I found that a mix of roughly 60% game and 40% music was good enough to hear the music and knowing when to shift. I also lowered all volumes in-game safe for the car sound
If you go to the event lab search "Late night drive" and there should be a couple with and without rain, you can also change weather when you make your own events :)

The only annoying thing is that when you play manual, no speedometer means you have to rely on sounds, so no music for manual players w/o hud.
