Final Fantasy XI hails from a different era of gaming, where mmos were an even larger time investment than they are now. A huge part of that was the immense amount of travel that could take place in Vana'diel....but is that a better formula than instant warps and teleports?

i miss taking a long time to go too places :( it always felt like an adventure, even if it meant spending an entire day completing just a single quest. It felt like a journey. i always say to my friends. The journey begins the moment you exit character creation. it shouldn't have to need start the moment you hit max level. it's about the journey/adventure and experience you make for yourself, that's why to me FF11 will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart. To my first time going from windurst as a low level warrior to my first leveling party. to going through bastok to go to the tunnels to go to the dessert to finally reaching Sea and Sky. memories embeded into my heart that will always last me forever. now a days in FF14 i get to a new zone and i could careless but FF11 zones always held a sense of wonder and a chilling fear of the unknown to me which i loved.

Outpost warps were added in an event for Christmas 2003 (just prior to when I started playing originally) - the "Twinkling Treants" needed to all be defeated on all servers before the event would end and actually unlock the outpost warp system.

Honestly, the later additions of survival guides, and then non-city homepoints (particularly in really odd locations) definitely made the world a bit smaller, but there were just so many zones by the late 2000's that the game did need it. That said, it was never particularly bad travelling around Vana'diel for most things - the random durations of sneak & invisible were *far* more frustrating than the actual ways of getting around. I think the game was designed for it to take a while getting somewhere, to make it always seem it was like part of your journey for exp (or treasure, or whatever else you were off to do).

  • @krum1985
    @krum1985 2 роки тому +12

I think I like the *idea* of having "getting there" being part of the challenge, but in practice, fast-travel has become so ubiquitous that a modern game without it just seems wrong. I do love how FFXI made me spend more time chatting with people while waiting for ferries & airships though, I made some friends that way =)

I remember when "warping out" wasn't a thing, unless you were playing BLM, or were in an EXP party with someone with D2, obviously. Yes warp scrolls existed, yes warp cudgels became a thing once you eventually had the financial means to have one on you at all times... but before that, there was a time when you didn't just "warp back home" when adventuring out into the wild. Oh it took you 30 minutes to work your way deep into a dungeon or dangerous area for a quest? Welp, now get ready for the journey home.
Yes, you had to run your way all the way back to town. Back out of the dungeon. Back across the fields and large open areas, dodging the high-level mobs along the way. And finally getting back to town, really making it feel like you "went out on a journey" every time you left a major city. Finally making it back to town after a long journey, just to finish one mission or quest or general task, really felt like an accomplishment - seeing the glorious gates of your home town or Jeuno come into view after a long run, really felt like you were being welcomed home after being away.
This wasn't ALWAYS the case of course, but it definitely was in the early game when you were a lower level and you didn't have a consistent source of income yet. Never did the game feel as large and adventurous as it did during that period. It was brutal, but man did it generate some great memories.

    • @Krucifus
      @Krucifus 2 роки тому +1

Warp Cudgels were added with CoP expansion, as they required animas which took memories from Empty zones. I do agree with most everything you said, but Warp Cudgels weren't a widespread thing until late 2005/early 2006 timeframe.

I do think that there has to be some happy middle ground between this old school method of traveling taking a long time and having accessibility to warps etc. New World is doing well despite people having to run everywhere and it can take quite sometime to navigate the terrain. I just wonder how much FF11 was held back by the technology of the time. Like I wonder how they could make these systems better and quicker now with modern tech. Especially the load times between zones and the boat and airship times.

Travel was probably way to hard early game, however as your outposts grew, as you got into a shell that kinda went away. As long as you walked the zones once it became fine.
Shout teleports became a thing, eventually all the outposts got claimed. This was a costly way to play as a solo player but it was an option.
The only real issues arise when you went deep into dungeons, or really remote locations, and this was generally mitigated with preparation of RR items... That is of course assuming a true sight dragon did not spawn 😂. This was made on purpose, if you where heading to the keep, cape, or any of the other far off locations it was meant to be a risk.

Outpost warps were not there from the onset. There was a world event that was massive. Everyone was level capped and had to kill huge tree ents. The gift was supposedly for the server who complete it first. We were on Fenrir server and we finished it first with a bullet. The other lower population servers lagged so far behind that the GMs had to finish it for them. A month later we got outpost warps for everyone. Then of course was the nightmare of getting the outpost opened if your country controlled it. Long live Sandy as we owned everything including Gustaberg and Sarutabaruta.

  • @Zackreaver
    @Zackreaver 2 роки тому +1

Lengthy travel times are definitely a thing of the past at this point, primarily due to the fact that when taking into account that a players time should be valuable and should respect the free time they have in their life.
However the commodity of discovery and exploration should not be forgotten in the essence of travel. A system where you need to get there first in order to teleport there again is one thing, but another thing to consider is the activity involved in traveling there to begin with.
With Final fantasy XI classic travel, most of the traveling was just walking and waiting. It wasn't necessarily exciting, difficult, or eventful. It was just time consuming.
However with the boats between selbina/mhaura or mhaura/whitegate, players were given the option to ride these boats for fishing as well as events that take place on the boat itself. So in a sense, adding an eventful nature to these "long travel sessions" is a great way to prevent these traveling mechanics from feeling empty.
Most of time you won't see people riding an airship or a regular boat to "get around" anymore because there are faster ways to travel, but you will still see people get on the boats to fish or fight an NM that spawns specifically on them. And some areas that you travel by foot or on chocobo was mostly entirely empty and devoid of any meaninful activity you can do there.
If there was more to do in these open areas, or if there was more reason for the area to recieve traffic then the world would feel more alive, rather than the feeling of your just trying to get from point A to point B.
And while there is a debate on this specific topic, I feel like the way world of warcraft implemented flight paths with their fast travel mechanic was a good medium for travel. You made travel time consuming, but not attention consuming. If players wanted to see the sights of the landscape they could watch their character fly around on the path, but if they just wanted to get to a destination they could set their destination and forget, or come back later.
The important thing here is for the game to be respectful of the players time, and to understand that when they start up the game, there should be "something" they can do. Even if something requires some work to get to, that work should be "meaningful" in some way. It's not very meaningful when a quest or something is just "Walk to this spot" It's better if there's stuff you do along the way, or stuff you CAN do while going there.
Even the chocobo riding in final fantasy XI had chocobo digging, so even if you never needed to ride a chocobo again, there was still something you could do with chocobo's. Final Fantasy XI was definitely ahead of it's time in terms of making sure every part of the game was relevant even post progression. Although that was kind of lost with modern FFXI with most pre-99 content essentially being skipped, the original concept of the game tried really hard to make sure that the stuff you did mattered at all levels, which is more that can be said of most games.

I liked that it was so hard to travel in the classic 75 era. It makes the world feel more realistic. It also made the entire NM and HNM scene more exciting. I remember any time an HNM like Tiamat or Jormungand or Vrtra would spawn it would be a race, a mad dash to get enough people out there on the right jobs to hold it until the rest of the kill group could show up. Watching Linkshells wiping because they engaged too fast before enough people got there was the funniest thing ever in the game. Especially if you didn't like them. Then stealing the HNM, killing it and rubbing it in their face. That was the real PvP. lol XD

Travel is really hard to get perfect. I think removing it completely via fast travel/warps really sucks. It removes the feeling of a bustling world full of travelers and also removes a lot of organic situations that can happen between players.
The tedium of 75-cap travel in FFXI was probably overboard.
If I had to choose one extreme, I’d take the tedious travel over a lifeless world every time.

Does anyone remember the Xmas event that led to Outpost Warps, the Christmas Treant? It was a server wide gift for defeating this NM that everyone could attack at the same time. Once everyone realized what this gift was, traveling around was never the same.

I think outpost warps we're one of the best things to happen in the game. I think there was something to having to traverse by foot your first bit of the game. And produced allot of frustration and stress. Lol But being able to stream line your process as you went was surely appreciated.
It didn't make the world seem small to me because there was still so much going on. What ended up making it feel small to me was at 99 era and allot of zones just completely died.

I think the classic 75 era of FFXI has the right balance of convenience while still having that feeling of a vast world. It also reinforced the concept of grouping together like if you want to teleport you'll need a WHM, or warp back to your homepoint with a BLM, and soforth.

Now the world is open! Choco to most areas you need. Then sloooooly get to where you earn your keys, to get the boat to Elshimo. Then sloooowly get to where you earn your regular airboat pass. And along the way, gather as many outposts as you can. Then....after level 50, even in the Classic Servers, I could see adding some other warp points. But not till after at least one character has earned it.

This discussion is missing just how vital and important Movement Speed gear was then. Trotter boots and Heralds Gaiters was very expensive back then because of this. Getting Skadi Feet was awesome as it was kinda almost free from salvage, and the later unity Simurgh boots.

It wasn't only Kazham. Remember how long it took to get to the Boyhada Tree for a skill up party? Remember how far you had to go to get a (For me it was a) RDM testimony? I really liked the travel if only for the immersion. New World is kind of similar btw.

There is a happy middle ground to be found there:
Nowadays, it is no longer necessary to use the boats and flying boats in the game : (
This is a pity because the boats and flying boats are real in this game, physical objects that really exist and take you through the world very fast, and not just a cutscene, other players can see the flying boats in the air, and normal boats in the sea, etc.. All of this adds a lot to the experience of the game feeling like an actual living breathing world, a simulation of the world it presents.
But nowadays, after the first time you go to a place, you can always teleport there...
This takes a lot out of the game's immersion. The argument is that the original way took a long time to wait (up to 11m waiting between one boat and another, and up to 6m of actual travel time). And I understand that.
One way to fix this would be: keep some teleports, but between cities still force players to use flying boats, while also modifying the current way boats operate… putting two boats on each path at a time would be a great start, making boats available every ~4m always, something like that. And maybe make the boats a little faster, shortening the travel time by ~1m to less than the current one.
The last thing would be to actually create new connections, having every city connect with each other directly.
The above changes would keep all the original immersion, but without the long waiting times of the original.
Teleporter usage could be limited to a maximum range that increases with the player level but never allowing teletransportation from capital city to capital city.
Another good example are chocobos and teleportation books.
In the classic teleportation books didn't exist, but sometimes they are a very welcome help, the problem is when they are abused.
I would love to see many books removed, however I believe the game should keep the books inside dungeons and dangerous hard to reach regions.
Acquiring a chocobo license and hiring chocobos was an essential part of the original game. But the classic form is a little too much work as when you dismount a chocobo, it's gone and you can't call it again.
The ideal middle ground, in my view, would enable you to call the hired chocobo again after dismounting it if you have time left. Maybe make it so that every time you call the chocobo again, ~3~5m of the chocobo's current available timer is removed, but you can call it again as many times as you like within ~2 ~3h after hiring one or until the usage timer is fully depleted (30m).
With this modification, it would no longer be necessary for people to have personal mounts (those could be available at level 75+, something like that, instead of having them at level ~20 as it is today). One way to bypass it would still be to raise your own chocobo the classic way, of course.

After recovering from that chair enveloping moment I struck up a conversation with this person and we started playing together and we've been married ever since that's what I miss about the old games the travel the Random Encounters the unlooked for events I played Final Fantasy 14 for the last 6 years I truly enjoy the game it is what I always wanted 11 to become except for that quick travel so about 6 months ago I started using my chocobo to travel everywhere unless I absolutely had to use Warp and the level of interaction I've had with so many more people brought back that old feeling that I had for Final Fantasy 11 sometimes it's not the game mechanics but how we use them

I feel some sort of middle ground would be best. The problem with 14 is too much is instanced. I have never had any sense for how big the world is and i could not tell you where a single dungeon in the world is actually located. I miss gathering everyone and setting out together and trying to avoid the dangers of the world. But on the other hand 11 does take it to the extreme and i just don't feel as up to it as i used to.

FFXI travel in classic was better. It could use a lil help like more transportation options and even speed up time on ships/boats a little bit. Regardless FFXI classic is better than today's standards. Today it sucks, the game just doesn't feel adventurous at all.

zones were ment to have adventures. travel and danger is in important to the experience. even at lv cap most of the game can kill you. you are always "playing" and nothing really becomes obsolete.

The travel challenge in classic FFXI is just another example of the game's design philosophy in action. Just like exp parties and crafting. The game's scope, world building, and challenge comes first, above all else. Little to no respect for the player's time.

Have your sins been forgiven today and forever? Think about this. The God of the bible, the One True God made us to worship him, obey him, and enjoy him forever. We break His laws daily by not putting Him first, not thanking Him like we should, we lie, we lust, we have sex before marriage, we dishonor our parents, we covet things other people have, we take God's name and use it in vain, we use it in a low manner, sometimes as a cuss word, (God is holy and even His name is holy), we don't love like we should, etc. In doing so we're saying He's not a good provider, He's a liar, He's untrustworthy, He's not worthy of praise. All these things and more are counted against us. The bible says God is the just judge of the world and one day He will settle the score for all the wrong we've done. God is holy meaning He is righteous (morally perfect in thought, word, and deed) It also means He is set apart and higher than us. God being good, must punish all sin or wrong doing in the world. This means that if you sin one time God will cast you in hell for eternity. Because He is good and He doesn't turn a blind eye to sin. But there is good news. 2000 years ago Jesus the Son of God came into this world and lived a perfect life ( He never sinned once) and He died on the cross taking the wrath that we deserve and paid the penalty for the sins we committed. The bible says that if you will repent (confess and forsake your sins) and trust in what Christ did on the cross (He took the wrath of God that was meant for you and I) then all your sins will be forgiven and when you die you will be in heaven with God and all who believe for eternity. Jesus died and on the third day He rose from the grave. Get right with God today don't wait. Once you die after that comes the judgement. Hebrews 9:27 It's the most important thing you can do. You must be born again John 3:7 If you repent and trust in what Christ did on the cross it shows that you've been born again or born spiritually. Right now you're dead in your sins and you can't see the beauty of Jesus Christ but after you trust in Christ all the things you hate about God like obeying him, serving Him, loving Him and others, reading the bible, praying and going to church you will love to do those things because God changes your heart. That's how you know you have been born again and forgiven. Please think long about this and ask me any questions you have as this is the most important thing you can ever think of in your life. An eternity in hell (darkness and a lake of fire the bible describes it, with weeping and gnashing of teeth) or an eternity out of that place and into the loving arms of God who is infinitely glorious, has infinite knowledge and has infinite power to do all that He pleases. You decide. Have a great day!

FFXI Was such a good game, and the travel in the game was one of the major parts of it. In the new days of it, if you wanted a party, you'd sit in the zone, or near the zone with your flag up. Partying up in the dunes? I remember sitting at the entrance of the dunes/selbina waiting for hours with others trying to get a party. Same with Qufim, and Kazham. Was such a pain getting from area to area early on.
I remember people selling teleports 2k-5k at times, just to get a little bit closer. This was all before OP warps. You could get a chocobo from Jeuno, or one of the main nations, and travel for 10-20 minutes, or get a teleport, then grab a chocobo at the telepoint.
When OP warps came out, it made travel easier, and it still felt like the game was just huge. Then home point warps were added in. The game didn't feel as big, and it made it easier to level up, and continue, and death wasn't as bad, because you could just warp to a homepoint or outpost that was close to that area.
FFXI was fantastic to travel in, but if you needed to go from one area to another quickly, it did suck, but it made the game feel like it was actually bigger than it was.
