negative to the point that it feels like I’m being disingenuous when I’m happy.
It’s kind of funny because I saw almost the exact thing you did a couple days ago as I was driving home from work. A man had fallen with his bike and a woman who was smaller than him and loaded with a huge purse and a shopping bag ran over to him. He was tangled in the bike and looked upset, but her presence and assistance seemed to calm him. It was a moment that reminded me that, at our core, we’re not cynical; we just live in a society that conditions us to be.

I feel like that apathy is a survival mechanism. If you try to really care, it gets so overwhelming because it's daily, it's non-stop, and there are so many things that are so out of your control. When you care a lot, it's just going to start burning you out😔

One of the less seemingly heavy lines in the song was "reading pornhub's terms of service, going for a drive, and obeying all the traffic laws in grand theft auto V" That last bit hit me, because GTAV is meant to be kind of a power fantasy game where you can go do anything you want, but i used to do that a lot for some reason. Stop at all the stops, I used to think it was just boredom. But after hearing this song it made me realize that the world is crazy and overwhelming enough so that my fantasy is just to feel some semblence normality.

As another person said, I appreciate the more insightful interpretation you offer as a therapist. I’m sure a lot of therapists and psychologists have had this experience, but when I mention that I am a psychologist people have often asked me if I was “analyzing” them. As if in my college psychology courses they ingrained a need to analyze everyone constantly. And the truth is that most good therapists/psychologists have always observed others, thought about how they felt, and thought about how that influences behavior. It’s just how I think, so it doesn’t feel like “analyzing”. It’s just me.
And I have the same feelings about the world as well. The way I try to think about it when I’m more positive is that there are always and there always have been constant tragedies occurring around the world, the only way to live is to make this small bubble around us a little better. The guilt and deep sorrow that comes with thinking about everything horrible doesn’t help anyone. And I have noticed that the less connected I am with the people around me, the more overwhelmed I can get by the horrible things in the wider world that I feel I can’t do anything to change.
Thanks again for sharing your thought.

The song is mostly focused in true absurdist happenings. This is why he mentions derealization because each of what he says in the verses is the antithesis to previous mentions. 8k resolution meditation app, what good does 8k do you, youre supposed to be meditating not looking at a screen. Gift shop at the gun range a MS-ING at the mall. You s---where you eat and eat where you s--- type of scenario. A book on getting better hand delivered by a drone, when all you need is human contact and care. These deal so much in absurdity that it starts to detach you from what's real. The true derealization. Noticing something is so absurd it just can't be real.

It’s almost like the “funny feeling” is just knowing something is not right and missing. Like the song is hollow and you don’t know what’s missing but it’s there. Idk if that makes sense but that’s how I feel. Whenever I hear this song I feel empty and confused but also kinda at home.

"that funny feeling" is passive suicidal ideation in the face of a slow apocalypse that everyone who can help seems perfectly willing to ignore or at best pay lip service to, the band playing on while we all watch the planet burn in 8k, knowing in the back of our minds that no matter how much we do to help, the rot in our systems is so deep and intractable that it will all be for naught. The smokestacks will continue poisoning the sky until its too late.

To me he is singing about all the swirling thoughts of gloom and doom and frightening thoughts going through his head before a panic attack.
He watches UA-cam and content to make him feel like he belongs to the real world, but they're just a distraction from his scary thoughts for a little while.
That "Funny Feeling" is when it spirals into a panic attack. He is basically an agoraphobic never leaving the house, not living in the regular world and watching the state of the world and things on tv, social media and youtube.
The picture of the forest behind him and campfire is showing how he lives indoors as an agoraphobic and can bring the outside world indoors as an agoraphobic with bad anxiety and panic disorder. Maybe I am wrong, but as someone with Panic Disorder, Anxiety, PTSD and Agoraphobia I can see this in his song.

I liked your take on the things he's listing being what's flooding in digitally. He's basically reading the news feed to us.
And while he does that things get more and more awkward, iffy, paradox or just wrong. I feel there is this climax in every verse from the mundane to that thing that makes you realise things are bad. And that's where he says "there it is again", as if he expected it to come at some point. 'Hello darkness my old friend' in a sense. Because that last thing on the list tipped the scales to the uncanny. Triggering "that funny feeling".
I also like your take on this being the feeling that we should feel something when we don't. I would differ from that and just think it's the feeling of something being wrong, of things ending, of impending doom. Sitting in front of the newsfeed just waiting for something to awaken that anxiety again.
Maybe the funny feeling is what Germans would call "Weltschmerz".

This song is so interesting. It is very soothing and chill like you said and yet it is talking about the digital information apocalypse we're currently experiencing with how the internet has evolved, and how it is affecting people and society.
Every single day we're inundated with endless amounts of information to distract, outrage, entertain and terrify to the point that we are becoming numb. To both ends of the spectrum. I don't think that we're able to be as saddened by sad things or joyful over joyous things as we've been in the past. Why? Because there is simply too much of everything. Too much entertainment and too much news about horrific things that have happened in the world, to the point where you kind of shut down mentally because you can't deal with it all.
The line that goes "Total disassociation, fully out your mind. Googling de-realization and hating what you find." is pretty cool too. I've experienced some light disassociation myself I think. There have been times when I've been feeling like I'm a spectator to my own life and upon seeing a mirror it jolted me back to feeling like me. It goes little something like this:

    - "Oh yeah. That's [Name]. That's me."
It's a very disconcerting feeling and frankly, I'm not entirely sure where it comes from. I'm pretty damn good at escapism and submerging myself in fantasy of one kind or another so perhaps that is why.
    Anyway,
    great reaction as always ;)

That Funny Feeling accurately describes a particular mix of things. A lot of it is climate greif, but it's also part something called Capitalist Realism.
Capitalist Realism is not being able to see a better world, not being able to see past the existence of capitalism. That Funny Feeling is realizing that we are hurtling towards several catastrophies at once. The rise of fascism, the climate crisis, and intense exploitation. Capitalist Realism is knowing capitalism is the cause of these things, but not being able to imagine a better system.
Seeing the end of the world, before you see the end of capitalism.

I loved your interpretation of the song. And i agree we want to care but when we open the door we are overwhelmed so we close it again and stay inside.
I think you are going to love Goodbye, the last song from Inside. I recommend just listening to it and give your full thoughts afterwards, because it had a real great flow and progression meaning-wise. Although i understand that you have to pause from time to time in a reaction video. I cant wait to see your reaction to that one!! Have a good day today.

I've seen in the comments of one of the reactions on this song, "You either know what that funny feeling is, or you're doing ok mentally."
I'm in the former, diagnosed with GAD and MDD due to my epilepsy. This song makes tears well up a little bit.

“Their life is a big habit”
Dave Matthews was singing about that in Ants Marching, and that was like 1994. He didn’t know the half of it!

Your therapist friend here again :) Are you familiar with the concept of "hypernormalization"? There's an awesome tik tok that describes it (I'll try to track down the link). I've found it super helpful for many of my clients, and myself. It's really hard to be a human in this world, especially a human who cares, which Bo is so great at highlighting. As always, you're amazing! I wish we could have coffee and talk about all the therapy things

What I've learned on my psychological journey, both through study of my own and other's experiences and my mental health journey itself, is that there's too much. I can care about what is here, I dont have the energy to care about over there, so to say.
It's why I don't watch local news. If I can connect on a deeper level with what happened, often tragic, then that's what happens. I connect. And it hurts.
There's too much and it's all available in our 24hr news cycle. You can't care on a personal level about it all or you'll collapse into yourself. But you know you should.

the power of art is that we can all see the same thing and take away from it a different interpretation, and then we can talk about them.

great reaction. Im amazed at how many don't get it until the song is over. That funny feeling that although all of these silly things are happening once in a while something happens that makes you face it.

I've listened to this song a hundred times (exaggeration alert).
I never caught the line "a whole world at your fingertips, the ocean at your door" until now.
