While it's good to know where your wrist position is at this point, I think it's going to be a lot more beneficial to get your swing sequence down first. I'm not the longest hitter out there, but yesterday I was carrying my 7 iron 170 yards at the range with a small draw. Getting your swing in sequence will sort out a ton of these smaller issues.
Making grip super weak at address doesn't really change what he needs to accomplish for this players fault. This in sense is changing the whole release pattern to more of the DJ release which may not be ideal for that player along with changing his grip. Best to just work on less cupping at the top of his backswing. Cupped at address is just a strong grip.
