Sonic can only turn dark shadow or dark sonic when someone hurts his friends and also. He doesn’t attack anyone when they didn’t hurt his friends
So whats the point he almost killed tails and he turned dark so

Last I checked sonic doesn't need the emeralds to go into the dark form as it is fuelled by his negative emotions not chaos rings
