Written long before I was born I showed it to my daughter today who is in between 3rd and 4th grade. She adores it and thinks it was written about her. Timeless piece.
Beautiful song. Written, arranged and harmonized to perfection. Brian Wilson is a special guy. I know he went through a lot and wasn't afraid to put it out there when he was able to. I always wish him well.
The harmony is just amazing! It's actually really sad that people from my generation don't listen to this type of music anymore... They are really missing out! I adore this type of music today, and I always will. 😆
Was surprised a little to hear that Keith Richards was a fan of this song, but why not? It's beautiful. My high school back in the day performed this in chorus. Still gives me chills.
"In my room" - can be a metaphor for the inner life and soul. Always search for truth within. Always build your inner "room" as a place of peace and comfort where you can find refuge. So beautiful a song, makes me cry inside. I am a solid-core introvert and find peace in solitude.
Well said. As I think about what you wrote I am inclined to say, "Eureka !", yes that' it.When I was a kid I justplayed it over and over, in my room, but looking back I can see that your interpretation is apt.
Fellow introvert here. 3 things I'd rather do IN MY ROOM than anything else: 1. Take naps 2. Play video games 3. Enjoy 1 & 2 to this song Introverts Unite...In our own rooms😌.
THE SWEET HARMONY OF THE BEACHBOYS WAS FANTASTIC..I WAS 19 IN 1963 WHEN THIS SONG CAME OUT...63 A GREAT YEAR FOR PRETTY GIRLS, THE BEATLES,AND OF COURSE THE BEACHBOYS...
A song that always helps if you like solitude, a quiet place to reflect on your day, or your life, as Brian probably did back in 1963, when this was released. He didn't hesitate to express his feelings in this simple tune, and to let the world know. Has a lot of spiritual overtones. 😊😺🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸👍👍👍👍
i am 64 years old. this was from my time. no cell phones. no lap tops. no x boxes. no wide screen TV. No calculators, used a slide rule instead. U died years before your time. in 4 days, i out lived my dad who was 64 when he died on Sept 18, 1977. RIP Dad. My mom was 91 when she passed.
My condolences 🌹 This is a great song I read about brian having a nervous BREAKDOWN I had one to it was horrible I would listen to this song and pray 🙏🏻👍 Tk God I was taken out of Darkness But I still love this song and past it on to others...And yes the 70s were great...I'm 62 now alone with 4 little doggies and loving it..👍 I miss everyone there all gone I just enjoy the memories and the Beach Boy's were a big part of my life till today live on ✌🙏🏻👍🌹👙😁
I love this song... my cousin, Terry introduced me to one of their LPs back when I was around 11 or 12 and later I bought it and would play it over and over... in my room...He passed away too young in the 90's but to this day...this song reminds me of him😏🥰♥️ Thank you for sharing...
My teenage anthem. My room was my place, where I could hide from parents who were, let's be charitable, they are dead, not the best. Maybe my favorite of all Beachboys songs, which is saying a LOT. I mean, they outsold the Beatles in the U.S. in the Sixties. But it became bittersweet many decades later. I was in an enterprise that did a lot of work for them and their estates. That was cool, to be sure. But then, there was a falling out, and bad blood, and many millions changed hands. It did not end my love for them. Music isn't commerce, after all. But it cast a shadow that will always be there, and that is sad. For they captured a certain moment in America, a certain idea, that was intoxicating. It was also pretty white. I mean, not a lot of black surfer dudes, and none of the beachboys were either. But they helped create the surfing culture. And, old and ill as I am, and once having lived in Hawai'i, one of my few regrets in the world, I don't have many, is that I was always too tall and too uncoordinated and too blind to be able to surf. Their music gave me a taste of what it might have been like. And, of course, "Wipeout," but that would be a different group.
Makes me wanna go to my room;/ Their harmonies are so spot-on, and whither they croon about the carefree joy of surf, sun & sand, or the deep-seated pain of depression & despair, you feel their heart coming thru loud & clear. Beach Boys Forever! JillySurferGirlPet:) xo
One of "my songs" from 7th grade (new kid in school) until junior year. Bullied everyday. Senior year was different, pretty much left alone... Not even a blip on the radar. Best year of high school.
Paul McCartney claims the Rolling stones where NOT the Beatles primary rivals but the Beach boys. The 4 absolutely outstanding songwriters Brian Wilson/Mike Love and Lennon/McCartney gave our 1900s the greatest composers since Mozart, Bach and Beethoven with Beach boys and the Beatles.
+Dave Bartholome Great composers, no matter their individual brilliance, reflect their particular worlds; they are shaped and controlled by contemporary forces in addition to their genetic endowment. Beatles, Bach or Mozart? Bach was born in 1685 and died in 1750. Mozart (1756 -1791) was not even born until after Bach had died. Bach was 50 when he fashioned the Christmas Oratorio. A man at the height of his powers, he had two more decades of fruitful work ahead of him. Mozart’s Requiem was the final effort of a dying 35-year-old opening the doors to the next world. While both the Oratorio and the Requiem are religious works, they were written from very different perspectives. Bach cobbled together his Oratorio by converting parts of music dramas he had written earlier and adding new and previously composed hymns and arias. Mozart was commissioned to write a traditional mass for the dead, and he created startlingly innovative music within that structure. How did the different perspectives of the High Baroque and the Classical period affect these two composers and their compositions? The spirit of the Baroque was infused with a feeling of community and collectivity. While a composer’s effort was certainly recognized, his talent was expected to serve the accepted musical style. In keeping with Baroque practices, each movement of the Christmas Oratorio is monothematic; major contrasts occur between and not within movements; and single themes return in predictable cycles in what was known as ritornello form. Rhythms are repetitive, insistent, and relentless, and even dance forms are composed within strict limits. Every new music style is fundamentala based on other composers through history!
They were.. Brian has said that in many interviews that after he hears "Rubber Soul" that he thought to himself that he can't let them get ahead of him... That's when he began writing "Pet Sounds" which is said to have inspired "Sgt Pepper".. Paul McCartney has said "God Only Knows" is the greatest song ever written... It's definitely in the top 5 for sure.

About a month before I graduated from high school, I fell into a state of depression. I was so depressed that I stayed in bed for three days. I just didn't feel like doing anything. The following Fall after graduation didn't make anything better, I wasn't talking to friends like I use to because they were off at college or working. Such a beautiful song. I love the Beach Boys and actually just recorded this song on piano only. Hope you enjoy it.
I first heard this song in the 1996 movie "Mother" starring Debbie Reynolds and Albert Brooks. It is now one of my most favorite Beach Boys songs.

it so describes my life in this world! yet i strive to enjoy live life for what it is!

How could you not love this song? 39 people aren't talkin'!
When I was a teenager it was my room where I went to be alone and think. Now I'm older and retired I go to my shed.
Love this song. Check out Steve Perry's version on UA-cam. He released today 4/17. Steve's version compliments Brian Wilson's vision.
I like Steve’s version better. I can hear him singing it with a soft piano following him.
