Utterly genius. My one complaint is that I am not sure if the older woman is intending to look the way she does or if she is just a bad actor. The younger woman is unbelievable, exquisite! Wow. The composer of this sublime song would be so pleased with her performance. (Sorry; I do not know the composer's name - but I'm gonna look it up now)
John Jeffers: After one of the rehearsals for the original MET production, Rosalind Elias, sing the role of Vanessa’s niece Erika, asked why all the other characters had a solo except hers. Barber and Menotti wrote “Must the winter come so soon” as a result. Rosalind Elias was a MET stalwart for many years, a kind woman, a wonderful artist and a smart one. What a gift she gave to other mezzo-sopranos with this aria!!
Gorgeously sung. Such a moving piece, too bad the rest of the opera does not rise to this level. Okay, the quintet near the end is pretty good, but the opera is pretty hollow. I admire ambers music in general but how Vanessa won the Pulitzer Prize is beyond me. No wonder it largely disappeared for half a century.
I love this song. I’m learning to sing it ❤️
Did you learn it?
Superb performance.
A stunning voice
Wow! Just wow! Thanks for the upload!
Très belle couleur de mezzo
Beautiful. Thanks for posting
No problem. There will be more Vanessa arias released over the next week.
Brava.
Exquisite
Stunning Interpretation of ERIKA'S aria "MUST THE WINTER COME SO SOON" from VANESSA by Samuel Barber with a libretto by Gian Carlo Menotti
it is not "ERIKA'S" aria - it is Samuel Barber's.
@@johnjeffers1524 Don’t be an a**. People aren’t that stupid.
Isn't Erica the character's name though
I'm here gonna learn the song and practicing it for winter is coming so soon
Tried and my dog thought I was upset because I got slobbered haha
i love your comment; it's so interesting. it is somewhat of a chiasmus - if you put a comma after "upset"
A recent interview with Virginie Verrez is available on opera wire
Nice video
Any chance of seeing the whole thing?
