In this episode of #thedailydoug, I'm remembering and showing public support for the people of Ukraine, as we mark the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion. In doing so, I'm listening to Stefania, a song by Kalush Orchestra of Ukraine. The song won the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest, and the official video has been viewed more that 50 million times. The song is unique, as it blends elements of hip-hop and rap with traditional Ukrainian folk sounds...even making use of traditional Ukrainian wooden flutes. I hope you'll join me in lifting up this song and voicing support for peace not only in Ukraine but around the world.

The song was written for the performer's mother's anniversary as a gift, but because of the war, it acquired a completely different meaning. More than 50,000 women serve in the Armed Forces. The clip is about three women: the first gives her child to her parents and goes to war, the second warrior woman gives the girl to her mother, and the third to God, because the girl died, but she also died in the war and joined her daughter in heaven.

For some reason this song sounds like a song of yearning (almost like a prayer), nostalgic and playful at the same time. Quite fitting for a song that talks about a mother’s eternal love and bond with her child through life and death.
Thank you Doug for your support and attention! It’s so important for us Ukrainians that people around the world give us their help and support. A year ago I was driving my family from Irpin to a safer place, and was not aware than the name of my town could become famous and known across the ocean. It’s sad, that this fame was caused by such rough circumstances.

I guess it's worth mentioning that "Stefania" would have been a worthy winner even without that f*cking war. It's a simple chord progression, but not overused, and the chorus stucks in your head immediately. Add the lyrics, and you end up with what Doug has already stated: Art. 💛💙

Ah, it's like each month in 2022 as a Ukrainian was like a year. That song feels like so long ago, still a great song. Brings nostalgia in a way, disregarding the bad stuff, but bringing the best of what Ukrainians were capable to do that year. Thanks Doug

Every single time I watch this clip I cry like a child. I'm not a child, I'm not a mother but I'm sensitive for humans' pain. I can't understand why people hurt one another like this... Can't we just live in piece?

If you dive deeper in Ukrainian pop music the most successful songs are only with some folk tips. For example Wild dance of Ruslana or GoA band and Kalush orchestra is not an exception. It would be nice if you will make video with some song of GoA.

You should check out Go_A! They were the Ukrainian Eurovision representative in 2021 and came second in the popular vote, one of the members is also in Kalush Orchestra, and they do a similar thing combining folk and contemporary (electronica, in their case). Their singer, Kateryna, does this fascinating technique called White Voice. The song they did for ESC, Shum, has two versions, a version they did for the show (with the video filmed in Chornobyl! The live performance is also INCREDIBLE) and an older, slightly longer version. Any of those three videos would be great to react to.

Kalush is the hometown of the band's frontman Oleg Psyuk - well, the one in the pink panama. The group is named after this city. Stefaniа is his mother.
The history of Ukraine originates from an ancient state with its capital in Kyiv - "RUS'" (not to be confused with "Russia", these are different things). "Rus'" had the same coat of arms as today's Ukraine - "trident".
"Rus" existed before the Mongol-Tatar invasion (Golden Horde). Further, "Rus'" under the name "Principality of Rus" is included in the federation under the name "Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Duchy Rus' and Zhymoytske". THIS was a direct competitor of the "Moscow Empire" at that time in that area of Europe. The Muscovite prince always wanted to conquer Kyiv, as the capital of ancient "Russia", in order to get his "lineage" from Kyiv.
Later, when this federation disintegrated, the ancestors of Ukrainians formed states called "Hetmanship" and "Zaporizhsky Army".
Then, from the 17th century, Ukrainians became enslaved and divided between Poland and the Russian Empire. Ukrainians live under occupation. When the "Russian Empire" was destroyed, Ukrainians formed their own national state "Ukrainian People's Republic" in 1918, which was destroyed by Bolshevik "Russia" in 1922 with terror and blood.
Next, the Ukrainians were forced into the Soviet Union against their will. Throughout the time of the Soviet Union, most of the republics and peoples that were part of the Soviet Union were there against their will. The Russian Bolsheviks in 1918-1922 killed many Ukrainians in order to seize Kyiv and impose communist rule.
History of Ukraine and Russia, briefly.
Ukraine has its origins in the ancient state "Rus", the capital of which - Kyiv, was already known in 430 AD.
The history of "Russia" originates from the "Principality of Moscow", which was formed around 1200-1300. One of the sons of the Prince of Kyiv, whose mother was a Mongol-Tatar, sat on the throne. In the 15th century, it was renamed "Moscow Kingdom".
The population of the "Moscow Kingdom" is local NOT Slavic, but Finno-Ugric tribes: Merya, Moksha, Meshera, Vesya, Erzyany.
The population of "Rus" (ancestors of Ukrainians) are Slavic tribes: what modern scientists call - "glades", "Drevlians", "Northerners", "Volhynians" (all of them called themselves "Rusyns").
That is, there was ONE indigenous people on the territory of "Russia". And now on the territory of Ukraine there is ONE people, "Rusyns" (Ukrainians), and the second indigenous people, the Crimean Tatars in Crimea.
"Russians" are a mixture of 190 indigenous peoples who were conquered by Moscow, with blood and terror. For several centuries, Moscow destroyed their national self-consciousness, names of peoples, native languages and cultures.
Their descendants, who today have lost their roots, do not know their origin, therefore they consider the "Soviet Union" as their homeland, because they do not know their ancestors who existed BEFORE the "Soviet Union". Therefore, they do not show a desire for their own freedom from Moscow.
From the 8th century to the 19th century, the ancestors of Ukrainians were called "Rusyns", this name was gradually lost and transformed into "Ukrainian" in the 15th-19th centuries.
Muscovite tsars always wanted to conquer Kyiv in order to appropriate the history of ancient "Rus".
It got to the point that the Tsar of the "Moscow Kingdom" Peter the Great in 1721 arbitrarily and illegally renamed the state "Moscow Kingdom" to "Russia". In this way, he STOLE the name of the ancient state of the Ukrainians and put this name on top of the name of the "Moscow Kingdom". This is the main conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Russians, who are descendants of 190 non-Slavic peoples, are somehow taught by Russian propaganda that their history originates from Kyiv and "Rus".
But Kyiv was founded in the 430s of our era.
Moscow was founded in approximately 1200-1300.
Russians are an assimilated mixture of 190 indigenous local peoples. The Russians were formed by the mixing and assimilation and Russification of these 190 indigenous peoples of the "Russian Empire". Until the 17th and 18th centuries, these peoples had their own native names, native languages, cultures, and even religions. The empire was formed by seizing from the 15th century to the 18th century the territory east of Moscow. This is a seizure of the power and blood of the territory of indigenous peoples. Moscow destroyed the national self-consciousness and language of dozens of its indigenous peoples, turned them into an inert mass that should not have national aspirations for their own freedom.
So that there is no rebellion of the population due to the desire to get freedom. Today, Russians are stealing the history of Ukrainians, and Russian propaganda does not teach Russians their history, because the history of Russians is the history of Moscow's murders and terror against their ancestors, where Moscow troops burned entire settlements along with children and women. National heroes were brutally killed.
