    If you remember a World Series played 50 years ago, you're old. Since I remember this World Series, I'm officially old. I wonder what Sharon Obeck is doing 50 years later.

    --Frank Umont was the plate umpire when Reggie Jackson took Dock Ellis deep in the '71 ASG. He retired after the '73 season, working the plate in the last game of Yankee Stadium I.
    --Bill Haller's second WS in five years. He also umpired in '78 and '82. Last umpire to wear the balloon in a WS game (G2 of '82). Still with us at 85.
    --Bob Engel was fired in 1990 after getting caught shoplifting
    --Jim Honochick appeared in Miller Lite commercials after retiring following the '73 season
    --Chris Pelekoudas and Milt Pappas are among the most prominent members of the Greek Baseball Hall of Fame
    --Mel Steiner's career ended after working second base at Riverfront in G7. Steiner reached the mandatory retirement age of 55 in November 1971, but was allowed to work '72 by Chub Feeney so he could go out by working his second WS (1966)

    20:57 mark - I was able to track down the exact song that the Oakland A's organist played as the rest of the As went on to the field in the starting lineup pre-game. It was called a section of "Recitation of Cassard" from "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg", a French feature film with the music soundtrack composed by Michel LeGrand. For those who know a lot of vintage songs, this song is generally called "Watch What Happens" in the English version.

      And that is why it was absolutely stupid to get rid of the requirement of throwing the four pitches for the IBB. MLB is the highest level of baseball on earth. If an MLB pitcher can't properly throw the four balls for the IBB, he doesn't need to be in MLB. What, it saves a minute or two? OH BOY. I know I can accomplish so much more with that extra minute or two!

      The reality is that Johnny Bench was at least half aware because the great Joe Morgan had shouted to him, "BE ALERT"..... it was the pitch Rollie threw.....a nasty breaking ball that Bench couldn't handle.

      Was very privileged to see them in concert at The Valley Forge Music Fair w/The Four Tops in early April 1974. I won the tickets in a radio promotion in coordination with picking up the tux for my prom at After Six Tuxedos. Chubby Checker was in the audience that evening too. It was like watching history being made as my prom date and I looked on. I am surprised that I remembered this now some forty-five years after the fact.

    What's with the Joe Garagiola artificial turf/real grass controversy taking away hits from Cincinnati? The A's were counter-culture then only because of the facial hair and being in the Bay Area. I was so glad to see them prevail but I still remember the sting of losing Game 5 on Blue Moon Odom being thrown out at home by Joe Morgan after a foul out.

    19:15 Check out Reggie exaggeratedly limping out onto the field before the game like he needs a walker. He's so full of crap.

    • @areguapiri
      @areguapiri 4 роки тому

      He had a badly torn hamstring. He shouldn't have walked out there in his condition.

    • @raymondswenson5529
      @raymondswenson5529 4 роки тому

      Reggie had been frustrated when he homered twice in '71 when they lost to the O's. In '72, he tore his hamstring scoring the winning run that put the A's in the series. He was determined to be on that field for introductions. Gene Tenace had driven him in for his only hit of the ALCS....hmmmmm. But Reggie got his moment in '73.

    • @douglassher1710
      @douglassher1710 4 роки тому +1

      @@raymondswenson5529 I don't doubt he had a real injury, of course he did. I think the limp was being exaggerated for sympathy points.

    • @raymondswenson5529
      @raymondswenson5529 4 роки тому

      I have to amend a comment I made. Tenace did drive home a run in game 5 in Detroit with his only hit in the playoffs, but Reggie scored the eventual winner and ruptured his hamstring on a delayed double steal....a play that was typical of those teams.

    Very cool to see Lefty Grove throw out the first pitch. He should have been given a rousing ovation. (Apparently he was not exactly a nice person, though.)

    • @DNSKansas
      @DNSKansas 4 роки тому

      Kuhn had to coax Lefty to come to Oakland. He was still bitter about the Athletics leaving Philly.
      As for not being a nice person, consider he played much of his career against one of the biggest assholes who ever graced any playing venue: TYRUS RAYMOND COBB.

      @UC-iEpEQu3XRyhU6uq_Kkx3w funny thing…Epstein bitched directly to Dick Williams after Game 2 for being pulled in the late innings for Mike Hegan, a far better glove at 1B. He got in Williams’ face on the flight back to Oakland. Williams told him to fuck off and to be ready to play Game 3. So what does Epstein do in this game? Drop a simple throw from Holtzman on Tolan’s bunt attempt.
