Enjoying seeing Ruth’s episode. I like her honesty. The wife is so unrealistic. She’s overspending and driving the business into failure. All she does is laugh about her overspending. She needs a real wake up call.
exactly. I've stayed in a lot of expensive hotels and none of them had such expensive bathrooms. I would rather she spent half as much on each and spent some on the rest of the areas that the guests have to spend time in.
Don't patronise older people. I'm a pensioner and have never played bingo in my life. I have no intention of ever doing so.
You're the one being patronising! Nothing wrong with Bingo at any age! Your loss if you don't play!
The whole coach-trip-bingo-cheap hotel, turkey and tinsel trips fill me with horror. I’m a pensioner.
They need to focus on the common areas if they want a higher end clientele. Nobody wants to walk through a ruin to get to their luxury room
Jimmy Little, that struck me too. They spent all that money on the bedrooms, which were gorgeous, but the common areas were so ugly and stuck in the 60s. It doesn't make sense.
@@keepitsimple4629 I think what it is is that Heidi loves to craft magnificent bedrooms and bathrooms. She doesn’t do it with the thought in mind of being able to charge more, she just loves doing it, and her decoration enthusiasm doesn’t extend to other types of rooms.
Poor Ruth - she's actually dazzled by and grateful for the fact that her bathroom isn't filthy, for once. 😄
Having a control freak and that same person being irresponsible with money will certainly lead to disaster.
She spent $8000.00 on one room back in 2007? I could have done it for half that price yesterday. That is ridiculous considering the results.
Ruth is so watchable
There is no way that bathroom was $2,000!! She spent at least $4,000 on the bathroom and the other $4,000 on the room. He simply did not want Ruth to know how much was spent. He has no control over the situation. The rooms and bathrooms are nice, but having good taste does not mean having an expensive taste. All of those rooms could have been decorated with pieces of high quality for much less. You just have to be willing to look for good deals, and she does not want to take the time. Or she just gets a thrill from knowing her decor is expensive....at his cost. Shameful.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane !! English born, lived in Horam and then Eastbourne. Danced on the Pier, walked the 'Front' drank espressos fond memories of the late 50s..........
I’m a pensioner and that hotel
is like being in a nightmare
Heidi doesn't come across as very personable. She's too up herself and bullies her husband.
She comes across like a spoiled child who married a "Dad".
Her husband tries to have a serious talk with her about money and she basically rolled her eyes and called it "boring".... And then after spending more money, she used the excuse that her husband didn't specifically tell her "No" yet 👀🙈
And then there was her complaining that Ruth was like a nagging mom telling her to clean up her establishment 🙄🙄🙄🙄; "Tidy this, tidy THAT 😤" - DO YOUR JOB RUTH! geez lol
Ruth must have become utterly sick from eating full English breakfasts constantly
I found Heidi's false smile creepy in the beginning because it looked like the smile of a moron but in the end she did seem to get a grasp of reality and I hope things worked out well for the couple
She seems to be quite immature and totally unsuited to the hospitality industry.
Heidi ‘s name seems to be around as the name of the owner of East Beach
they made everything so beautiful to then install the most common love hotel bath tubs
The phrase "cut bait and run" continues to roll over and over I my mind.
I think she must have been very spoilt as a child.
Perhaps; it would be very hard to say. We don't know her other life experiences; everyone is on their own journey.
Did she just say, “it’s red injun for…”? Uh… 😮
What a lovely couple and a beautiful hotel. Seniors may have that outdated image of being dull and skint but give them a chance to prove its quality and good service they prefer. The coach is just a node of transport after all. 💕
I’m surprised she didn’t focus more on the breakfast and dining area…
Yes I think it was because Ruth knew Heidi would likely continue with the coach business- which she did
how lucky are they to have a lovely hotels like that right on the sea front
Expected Ruth to recommend hiring a designer to develop a cohesive plan to implement in all rooms and common areas. Save a lot more money buying in bulk, removing headaches and knowing refurbishment costs in advance. Plus, no burying mismatched pillows under the comforters. Are the travel writer pieces still online?
@Whoiskevinjones
This would be the best, most logical recommendation, but I doubt the couple would ever agree to implement it. The wife, in particular, expressed the need to maintain control several times, so it's hard to imagine her complying with someone else's plan.
The amount of times the wife has mention the word 'control' is worrying
This is an old vid and at this period of time if you watch makeover programmes there were so many people upgrading buildings but spending far too much. I helped people upgrade buildings during this period and you could do so much for very little money yet still refurbish with quality.
I love how standards have changed, since even this episode was filmed. The refurbed room Ruth raved about would fill me with dread upon opening the door. I wouldn't be happy with that at any price above 50 quid.
Glad I wasn't the only one who felt that way. Did remind myself, though, that the hotel was supposed to be Victorian. Just not my dark, ancient cup of tea
If they are calling it East Beach, why does that room look like gothic brothel with an ugly 4-poster bed. They could have spent half the amount with a light breezy reflecting the beach. Heidi should have spent a bit more and hired a designer for an overall look.
So many people should never have there own business for a good reason I have seen this over and over I’m a successful builder and see so much 😮😳😮😃👍😉😉😉
Seems Heidi and Mark are no more and she owns East Beach. I found this interesting however: “Mark & Yvette Cowderoy, who has owned the Atlanta Guesthouse since 2008, so nearly 10 years now!” I wish them all well.
Those creaky doors would drive me nuts 🥜. Two seconds to oil them.
This woman needs a huge attitude adjustment like her hotel. She needs to get down from her dead high horse and walk. Nasty attitude and blnd to her situation. Pride kills.
love ruths green coat..suits her well❤❤
The wife does like to spend. I wish she could find a mentor for her refurbishings. Someone who could help her channel her quest for luxury and richness with the challenge of a stricter budget. Let 's start with shopping antiques. A ball foot tub soaker tub with an overhead and hand held showers is a viable option for a less expensive yet lovely experience perhaps for a lesser priced room.
Tv in bath totally unecessary, when u hv little money
I don’t understand why they decorate a beachfront hotel in that 80’s Rocco overwrought style! Why not a lighter, cleaner more natural coastal modern?
it's an old building with period architecture and not the 1980s. I think it's grand and should be preserved in it's original style.
Looks like they’ve split up . He owns Atlanta Guesthouse with his new wife
I feel bad for the coach people, to be honest.
Why? They want to spend basically nothing and don’t care if the owners of an establishment have to suffer as a result.
Fawlty Towers anybody?
I never understand why it has to be all or nothing on room refurbs Surely a new paint /wallpaper job and new bed linen / curtains for a couple of hundred quid will make such a difference - and of course cleanliness- to tide you over until full refurb can be achieved
Well, it's still operating as a hotel. It has 9.3 rating, too!
Huge jacuzzis are ridiculous. Have they costed that giant thing full of hot water into the rooms budget?
East Beach, Shingles, The Pier, Breakwater, Water's Edge.... Excalibur Cottage, Ye House, Lord House, The Cinnamons.
I have traveled quite a bit and I would rather spend less on sleeping accommodations and more on the food and local sites. If your budget is small then stay in a small hotel and spend your money on your adventures. If money is no object then stay at five star place and do a catered holiday.
It’s so expensive now, I should never afford it. It costs more than the suite I booked at the westin in my country
Currently, room prices are in the 400+ pound price range!!! I disagree about the coach class. Why not have a number of rooms for such travellers so they can afford to have a nice time. If a nice profit can be gained by these more expensive rooms and they are making a nice living, why not??
I agree. They've certainly got plenty of rooms. Ruth is really down on the coach business for some reason.
A business is not a charity and quite frankly coach tours are the bane of most hotels.
Heidi is so juvenile
He should run … being financially involved with Heidi … terrifying!
In the last episode of HI I watched filmed the same year, they were getting rid of the spa baths....but in this one she' installing them?
HE needs to get away! She will n e v e r listen! Down the road....ooh geez!
Heidi. kudos to you girl you are way ahead of the game (they are not in your league!)
She is very silly.
We all struggle with sometimes irrational behaviour and communication problems. They both seem like likeable, if perhaps mismatched, people to me. I wish them and their business well.
Possibly no one had shown Heidi an example of more economical yet tasteful room furnishing/decorum.
I can see the hotel had new id, probable new ownership. Great location, for sure.
Heidi is a child and has been taught, I suppose, when growing up a wink and a smile gets you what you want. Her husband just stands by. I don’t get it. But in the end, she may have grown up just a bit. Congrats to East Beach. I see only Heidi shows as owner now and the pictures all look fantastic.
Brenda, from Oregon. What does Weyanoke mean ? I'm American.
Weyanoke people, were historic American Indians who lived on the Weyanoke Peninsula in Virginia in the 17th century, which English colonists named after them.
Heidi seems like hard work
Beautiful location and nice hotel.. brrrrr.. Heidi is NOT my cup of tea.
Control when will people realise everything is selling a product - I am in education and have to accept offering a service and satisfying the customer
Those bathroom remodels are HORRIBLE!!😄🙃 Victorian Hotel with Star Trek TACKY bathrooms..."OWCH".
Amazingly Heidi laughs at being over a million pounds in debt, clueless
I think that’s how she deals when uncomfortable? Lots of people joke and smile when things are brought to their attention that makes them uncomfortable. My opinion anyway.
That wife is all about being in control- she’s a complete control freak. Let’s see if her eyes glaze over when the banks close in and the creditors call in their debts, and she’s living on the streets. And her husband trades her in for a supportive wife what gives him more respect. Just for her attitude, I’d never want to stay there.
How come we never see the food or restaurant throughout!?…..no good having great rooms only!
she did a good job for 6k! If that was truly the price!
wowzers!
16 years (2007), as of 2023, but fair enough. £6,000 pounds in 2007 would have the approximate purchasing power of £10,000 today. Still seems like fairly good value for money.
Imagine if they had to have $ set aside for medical insurance on top of that, or medical payments monthly.
The room was the bygone spender. The new bathroom was not in keeping with its modernity. It should have had an old-fashioned standing bath with the taps coming from the side. Simler fashion to the first bathroom we saw
Overall, Eastbeach seems to be doing well with generally good reviews on TripAdvisor, and seems to still be owned by Heidi Cowderoy. But in 2019 the place was still hosting coach trippers, and in 2021 it was brought to the market with an asking price of £2.19m.
That said, I'm marveling at the number of petty comments about Heidi's smile, her taste in clothes, etc.. Maybe two years of covid isolation frayed some folks' priorities.
I suppose I am partly to blame for approving the comments such as you describe. I walk a fine line between wanting to allow for differing opinions while not allowing those that are overly insulting or abusive. (P.S. - you should see some of the comments that I have to read and delete without publishing!)
@@inhighspeed I can just imagine the comments you weed out.
I don't see a lot of harm in comments that are simply petty, they're just kinda sad. I'll sometimes put up a comment when I see a certain level of idiocy. People comment to be noticed. I want them to know they've succeeded but not in the way they imagined. Surely they can do better.
Thanks for all the program postings and all your hard work!

she should get a job as interer designer she is very good at that the downstairs and corridors could have least had a cheaper update tan the rooms instead of none other inspectors would have done downstairs for them
I have visited the UK over the last four decades many times. The hotels and B&Bs have never impressed me. Not everyone can spend 200 quid a night for a hotel. Therefore there is a need for such hotels. That said, I have paid top dollar for the WORST conditions I have ever seen in the UK. Even in countries like Kenya or Russia, I've seen better! This issue of horrible hotels 🏨 needs to be addressed before tourism sees a drop!
I love that the new rooms now look hideous.
We do bathroom 🚽 renovations for people in Australia at $20,000 thousand not including bathroom fittings 😉😉 profit $15,000 thousand 😉😉😉😉😉
Dining room tablecloths, uuughhh
Heidi. Take care of your health. Have you ever been tested for low Thyroid levels ? I really think it's worth a check up. All the best. 😊
Where do these hotel owners come from ? Why 4 poster bed ! Who cares !
Wait a minute...all the accusations of "overspending" seem to me, unjustified. On the one hand, husband and Ruth shake their heads over what they label as excessive - on the other hand, praise the result, the elegant and high income hotel rooms the spending produces! So, where is the "overspending" if in the end, the transition from the "coach crowd" to the high paying guests pays off!? Wouldn't one then say the spending was justified? With good travel writers reviews and a new season in the rebranded hotel, this could pay off very nicely. A case of - You need to spend money, to make money. In the end, it is the wife who is pulling the failing business out of the hole!
Did you actually listen? The wife is spending money they don't actually have and has already maxxed out credit cards. The couple are bankrupt and Ruth is trying to advise them to enable them to get out of trouble before the creditors move to sell the Hotel to get back the money they are owed
As long as the owners have no class, they'll never attract a classy clientele.
@@sonaterese799 Do YOU actually listen? Where the heck do you think money comes from when you haven't got the cash in your account!? You pull out all the stops and take that leap of faith, overspending in the moment with faith that your returns will pay off - and then, some! It's not like anyone they know is giving/lending them the money. Heidi took a big chance financially and fortunately, has the decorating skills to pull off a money-making reno - despite what her husband and Ruth had to say. Today, the business is getting good reviews and rents rooms from $61 to twice that per night. No more "coach parties" for the 70+ crowd at $18 per night...and, it's because of Heidi.
@@mattneillninasmom Well, they spent like six million and had to sell it for under three. I don't think she's doing a great job even though the rooms do look nice.
Ruth is a sharp business woman, talented and knows her stuff. This couple are not open to learn , change, improve. The wife is Stubborn af and not as bright or clever as she thinks
Heidi is no businesswoman. She has to change her lower middle class mindset
I felt so bad for Heidi when she broke down. I can’t imagine how stressful it would be to be under such scrutiny and, truly for all what seemed to be bravado, she desperately wanted people - Ruth, in particular- to be proud of her and not give up on her. Although it didn’t show in the common areas, the lady’s got some wicked good decorating skills and she obviously wants guests to be comfortable and enjoy their rooms even if they were only paying a pittance for it. You don’t find many business people like that anymore; they all want thirty pounds of flesh for every pound they spend.
If she wanted people she should know that guests will always be judging her and the hotel just like the journalists as well as Ruth. Don't know what her emotional issues are about that, but they certainly get in the way of success. And, yes, she really does have decorating skills which are easy with unlimited budgets.
Oh Ruth... I'm so disappointed in your opinion with the Room you are staying in. It's still tacky as Hell!!.. For once, I am going against Ruth...
Heidi: I LOVE YOUR REFURBISHED $6,000 pound ROOM. The one with the 4-Poster Bed!!! That is a room I could and would, stay in, comfortably!! Room 28 was nice as well, at $8,000 pounds...
One note, if you are going to place the Jacuzzi Tub next to the toilet, put up a curtain between the two, to separate them. No one wants to sit in a tub, right next to the toilet!!
The wife is a spoilt brat! Her husband has no control in the spending. He let’s her spend rather than have an argument.
The women is totally irresponsible.
I like the reality of this show but the owners are either fantasists or delusional
Only seven minutes in and already one minute of recapping. Are these shows made for people with attention deficit syndromes?
Ah, no, that was merely my weak attempt at humor. I think the recaps were orignally inserted for utility after advert breaks, not necessarily for folks with attention problems.
I’m trying hard, but I don’t like her style as much as Alex. Is she not doing this show any longer?
Calling the name "red Indian " is really bad 👎 😑
Did not like this woman at all !!
RED INDIAN"S !!!!!!!!!!!! WOW Native Americans . Have some respect
" Cheapskates " "those people ". Who does Ruth think she is - these are pensioners wanting a holiday on a small budget, a game of bingo in the evenings, a drink or two, an adequate breakfast etc. not too much to ask. Where will these folks go if all the hotel cater for the wealthy, money no object brigade. Sadly I am disappointed with Ruth and her attitude. Won't watch any more episodes .
this is why I prefer Alex. there is a need for every level of accommodation and some hotels can takes coaches and make a decent profit from them. But you don't spend 8k renovating those rooms.
She isnt meaning for all hotels not to take them, but from ruths point of view shes dealing with owners of hotels who are on the brink of losing everything and closing so those pensioners wont bring them the income they need to survive. She is trying to help people out of debt and make a living to survive. Her job isnt to cater for pensioners. She does her job well i think but the owners are all clueless and put themselves in a mess by thinking they can walk into things they really cant handle.
I am a penisioner trying to exist on a government pension but I think those old people are cheapskates and I feel ashamed for them. If they can't afford to pay a decent price for a Hotel room, they should stay at home
Please do not use the term 'red Indian'. The indigenous people of North America are either Native, Aboriginal, Indigenous, First Nations or Inuit. That phrase should have been bleeped out when it aired. Bad taste on the networks side.
@@mbonder963 According to anthropologists the only place humans were "native" is Africa so only Africans are natives; everywhere else on the globe humans are invasive.
It was back in 2007, the time was different. Nobody was offended till now
“Red Indian” is extremely offensive. Where the hell did that come from? I can’t believe she actually said that out loud. It’s like saying the “n” word. Why would she say something like that? Please tell people in the UK that is extremely offensive to Native Americans and to never, ever say that again.
The term is used in the U.K. and some other commonwealth countries to discern between American Indians and Indians from the Indian subcontinent, and is not objected to in the same way it may be in other places. I wouldn't say that they should not make more of an effort to be sensitive if that is truly the consensus, only that it does not have the same stigma in those places. I'm also doubtful that the word is taken to be as offensive to Native American Indians as it is to whites who feel the need to watch over them in a manner or tone that may come off as paternal or sanctimonious. In this vein, a survey of Native Americans indicated that they did not object to the team name "Redskins' as much as white people did ("New poll finds 9 in 10 Native Americans aren’t offended by Redskins name," Washington Post, May 19, 2016; John Woodrow Cox, Scott Clement and Theresa Vargas). One may assume that they also would not object to the term you are objecting to, especially not to the same overwhelming extent.
“Red Indians”?? Boy, have times changed since this was filmed! Completely racist and unacceptable expression nowadays. It’s Indigenous peoples, or Native Americans (in the USA) or First Nations (Canada). Indians are from India, period.
With the word Indian itself I don't think it is true in all cases, according to, among other sources, the National Museum of the American Indian. "American Indian, Indian, Native American, or Native are acceptable and often used interchangeably in the United States; however, Native Peoples often have individual preferences on how they would like to be addressed. To find out which term is best, ask the person or group which term they prefer." I've read articles as well that state that it seems to be younger people, most often non-indigenous younger people, who feel the way you do, who are offended on their behalf. But there seems to be a lot of that going on these days.
@@inhighspeed It would be TOTALLY unacceptable in Canada no matter who you ask. To even ask the question would be insulting. (I work in communications for the Canadian government.)
@ClaireBeatty Okay, well Canada is different. I agree that inquiring of a particular group what they prefer to be called is the right thing to do, but otherwise in the U.S. the term seems to be okay. (I will add, however, that even in the U.S. I believe that "Red Indian" is, as it well should be, unacceptable.)
As a follow-up, I read a survey of Native Americans that indicated that they did not object to the team name "Redskins' as much as white people did ("New poll finds 9 in 10 Native Americans aren’t offended by Redskins name," Washington Post, May 19, 2016; John Woodrow Cox, Scott Clement and Theresa Vargas). One may assume that they also would not object to the term you are objecting to, especially not to the same overwhelming extent.
