  • The dirt has barely settled on the 2023-24 season for the Cleveland Cavaliers after they lost to Boston in Game 5 Wednesday night, but that means it's now time to talk about the future of Donovan Mitchell. The Cavs star has the opportunity to sign an extension worth A LOT of money to stay where he is for a while, but at the same time, there have been persistent rumors that Mitchell wants out.
And if he does, many teams are ready to jump on the opportunity. One, of course, is the Lakers.
Reports indicate the Lakers have their offer ready to go, should Mitchell become available. It would like have to be, basically, everything. Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, all the picks and pick swaps the Lakers can muster. Cleveland should ask for Jalen Hood-Schifino, Max Christie (rules for RFAs notwithstanding) and everything else not nailed to the floor.
Should the Lakers jump at the chance? Would they be better with Trae Young? Giving up much less for Dejounte Murray? Trying use assets to upgrade the depth?
They only get one swing at this, if they go for a star. Is Mitchell the right one?
More reports indicating that JJ Redick is at the front of the line for the Lakers in the coaching search, this one from Marc Stein. It might be his job to lose? But would the perception that he's too much a LeBron hire keep the Lakers from pulling the trigger? It kept them away from Ty Lue...
    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: The Lakers are ready to make an offer for Donovan Mitchell.
SEGMENT 2: Is Mitchell the best way to go?
SEGMENT 3: Why would the Lakers back away from Redick?

What are you going to do for depth if you trade for Donovan Mitchell? You'll have the 3 stars and a bunch of one year minimums. We'll be like Phoenix was this year, top heavy with no depth. It's a money making move by the front office. Sell a lot of tickets and make a lot of headlines and who cares about the results.

Donovan Mitchell is certainly an upgrade in the guard position. D'lo and Austin Reaves aren't built to go far in the playoffs. We saw this last season in the playoffs they were inconsistent and there were times they played well but in championship games, you have to be consistent. This season in the playoffs they competed against a championship opponent and we again saw how inconsistent they were as D'lo had a 0 point game which is really unbelievable for a player of his caliber and Austin Reaves struggled first few games. Rui Hachamura also struggled throughout the series offensively missing alot of point blank layups and defensively couldn't guard anyone and does not know how to box out to get rebounds. I would go in and get Donovan Mitchell as he had a stellar playoff run averaging 29.0ppg in 10 games and is #6 all time in playoffs scoring at 28.6ppg. He is proven scorer in the playoffs, but the Lakers still need a starting big preferably 7 footer. Having a 7 footer won't stop Jokic though as we are seeing how Jokic is destroying DPOY Rudy Gobert in the 2nd round playoffs.

Yes, Donovan Mitchell is the type of player you go all-in for. Love Reaves and I'm a fan of Rui but at this point in Bron's twilight years you have to go for the more experienced and established star right now IF he's available. Mitchell's style of play also isn't that of Trae Young or Westbrook but rather closer to Kyrie. He's a lanky, athletic and efficient/prolific scorer and isn't nearly as bad on defense as Trae or D'Lo. Even if we can put out a competitive trade offer, the question is whether or not Donovan will pressure Dan Gilbert/Cleveland to trade him to LA.

Bron is retiring in 2 years. You get Mitchell at all costs, not just for now, but the future this is obvious. Bron is the key to everything, because of his contract. If he wants to go out competing, then he will likely take some form of a paycut so the Lakers can sign talent this offseason and you can bet your house on that (Just like in Miami, Bron sacrificed money to win).
You put Vando in the starting lineup to guard MPJ that’s easy, he was just hurt. Add 1 more 3&D guy to starting unit. You put Reaves on the bench or trade him.
There, this team beats Denver. Lol Jokic not beating a Big 3 of LBJ AD & Mitchell no way..

These conversations are all moot. We have nothing to trade that any team wants. 2024 is one of the worst drafts in history, nobody is going to give anything of value for the 17th pick in the draft. Reeves is our most attractive asset and nobody is going to give up a star for him. Unless we are willing to trade AD, we literally have nothing of value any team wants.

Lakers will likely have three 1st round picks they can trade on draft day, not just this years pick but two more that will definitely be used after LeBron retires so they could potentially be lottery picks. Obviously Reaves will have to go but I would try to package Vincent/Wood/ Redish instead of sending Ryu but obviously those future picks and Reaves are the most coveted.

If that's the case, bad plan, because LeBron's likely done by the time that dust settles, so Pelinka will be left holding the bag. Plus, as we've discussed on many previous shows, if a GM makes a move that he knows is a bad idea, but he does it anyway because he doesn't have the stones to tell a superstar no (or lobby the owner to get his back), that's even worse than simply making a mistake. But bottom line, unless Jeanie will simply never fire Pelinka (in which case, nothing matters, so "insert emoji shrug"), if a Redick hire goes sideways fast, it lands on him, not LeBron. Appreciate you watching. AK
