  • April 25th Onepagerules released patch 3.3.0.. Besides graphical changes to the rulebooks and a few description changes, two rather huge rule changes are included in the update.
    In this video I take a look at Shaken and Assault as well as the consequences of these rules to the game.

    To me, these additional updates to the core rules were just what OPR needed to really shine! They are lovely new decision points that have been added to the game, making it that bit more interesting to old grogs like me :D

      I agree with shaken.. Not sure about assault though.. Time will tell😊 Og tak.. Hvor spiller du fra?

      @@ulcbattlereports7388 Yeah, we'll have to see down the road - but I do think Assault will add a lot more dimension to the game, allowing also for throwing weapons in fantasy games etc.
      Jeg spiller primært i Vejle og Fredericia for tiden - vi er ikke mange (to-tre stykker) men det er ret hyggeligt :D

    Thanks for the summary of the rule changes. The new books look great. I think the Morale rule modifications are fine but I also liked the tension of trying to keep stunned units alive or even getting a lucky break and taking out a tough opponent by charging them when stunned. I think the Assault rules seem interesting but want to give them some table time before making a final decision (same with the Morale changes really). I am glad they mentioned slowing down the rule updates to a yearly change (unit changes may still be quarterly though). I felt like they are trying to compete with the other company but they don't really need to as OPR is such a better system and the other company does enough to chase people off to OPR. Just sit back and watch. 🤣 Anyway, thanks for the video. Take care.

    Remember, rules changes are now going to be once a year going forward after the drop of v3.3.

    I really enjoyed how lethal the stunned rules were. It encouraged you to keep units together while the objectives require you to spread out to cover the board. But now there's much less incentive to keep units close. I guess we'll see how it plays out.

      I feel the same way.. The rules need to be tested.. But to me, the very lethal stunned rule was kind of the "charm" of the game.. That changes.. Thanks for watching :-)

    The great thing about OPR is that if you and your crew don't like the new Shaken rules, you can always just go back to using the old Stunned rule.

      True.. Several rules can just be ignored or house ruled etc. But when the army lists and unit costs also change and adapt to new rules, it affects the balance of the game.. At least that’s a risk.. 👍

    Assault was kinda needed.
    Otherwise units woth melee snd ranged attacks were way too expensive.
    As they paid for both but could only use 1.

    At first I wasn’t too keen on another rule change but the”shaken” rule I think is an improvement. The assault adds a little more complication but I’ll give it a go.

      Shaken can definitely be an improvement.. I’ll also give it a go, but a fear yet another adjustment of assault soon..

    I actually like these rules for the most part! It never felt good losing a valuable and expensive unit because of a bad dice roll. There is also more of reason to balance your unit load outs as opposed to min maxing ranged or melee. Some tweaks i will probably make for our in home games is if your shaken you cannot charge over your move range and you only hit on sixes, no assault. As for assault i think you should only be allowed if you paid for a melee upgrade.

      I never got to test these new rules properly before they changed again with the 3.1.1 less than a week later! To me the rules are not the main issue now, it’s the changes that happens way to often and seem like they’re not though through.. Thanks for watching

    I think that a nice level of complexity is needed in the advanced game to appeal to a part of gamers that won't get into OPR because it's "to easy". May be even make the whole system free in the future, to avoid conflict and confusion spawning 2 kinds of OPR players. Also the rules updates shoud be only 2 times a year, no more. That way there is time to test well all changes.

      I completely agree.. Maybe assault is best suited as an advanced rule, but I also understand that many army points will depend on it.. Thanks for watching

    Personally, I'm pretty keen on trying out the new rules. Sure, there's gonna be a new level of book keeping required, but it adds a fresh layer of options available.
    I will reserve judgement until after I manage to get a few games in, but OPR just got a little more complex for sure.

    I think they are needed. Tabling new players with just shooting on turn 1 was fun for me but not for newer players.

    I really like shaken, i was using a almost identical houserule anyway.
    Assault seems fine, i'll to playtest but it seems fair to me.

      I think both rules need testing and time, so we can adjust to them.. Maybe they'll work fine even though I think there are some aspects to assault that doesn't seem logical.. Like no difference in what weapon you assault with.. But then again that would cause even more rules.. :-)

    I don't see this taking much longer. There's not a lot of 6" charging going on and when there is you generally know when your odds are better to use assault than not. A game or two and things will be the same speed as before.

      Maybe.. I’ll definitely test the new rules and feel how they affect the game.. I can’t really predict how much assault will be used.. But we’ll see😊

    Not sure how I feel about the new shaken rule for skirmish games. We have an AoFS game planned this coming weekend so we'll be testing it out. I also agree that I hope there will be fewer updates like these that change core rules. It's one of the reasons people moved away from GW's AOS and 40K rules.

      I think a lot of OPR players think the same way.. Too many changes too often will cause concern.. Personally I hope for a yearly update and maybe during that time, OPR can be open about what rules are being looked at etc. Thanks for watching

      @@ulcbattlereports7388 Overall, I think it’s a good sign that the game is being worked on and balanced. The alternative would be a game that people stop playing because of issues aren’t resolved. I just think maybe they can slow down updates and changes and give the rules some time to breathe.

    Rules are changing quickly 3.3.1 shaken has been changed and now units shaken must remain idle.

    Having always used the Suppression optional rules, the Shaken addition is very much superfluous and less detailed than the full total conversion I'm accustomed to.
    Again, the Assault rule looks very much similar to an extra action that's in the full rulebook, so... eh. Nice option to have in your toolbox but... eh.

    I'm gonna give it a try but I'm a bit worried.. I understand that assault grants unspecialized units some extra usefulness, but it:ll probably end up overpowering cheap mobs.. the shaken rule is not bad I guess, but it doesn't really add up with suppression extra rules .. Worst case scenario I'll stick to 3.2 which was perfect IMO

    Thank you sir, your video posts are most helpful. I noticed they've reworded the blast rule to make it easier but I fear it confused us even more unless we're all just think. Would you consider a short upon the blast rule? Thanks very .much

    I like the assault but feel like it should be a unique action or how actions flow should be reworked. I also feel that certain ranged weapons should not be able to be used in an assault to represent them being heavy or needing to be setup and/or some units having a rule that allows them to use those weapons in an assault like Battle Brother Destroyers.

      That’s true.. One aspect that doesn’t really makes sense.. I just played a game with Ogre Shooters literally with cannons! And they have the same assault conditions as a unit with small hand weapons.. But again, then we’ll get into different range weapon types and so on.. we know where that’ll probably end.. I’m not sure this is entirely thought through.. 👍

I think I’d get rid of the assault rule and say all units can shoot before charging at 6+ quality to shooting and combat, add an “assault weapon” weapons rule that allows said weapon to hit at unit quality 1- in an assault, a “heavy weapon” rule that requires unit to remain stationary to shoot, and a “heavy unit” rule that negates the “heavy weapon” rule for units like destroyers or vehicles.
      Edit- I’d also change from halving movement to reducing by 25%, so 9” normal, 6” for slow, and 12” for fast

    I always play with the extra actions. How does Heavy Charge interact with the assault charge? (By that I mean, is assault charge it's own separate action, it's not something you "add on" to a charge?")

      I would assume, that you cannot combine the two different extra actions..

    Does Shaken make regenerator less valuable or maybe even redundant?
    Assault is basically gun-fu ?

      I guess shaken now will make all units more difficult to remove - especially the units with some kind of regeneration/self-repair rule.. I'll test the new rules shortly and then we'll see how huge the difference is.. Thanks for watching :-)

    Continual updates and rule changes are the annoying “cash cow” for Games Workshop. Please do not follow that same path with OPR. I still play and have enormous fun, using the original OPR rules I initially used, once I decided not to blindly follow the GW bandwagon anymore.

    Totally unnecessary rules creep setting in. I wonder if they have this same fear as video game developers of being labeled a "dead game" that no one will want to play if they aren't constantly updating and tweaking things.

      I think it’s a mix of trying out new things, listening to the community and keep developing.. I can understand that, but the balance seems a bit off at the moment.. Why drop major changes in a 3.3 patch.. I mean, version 3 is relatively new.. did they really not consider any of these changes then?

      @@ulcbattlereports7388I think they should’ve either included this upon release of 3.0 or waited for 4.0. The assault rule is really cool but breaks with the OPR design paradigm. It needs a little more polish and better integration into the rules.

      absolutely. we didnt need assault nor shaken. we needed a rule like assault for tough3+ units... but now cheap low quality units which have massive amounts of attacks are even more overpowered

      ​@@gabrielmarquez402910 eldar guardiams in assault now dish out 20 rending attacks and 10 melee attacks... thats statistically 5 dead dpace marines against a 10 man which codts double the points.
      with evenly üriced 5 man squad they wipe the marines put while the space marines cant retaliate if evenly priced while the space marines kill statistically 1-2 in shooting and 1-2 in melee...
