I would not say that Rashan Gary was ever a "top tier" edge rusher. The second contract felt like justification for a top 10 pick that gets 8 sacks a year at best.
We need to draft players in the first round not projects. That would help the lack of studs on this team. For years the reaction to their 1st round pick was “WHO????”
Do you have a crystal ball to see who are going to be "players"? Go back and look at draft results and see players picked shortly after us and I think youll find there aren't numerous cant miss "players" for us to have selected.
@ Mahomes wasn´t a project and he played in college, Van Ness didn´t even play. ..early 1st rounders need to be at least usable from day 1 and now we are in "win now mode", the 2025 draft is not a project pick draft imo

He was the earliest pick for years, and Gute spended that pick on a guy who was a rotational guy his whole life instead of McDonald, Gonzales, Addison, Myles Murphy or Nolan Smith. Yeah, about 75% of the fanbase doesn't realize there are about 4-5 blue chip players and the Packers don't have a shot at them. It's easy to build an o-line and d-line like the Lions when they pick top ten for 20 yrs in a row

I think it would be interesting to do a bit of a compare/contrast in the packers draft philosophy with other teams in the league... Maybe some known bad drafting teams (like the raiders) and some known good drafting teams (eagles). I think that while the packers are definitely not perfect at drafting, looking at most other teams drafting histories would give some packers fans some much needed perspective 😂 as well as maybe seeing ways we could improve to get those all pro difference makers on cheap deals a bit more 🤷
2021: Myers instead of Humphrey gets talked about a ton, you brought it up here. In that same draft we took Amari Rodgers at 92, Amon-Ra St. Brown went 20 picks later at 112. Hindsight isn't fair but if we are going to talk about one missed All-Pro we should probably mention the other. Or neither lol.
Don’t think Amon Ra was on our radar. What pisses me off is that I was pounding the table for Nico Collins. He fit the packers thresholds to a T. Prototypical X guy. We go outside our thresholds and our typical tendencies and end up with an old Amari Rodgers. Bad process.
I think one of Gutey's huge flaws is drafting good college players that are on the small/skinny side and expecting them to fill out in the NFL. But, they end up being fragile, often injured, and even if good players when healthy, they don't last long, and it's back to the drawing board. Also. He needs to not pick players with injury histories. It's unconscionable how many of his first round picks missed a substantial number of games in their first few years.
Gutey can nail this 1st round. Got 3 prospects who should be drafted around the #23 spot, CB Benjamin Morrison, DE Mike Green (Crosby bend), or DT Kenneth Grant. Really love Morrison and Green.
Re: DT Kenneth Grant of Michigan, his ability to play all 3 downs is a concern. A R2 of later pick, IMO. Re: DE Mike Green of Marshall, at 248 Lbs., he has the size of a 3-4 OLB, not a 4-3 DE that GB needs. OSU's DE Jack Sawyer is a potential option for GB in R1. S Nick Emmanwori of South Carolina is an option for GB. NE is special at 6-3, 227 w/ 4.38 speed.

I think people are overrating the success picking later. I mean he basically got no one until 2022, and what people often fail to recognize is half the reason the 2022 and beyond draft classes have more players looking like hits, is because 2018-2021 was so bad that they simply just had to replenish the roster and guys were gonna play regardless. The youngest team in football is as much an indictment on their previous draft classes as it is a badge of honor.
@@RedMo46 Still, overall the Packers have generally had better production in the 2nd and 4th and later rounds than the third. It's not a law written in stone, but it's enough to take notice. Marshaun Lloyd's multiple injuries worry me. It's like his entire body went "Nope!" The greatest ability is availability and until Lloyd can stay healthy I can't count on him.
The issue with Gute are his draft and develop philosophy in the first round. Players drafted in the first round have to have an immediate impact. Not be developing pieces. First round projects? Development in a 2-3 year window. In order to be able to compete for the Super Bowl you cannot maintain that philosophy. First round picks have to fill an immediate hole on your team.
Tell that to the Green Bay bottom line. First round picks, in fact the entire draft, are for securing a strong financial future 4-5 years down the road for him and the goons that run the org

since I lived thru the transition, GB was in a really bad spot but they never burned it down to the ground. They did clean house and changed the way the franchise was run. IMHO it was more of a mature evolution than a burn it down revolution. B Harlan knew he needed to hire a GM and let him do his job without interference from the higher ups. Wolfe then went to the best run organization in the NFL, at the time, SF, and hired their OC, M Holmgren. They then used the SF model for how to run the organization. GB became and continues to utilize the SF organizational model. Hiring Policy further cemented that philosophy. The SF model runs thru every level of the Packers and will continue to be the model for the foreseeable future.

HOWEVER, what the Packers tend to do is prioritize RAS over nearly everything else (exceptions being primary positions and lack of severe character red flags - they want decent guys that play CB, DL, Edge, OT, & QB as well). What I would like for the Packers to focus more on are guys that ALSO have a decent fundamental base and kinda know how to play the position. The Packers draft too many "Projects" in the First Round. I get that the fundamental guys might have a lower RAS, but if it isn't too drastic of a difference draft them instead of the guys that are desperately under prepared for the NFL. I don't want a 1st round pick with an RAS of 5, but if a proven player has an RAS of 8.2, PLEASE Packers pick him over the neophyte with an RAS of 8.8! They’ve been the best unit in the nfl when it comes to pro scouting but scouting for the draft has been rough. Maybe time to shake things up. Think they’ve been reaching for need and not true bpa
Gute needs to stop taking a “high ceiling, work in progress” player in the first round. RG, LVN, JL, and JM all fit that bill. He needs to stop reaching and pick immediate impact players in the first round. Pick your developmental players in the later rounds
I agree 100%. We spend our high round picks on these types of players. If you grade him on his Round 1-3 picks it's not pretty. We have some solid players at best but nothing close to best at position.
@@roofchees9 I think what he means by project players are players who are drafted high based mostly on the way the player works out instead of their play on the field. You could say Rashan Gary was a project in the sense when they drafted him, the GM said they just got the best linebacker in the draft. Since he didn't play that position in college or high school, he based that only on his workout. You could say the same for Lucas Van Ness and Luke Musgrave. Van Ness hardly played and was being projected to play the edge (just like Gary) even though he was more of an interior lineman who was undersized (and still is) for that position. Musgrave was often injured in college who was not a good blocker and seemed to get tackled by the first guy to hit him every time. Both were high draft picks based more on workouts than actual on field production.
@ I understand what a project player vs a pro ready player is. My point is can’t miss prospects sometimes are bad (Evan Neal). Sometimes project players are good right away (josh Allen) Sometimes players that didn’t play a lot in college are really good pros (clay Matthews). Sometimes injured college players are great pros (Gronk). But you don’t know until you draft them. And I believe Gute prefers to take players that have athletic traits similar to the best players in the league vs a slow receiver who had a lot of production in college but has a low ceiling.
The biggest question about Ben Johnson is can he develop a QB. There is nothing in his past that shows he is able to do this (note he was never asked to develop a QB). If he cannot develop Caleb then nothing else matters.
Gute has to rework how he thinks about the 1st round. Take the football player, and what I mean by that is the player that is ready to play. Don’t draft a project, an athlete and try molding them into a player, to mold them into a football player. I’ve given up on LVN, what a disaster of a pick that was at 13.
Packers management have always been concerned with the future and always neglecting the present. It's frustrating because we are always good but never good enough to win the superbowl.
Even these last few classes that came on really strong haven't made any notabke jumps over their first couple seasons. Tucker kraft is one of the only ones i can think of, zack tom... Most of them seem like they peak in year 1
Gute has to take responsibility, the draft capital on defense in the high rounds is disproportionate to that of the offense. Still no pass rush, no depth at corner.
I think the playoffs and how the division leaders shook out says a lot about where our division is right now. Eagles, Rams, and yes, Buccaneers (even without Tom Brady), are seen as contenders in their division while the NFC North came down to week 18. This division is up for grabs and will remain that way until someone makes it to the Super Bowl. Our HOF QB twilight years are over, they've packed up and went to L.A. The Packers can't afford to remain complacent if we want compete in this division, let alone bring home another Lombardi.
Yeah, I walk away from this thinking that Gutey is great at building a solid starter roster but at its core he struggles at identifying game changing talent.

Jaire hasn’t been actually an elite well rounded CB since 2020. Andy’s grades reflect that. He’s just been good-great in coverage a handful of games on average per year since 2021 while missing over half the snaps. That’s the reality of where we’re at, and why his contract can’t be justified. Add in his antics and he’s done in GB.

Yes, but that was Ted Thompson's fault, not Brian Gutenkust. Vince Bagel was a 4th Round pick, too. How many teams passed on Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson or Tom Brady? (Answer: enough to make every other team look foolish by comparison. Even IF teams picked after the Mahomes pick, IF they had knowledge of the future would trade away whatever it took to get Mahomes.) One example over a thousand decisions does not make a valid point.
I would go so far as to say that he's consistently better than the average teams. While Matt LaFluer deserves a lot of credit, it's hard to make chicken salad out of chicken droppings. Getting to the playoffs on a consistent basis is a reflection of the entire organization.
Fortunately, his free agent signings and trades are much better than his draft history, specially in early rounds. GB scouting has to improve significantly if we are going to have any hope of SuperBowl win with this regime.
This isn’t entirely true. Gutey is objectively pretty good at drafting average to above average players. The roster is littered with them and this is a talent in and of itself. The Packers, for as much as people like to complain, are regularly in the playoffs despite a young largely draft and develop strategy. Teams don’t do that if they are “bad” at drafting and the old excuse that it was Aaron Rodgers carrying a badly drafted team can no longer be used as we have had multiple good seasons without him. However, where Gutey does struggle is in drafting great players. Overall though there are very few teams that you could argue clearly draft better than the Packers ESPECIALLY when you consider how low the Packers draft most years due to their record.

Their wins include the bears, saints, colts, titans, jaguars, rams without puca, Stafford, and kupp, the cardinals. They got sent home in round 1 after going to the divisional last season and controlling the game vs the NFCs super bowl team.

R1 picks should be judged in part by the players passed over that went on to play well. Re: GB's 2024 R1 pick at #25 OT Jordan Morgan, "played OK" is generous; an R3 or lower caliber player IMO. Passed over players: #39 DL Braden Fiske by LA Rams and #40 CB Cooper DeJean by Philly. Those 2 R2 picks are both D rookie of the year candidates.
Call a spade..a spade. "Foundation building" is the problem if you use that ideology in 1st round. Game changers is probably a better word. Focus needs to be on game changers. At this point I dont have a lot of confidence is the 1st round selections. Good news is according to Gutey's presser he did highlight the flaws (project picks). Hopefully things improve. Lastly a solid way to evaluate the sucess of a draft pick is to see how well that players does after he leaves the team. If he has a tenured career with other teams that is a true success. Also...I got a saying..if you are often injured, high-priced, and cant play. You should say Good bye to Green Bay. 2 or more incomplete years of "ifs" cant win superbowls for what they are paid. Last year we had two 2nds and two 3rds. Year before that we had two 2nds. Year before that we had two FIRSTS. This year we just have the standard 1 per round. It would be very, very difficult for this to be his best year ever given those facts.

There is a lot of nuance in those assumptions. Rodgers didn’t have a history of working well with rookies. It’s also impossible to disentangle the Love impact (if any) on the subsequent MVP performances. Lot of other factors too, obviously. It’s hard to accept at face value that any team is 1 late first round pick from a championship.

BG also traded up with Miami, giving #30 & #136 to get pick #26 for Jordan Love. The next QB taken in the 2020 draft was in R2 with Philly taking Jalen Hurts at #53. I am fairly certain that BG could have gotten Jordan Love at #30 without the trade up. The trade up seemed like a message for Aaron Rodgers, who went on to become the MVP, twice.
I think that some added perspective would be beneficial. How does Brian Gutenkust compare to the rest of the GMs around the league? OR how does his drafting compare to the other NFC North teams? Like, in the 2018 draft how many picks are still with the Vikings, Lions and Bears? 2019? 2020 and so forth? That, I believe, would better conceptualize this episode in my mind. Thank you 🙏
Yeah well doing that for 32 teams for 7 draft classes isn’t exactly ideal lol. And not all draft classes are created equal. Everyone has different picks/assets so it’s not apples to apples anyway.

Doesn’t mean he’s horrendous since they’ve gotten starters who’ve played some quality ball, but this has largely been a free agency carried team and Ted Thompson pick driven team over the Gutey era.

Gutey has drafted Love, Jenkins, Thom, Ryan, Walker, Kraft, Gary (who I believe made the Pro Bowl this year), Cooper, Valentine, Williams and Bullard. The Packers have also been a playoff team in 5 of his 7 years and have 4 seasons of 11+ wins. That doesn't happen if the GM can't draft. Yes, Gutey hasn't had a lot of success in hitting home runs, but dang does he hit for a high average and gets a lot of doubles and singles. The Packers could do MUCH worse at GM and I still hold out hope that some of those doubles and singles turn into triples and home runs. Or maybe he'll knock one out of the park in April.
I would rather have John Dorsey as GM. He is a fab talent evaluator. Gutie's first round draft picks usually have no impact on the team for 2-3 years. By that time, you've wasted half of their low-salary rookie contract. First round draft choices should be impactful the first year. Not all pros but certainly recognizable as a talent.
It should be obvious that Gute doesn't want top tier or star power from his draft. They can't handle those players in GB. Slow and steady fills the roster and keeps the record above average
we need to draft good proven players out of college not just random players with good athletic scores, football isn’t only athleticism. can you play or not? we have so many bust cuz we draft guys who can move side by side faster than average instead of guys who can catch the ball, run with the ball, get off blocks, cover a man. never excited for the draft because we draft no name players because they have a good RAS… fck RAS get someone who can ball out and proven that they can play ball.
I like Gutekunst. Nevertheless, is it fair to say that he has been good but not Ozzie Newsome level great (yet)? He's done great in later rounds, but not in 1st rounds. He needs to also have the mindset of "competing for championships" in his approach, in daily working his tail off with his scouting staff to improve the roster every season. I'm not saying he doesn't have that. Just that he must if the Packers are to move from good to great. Gutekunst needs to draft his arse off, the coaches need to coach their arse off, and the players need to play their arse off. Small town Green Bay must have great drafts because most value free agents don't come there unless they overpay. The fact they have been at least good most seasons is a credit to Gutekunst. But I hope he never settles for that--that he keeps pushing himself to get better along with the coaching staff and players. As fans, we need to be as informed as possible for us so that our support both in terms of praise and criticism is objective, fair, accurate.
If you are a 1st round pick and haven't played an immediate impact..unless you are injured. Your 1st round placement should be questioned or the teams choice to play the player.
There are no stars in the first 3 rounds for 6 drafts. What has happened to our scouts? I evaluated every draft during Covid. If you do hit, All-Pros and HOFers in round 1 or 2. You are in trouble. Gutey has drafted 3 Pro Bowlers in those rounds. None are impact players, stars, or HOF players. He's had some good picks late. Kraft and Rhyan might break the 3rd round issues that are a problem for this franchise historicly. Maybe Gutey needs to go?
I think your "evaluation" could be suplemented by a comparison to the rest of the league. What% of players per team get a second contract? What % of first rounders become starters or get a second contract? How does Guety stack up against the entire league? Do a comparative on initial draft grades with 3-4 years after. How accurate were these dradt grades? Just remove the first 11 mins of this entire piece and get to it. Basically Guty's draft picks up to this point grade out to a B-. Good enough for the business of football but not good enough for greatness.
I think your grade of B- could be supplemented by a comparison to the rest of the league. Just remove the first three sentences of your response and get to it.

Gute is commonly considered a great drafter but when you actually break it down, he's PISS POOR! And the Love pick has to be looked at in context. It spelled disaster for the end of Rodger's career, and may not usher in the next great era of Green Bay QBs like people hope
I wouldn't say they have continued what Pat, Ron and mike started. They went off track when they allowed a sick Ted Thompson to choose a successor in Brian Gutekunst. Why allow that and not see the guy sitting as Teds right hand in Eliot Wolf? The packers would have not only seen a super bowl or won a few had Eliot got the job. How they let Eliot wolf out of that building is really stupid. Gute is bad at drafting. drafting bad is why the lions and vikings have got better. there bears look like they will become a third team to worry about. I think you might have revealed the real reason the Packers have failed in their draft and develop strategy. The front office, I believe has always, with coaches, and with players had one eye on the money line and one eye on the football team. Because the Packers are in such a small market, and lack the billionaire ownership backing, they have to always consider money in order to stay solvent. When you mentioned that Matt Lafluer wanted Rizzi as special teams coordinator, and his price was too rich for the Packers, could that be true of all of his assistant coaches, and thus young inexperienced coaches, are hired instead of experienced proven position coaches who know how to develop young players. When you add that to reach draft picks that already are projects that need to be developed more than finished products, you have the recipe for inconsistent play and failure in key moments.

Brian Gutekunst does like to attack the needs in the NFL Draft. And when he does, he takes multiple chances. That’s what he did in 2023, taking 2 Tight Ends on Day 2 to fill a huge need on the roster. It’s hard to have an immediate impact from Tight Ends, because it’s one of the most difficult positions to transition from college to the NFL. However, both Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave have shown excellent signs as rookies, and their potential is extremely high. Go Pack Go 💚💚💛💛
Gute and love are the most overrated "professionals" in the world of football. Has anyone been able to determine how much Gute's ridiculous player contracts have cost the organization? Signing Rodgers to a three year outrageous contract only to trade him after year number one? Negotiating $55,000,000 a year for a QB that played exceptionally for half a season? He got lucky on a couple of draft picks..... Adding on to that how he traded or cut players that had an immediate negative impact on the team. He has no respect for the veterans on the team.

I think it would be interesting to do a bit of a compare/contrast in the packers draft philosophy with other teams in the league... Maybe some known bad drafting teams (like the raiders) and some known good drafting teams (eagles). I think that while the packers are definitely not perfect at drafting, looking at most other teams drafting histories would give some packers fans some much needed perspective 😂 as well as maybe seeing ways we could improve to get those all pro difference makers on cheap deals a bit more 🤷

Don’t think Amon Ra was on our radar. What pisses me off is that I was pounding the table for Nico Collins. He fit the packers thresholds to a T. Prototypical X guy. We go outside our thresholds and our typical tendencies and end up with an old Amari Rodgers. Bad process.
I think one of Gutey's huge flaws is drafting good college players that are on the small/skinny side and expecting them to fill out in the NFL. But, they end up being fragile, often injured, and even if good players when healthy, they don't last long, and it's back to the drawing board. Also. He needs to not pick players with injury histories. It's unconscionable how many of his first round picks missed a substantial number of games in their first few years.

Re: DT Kenneth Grant of Michigan, his ability to play all 3 downs is a concern. A R2 of later pick, IMO.
Re: DE Mike Green of Marshall, at 248 Lbs., he has the size of a 3-4 OLB, not a 4-3 DE that GB needs.
OSU's DE Jack Sawyer is a potential option for GB in R1.
S Nick Emmanwori of South Carolina is an option for GB. NE is special at 6-3, 227 w/ 4.38 speed.

I think people are overrating the success picking later. I mean he basically got no one until 2022, and what people often fail to recognize is half the reason the 2022 and beyond draft classes have more players looking like hits, is because 2018-2021 was so bad that they simply just had to replenish the roster and guys were gonna play regardless. The youngest team in football is as much an indictment on their previous draft classes as it is a badge of honor.

@@RedMo46 Still, overall the Packers have generally had better production in the 2nd and 4th and later rounds than the third. It's not a law written in stone, but it's enough to take notice. Marshaun Lloyd's multiple injuries worry me. It's like his entire body went "Nope!" The greatest ability is availability and until Lloyd can stay healthy I can't count on him.
The issue with Gute are his draft and develop philosophy in the first round. Players drafted in the first round have to have an immediate impact. Not be developing pieces. First round projects? Development in a 2-3 year window. In order to be able to compete for the Super Bowl you cannot maintain that philosophy. First round picks have to fill an immediate hole on your team.

As a GB fan who lived in Chicago for twenty + years, this is an absolutely spot on analysis of the Bears and their new coaching staff.
since I lived thru the transition, GB was in a really bad spot but they never burned it down to the ground. They did clean house and changed the way the franchise was run. IMHO it was more of a mature evolution than a burn it down revolution. B Harlan knew he needed to hire a GM and let him do his job without interference from the higher ups. Wolfe then went to the best run organization in the NFL, at the time, SF, and hired their OC, M Holmgren. They then used the SF model for how to run the organization. GB became and continues to utilize the SF organizational model. Hiring Policy further cemented that philosophy. The SF model runs thru every level of the Packers and will continue to be the model for the foreseeable future.

HOWEVER, what the Packers tend to do is prioritize RAS over nearly everything else (exceptions being primary positions and lack of severe character red flags - they want decent guys that play CB, DL, Edge, OT, & QB as well). What I would like for the Packers to focus more on are guys that ALSO have a decent fundamental base and kinda know how to play the position. The Packers draft too many "Projects" in the First Round. I get that the fundamental guys might have a lower RAS, but if it isn't too drastic of a difference draft them instead of the guys that are desperately under prepared for the NFL. I don't want a 1st round pick with an RAS of 5, but if a proven player has an RAS of 8.2, PLEASE Packers pick him over the neophyte with an RAS of 8.8! That 8.8 ain't going to show up on film if the guy doesn't understand the game or proper technique.

I agree 100%. We spend our high round picks on these types of players. If you grade him on his Round 1-3 picks it's not pretty. We have some solid players at best but nothing close to best at position.

@@roofchees9 I think what he means by project players are players who are drafted high based mostly on the way the player works out instead of their play on the field. You could say Rashan Gary was a project in the sense when they drafted him, the GM said they just got the best linebacker in the draft. Since he didn't play that position in college or high school, he based that only on his workout. You could say the same for Lucas Van Ness and Luke Musgrave. Van Ness hardly played and was being projected to play the edge (just like Gary) even though he was more of an interior lineman who was undersized (and still is) for that position. Musgrave was often injured in college who was not a good blocker and seemed to get tackled by the first guy to hit him every time. Both were high draft picks based more on workouts than actual on field production.
@ I understand what a project player vs a pro ready player is. My point is can’t miss prospects sometimes are bad (Evan Neal). Sometimes project players are good right away (josh Allen) Sometimes players that didn’t play a lot in college are really good pros (clay Matthews). Sometimes injured college players are great pros (Gronk). But you don’t know until you draft them. And I believe Gute prefers to take players that have athletic traits similar to the best players in the league vs a slow receiver who had a lot of production in college but has a low ceiling.

The biggest question about Ben Johnson is can he develop a QB. There is nothing in his past that shows he is able to do this (note he was never asked to develop a QB). If he cannot develop Caleb then nothing else matters.

I think the playoffs and how the division leaders shook out says a lot about where our division is right now.
Eagles, Rams, and yes, Buccaneers (even without Tom Brady), are seen as contenders in their division while the NFC North came down to week 18.
This division is up for grabs and will remain that way until someone makes it to the Super Bowl.
Our HOF QB twilight years are over, they've packed up and went to L.A. The Packers can't afford to remain complacent if we want compete in this division, let alone bring home another Lombardi.

Jaire hasn’t been actually an elite well rounded CB since 2020. Andy’s grades reflect that. He’s just been good-great in coverage a handful of games on average per year since 2021 while missing over half the snaps. That’s the reality of where we’re at, and why his contract can’t be justified. Add in his antics and he’s done in GB.

Fortunately, his free agent signings and trades are much better than his draft history, specially in early rounds. GB scouting has to improve significantly if we are going to have any hope of SuperBowl win with this regime.
This isn’t entirely true. Gutey is objectively pretty good at drafting average to above average players. The roster is littered with them and this is a talent in and of itself. The Packers, for as much as people like to complain, are regularly in the playoffs despite a young largely draft and develop strategy. Teams don’t do that if they are “bad” at drafting and the old excuse that it was Aaron Rodgers carrying a badly drafted team can no longer be used as we have had multiple good seasons without him.
However, where Gutey does struggle is in drafting great players.
Overall though there are very few teams that you could argue clearly draft better than the Packers ESPECIALLY when you consider how low the Packers draft most years due to their record.

There is a lot of nuance in those assumptions. Rodgers didn’t have a history of working well with rookies. It’s also impossible to disentangle the Love impact (if any) on the subsequent MVP performances. Lot of other factors too, obviously. It’s hard to accept at face value that any team is 1 late first round pick from a championship.

Doesn’t mean he’s horrendous since they’ve gotten starters who’ve played some quality ball, but this has largely been a free agency carried team and Ted Thompson pick driven team over the Gutey era.

Gutey has drafted Love, Jenkins, Thom, Ryan, Walker, Kraft, Gary (who I believe made the Pro Bowl this year), Cooper, Valentine, Williams and Bullard. The Packers have also been a playoff team in 5 of his 7 years and have 4 seasons of 11+ wins. That doesn't happen if the GM can't draft. Yes, Gutey hasn't had a lot of success in hitting home runs, but dang does he hit for a high average and gets a lot of doubles and singles. The Packers could do MUCH worse at GM and I still hold out hope that some of those doubles and singles turn into triples and home runs. Or maybe he'll knock one out of the park in April.

I would rather have John Dorsey as GM. He is a fab talent evaluator. Gutie's first round draft picks usually have no impact on the team for 2-3 years. By that time, you've wasted half of their low-salary rookie contract. First round draft choices should be impactful the first year. Not all pros but certainly recognizable as a talent.

I like Gutekunst. Nevertheless, is it fair to say that he has been good but not Ozzie Newsome level great (yet)? He's done great in later rounds, but not in 1st rounds. He needs to also have the mindset of "competing for championships" in his approach, in daily working his tail off with his scouting staff to improve the roster every season. I'm not saying he doesn't have that. Just that he must if the Packers are to move from good to great. Gutekunst needs to draft his arse off, the coaches need to coach their arse off, and the players need to play their arse off. Small town Green Bay must have great drafts because most value free agents don't come there unless they overpay. The fact they have been at least good most seasons is a credit to Gutekunst. But I hope he never settles for that--that he keeps pushing himself to get better along with the coaching staff and players. As fans, we need to be as informed as possible for us so that our support both in terms of praise and criticism is objective, fair, accurate.

If you are a 1st round pick and haven't played an immediate impact..unless you are injured. Your 1st round placement should be questioned or the teams choice to play the player.

There are no stars in the first 3 rounds for 6 drafts. What has happened to our scouts? I evaluated every draft during Covid. If you do hit, All-Pros and HOFers in round 1 or 2. You are in trouble. Gutey has drafted 3 Pro Bowlers in those rounds. None are impact players, stars, or HOF players. He's had some good picks late. Kraft and Rhyan might break the 3rd round issues that are a problem for this franchise historicly. Maybe Gutey needs to go?
I think your "evaluation" could be suplemented by a comparison to the rest of the league. What% of players per team get a second contract? What % of first rounders become starters or get a second contract? How does Guety stack up against the entire league? Do a comparative on initial draft grades with 3-4 years after. How accurate were these dradt grades? Just remove the first 11 mins of this entire piece and get to it. Basically Guty's draft picks up to this point grade out to a B-. Good enough for the business of football but not good enough for greatness.
I think your grade of B- could be supplemented by a comparison to the rest of the league. Just remove the first three sentences of your response and get to it.

Gute is commonly considered a great drafter but when you actually break it down, he's PISS POOR! And the Love pick has to be looked at in context. It spelled disaster for the end of Rodger's career, and may not usher in the next great era of Green Bay QBs like people hope

I wouldn't say they have continued what Pat, Ron and mike started. They went off track when they allowed a sick Ted Thompson to choose a successor in Brian Gutekunst. Why allow that and not see the guy sitting as Teds right hand in Eliot Wolf? The packers would have not only seen a super bowl or won a few had Eliot got the job. How they let Eliot wolf out of that building is really stupid. Gute is bad at drafting. drafting bad is why the lions and vikings have got better. there bears look like they will become a third team to worry about. All he has to show for ten years as GM is Jenkins, Gary, Alexander, Clark and love. That's IT! that's terrible.

I think you might have revealed the real reason the Packers have failed in their draft and develop strategy. The front office, I believe has always, with coaches, and with players had one eye on the money line and one eye on the football team. Because the Packers are in such a small market, and lack the billionaire ownership backing, they have to always consider money in order to stay solvent. When you mentioned that Matt Lafluer wanted Rizzi as special teams coordinator, and his price was too rich for the Packers, could that be true of all of his assistant coaches, and thus young inexperienced coaches, are hired instead of experienced proven position coaches who know how to develop young players. When you add that to reach draft picks that already are projects that need to be developed more than finished products, you have the recipe for inconsistent play and failure in key moments.

Brian Gutekunst does like to attack the needs in the NFL Draft. And when he does, he takes multiple chances. That’s what he did in 2023, taking 2 Tight Ends on Day 2 to fill a huge need on the roster. It’s hard to have an immediate impact from Tight Ends, because it’s one of the most difficult positions to transition from college to the NFL. However, both Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave have shown excellent signs as rookies, and their potential is extremely high. Go Pack Go 💚💚💛💛
Gute and love are the most overrated "professionals" in the world of football. Has anyone been able to determine how much Gute's ridiculous player contracts have cost the organization? Signing Rodgers to a three year outrageous contract only to trade him after year number one? Negotiating $55,000,000 a year for a QB that played exceptionally for half a season? He got lucky on a couple of draft picks..... Adding on to that how he traded or cut players that had an immediate negative impact on the team. He has no respect for the veterans on the team.
