Nice man! Thinking about spending a little more time with 80-20 in the future just to give them a good try. It will take a while haha. Have a bulk pack of Martin PB to get through first. Really like the Martin Pb strings these days, and my wife found a really good price for a 25 set pack for Christmas last year. Never spent much time with 80-20 though, and maybe on a mahogany guitar it would be interesting to play for a while. Used to play Elixir before 2020, but not gigging as much for a while during the pandemic made me think about how much I was spending on strings. For this reason I have been getting used to regular non treated strings again, even though I am back to gigging more now. I am lucky and am able to get some good time out of them. Love your playing and demos as always dude!

Well Shawn, on that Edmonds Brock Signature guitar in your hands, it's hard for me to differentiate "significantly" between those two strings. I'd say there is so little difference that I probably wouldn't pay the upcharge for PB's. Now, given a break-in and time, that tone may change. Always good listening to your videos. I want to like the 80/20's the highs, and high mids, sound great. But overall, especially for fast tunes and diggin' in lows and low mids...I have to go with clarity and dynamic range - the PB's. But I love the overtone increase of the darker warmer strings for ballads etc...
BTW: After 50 plus years of daily acoustic playing I also dislike string changes. The occasional pokes hurt. Knowing I didn't do my whole fretboard and fret dress (which takes me an hour) can make me disappointed. Love your channel!

I am the same way man. It seems like with Elixir, I had some favoritism toward the 80/20, but with D’Addario, I can’t live with these. I thought they might need to break in, or the guitar might need to adjust, but I actually recorded the video on Thursday, and they sound today as they did when I put them on. That is a positive thing for those who like them the best of course, but I’d hoped the E and A would have become a little more lively, and that simply has not been the case.

I’ve always thought that Phosphor Bronze had added harmonics that 80/20 do not.
I’ve felt that if you want to hear your guitar as it really sounds, use 80/20’s. If you want an enhanced sound with thick harmonics and overtones, use PB.
I use 80/20’s. BUT, I’m gaining a liking to PB lately.

Hi James, for many years I strongly preferred 80/20, and had High expectations of these when they came out. The first said I tried, I didn’t think much of, but the second set really did it for me; now to be honest, I like these better than the PBs. Sadly now, I have about 20 sets of the phosphor bronze to work through before I return lol. Nevertheless, I think in the long run, the 80/20 has a cleaner overtone about it. Somehow it is just a little more direct I guess, and a little brighter as you said. In my limited experience with a couple of sets, they are not quite as loud, but I really do like them, and this is such a spectacular guitar, that I have more volume than I would ever need anyhow.

If you like lush, that’s your string.

@@ShawnBrockMusic cool. I'm going to grab some medium XS 80/20's and put them on one of my dreads... 😎🎸 PB's are starting to feel slightly mid-low bloated right now.

@@ramspencer5492 i’m just telling you though man, for the first few hours, don’t be surprised if you hate them. I don’t know what it is, but you may want to get a butcher knife and kill me, but I promise you if you experiment for a few days, they are liable to grow on you. 😂

@ShawnBrockMusic you inspired me to do a quick comparison on my Brazilian Bourgeois. I will say this guitar is an absolute beast with the Bourgeois aged top/braces, large sound hole, and banjo killer bracing. So far i like the 80/20s a bit better…they are slightly quieter which i would expect as they are almost 10lbs lighter in tension. Anyhow…..one more example for everyone to enjoy and complain about coated strings :)

Brother I sure appreciate you sending that to me, because it is very valuable for me to hear the results that someone else gets. That is an awesome video, and I hope everyone here will check it out. Fabulous sounding guitar by the way! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this, and I agree with you about the 80/20 on your bourgeois.

The 80/20s are not quite as bright, imho. I prefer the 80/20’s. Thanks Shawn.

As lovable as he always was, Gomer definitely was a gomb. Nothing beats the episode of citizens arrest, or Gomer Pyle USMC episode aqua marines. 😂

I’m right there with you; I thought these might liven up a little more, but they have held steady.
