It's about the depths that you will go to seek what you crave. How much of yourself will you let go of for this substance. It's written by only someone who truly knows what addiction is. "Comfort is a mystery, crawling out of my own skin." Can't live with myself without the influence and I'll do whatever it takes to change that. Lie, cheat, and steal. Beautiful song.
REALLY! hypnotizing. i fell out of my chair the other day drifting to this song. but even better... listen to this song on E and you will flip out hard core! lol
just saw em in san diego two days ago. Vocals were awesome. I'm a huge perfect circle fan AND tool fan. in concert, it's gotta be Tool. Harmony and singing while driving down the freeway,.... it's all Perfect Circle.
I love this song & great CD (13th Step). I wonder if Maynard is in the back (and has for other performances)because of what he believes about words being of lesser importance than the music to a song. I think Maynard really is an amazing performer, he's a little odd and he makes you want to watch him.
WHAT!! u here the scream on that guy, i had no clue he could get that heavy, and im a big apc and tool fan, just goies to show u , u need to see a band live to rly know them
i won't take credit for this interpretation but, some guy wrote that it's about a guy going into a doctor's office to obtain prescription drugs to feed an addiction, which makes perfect sense when you listen to the lyrics cuz the doctor would probably try and console u, but you have a one track mind (peripheral on the package don't care to settle in time to feed the monster don't need another friend). perfect way to open the album given it's subject matter so yea, just expounding on your post
i dont like to compare Tool to A Perfect Circle. they're both two completely different bands playing two different styles, built upon different foundations with individual meaning. but both are totally awesome and should live forever...
if you knew what you were talkin about u wouldnt think that. the entire cd is about dealing with addiction. go back and listen to it and there are interviews explaning it too
sorry you didnt get what i meant... i like listening to those musicians while IM on e...not when they are on e. however i like listening to them fullstop.
I think this song is about greed or obsession. "Lie to get what I came for, lie to get just what I need." Possibly an addiction to drugs or something else where you use your "clever" and "tricky" to get it.
what josh freese does when the distortion kicks in totally shows off his ability with arrangements. he groups everything in three and adds an extra fill beat every four measures, it sounds so natural but keeps u off balance every time.
You're kind of preaching to the choir bro...I think most people that enjoy apc know it isnt JUST about maynard. However, my understanding from his interviews is that maynard steps in after a lot of the music is written and writes his lyrics to match whatever emotions/thoughts that surface. So, I feel he does add quite a distinct twist, and elevates each song to a level of beauty that the music alone cant reach. Much love to APC and MJK.
Actually 13th Step is hooking up with the opposite sex during twelve step meetings, in all the rooms of A.A. or N.A. or whatever the 12 steps are listed there is no 13th step, people in the program dubbed the 13th step as not working the program and using the fellowship as a means to meet others and hook up.. But relapse soon follows 13th stepping cause your not doing what u r supposed to do...
"comfort is a mystery, crawlin out of my own skin"....... anyone who has experienced the horrors of opiate(actual drug, not tool album) withdrawal will understand this line all too well........awful,awful thing to experience
Thats not entirely true. Maynard and Billy have both stated that they would love to go back into the studio and record more songs for APC. They also stated that the songs most likely would be released only online either through Itunes or something else. I know me personally I would rather have them tour again and be able to see them live more so then having them release another Album. Seeing all these vids of their live shows make me really sad I never got a chance to see them live.
to the idiots debating the origin of the name 13th step, and the notion of drug use being discussed on this album: the album IS largely about drug abuse. a close friend of the band was going through this at the time of recording. (he died while they were on their first tour). the '13th step' is relapse.
this has to be one of the best live per...wait it's BETTER than the album version...something to do with the way that he presents his voice...more harmonic, and less destructive (until about 4:08 into the song...) great live recording of the song...
The inherent weakness that exists within the dependence of desire on the structural integrity of a personal relationship, of any kind. Give and take. Gain & loss and its endless cycle. Its a beautiful & painful reminder of this small truth, a first step on the long road to the slow acceptance of loss. Imo. Or it could be about a visit to the Sperm Back. Your choice.
well i dont watch live concerts on youtue too much, i think it ruins that awe u get when seeing bands live, it surprised me cuz the album sounds somewhat different, u no?
The album is very cooralistic to the the twelve step program...the first song in the album (in my opinion) he is speaking of his dope, whatever it may be, " Lie and smile to get what is mine." To then the second sond Weak and Powerless, this is the 1st step in the program. Also in the album he speaks of amends, resentments and Spiriutality. Very interesting...And the kicker is that 13th step, which isn't the program at all; it is to not focus on the twelve prior, and pick up women in the rooms
Dudes, the whole album is about drug addiction and the shite that goes with it. This song package is about getting your fix and how you dont want to associate with the junkies but you have to, and you will, and in any shape to get your fix.
sorry, soullessguy, i didn't see you in the corner weeping.....shhhh. recovrd1, i have to inform you that in this instance, you're mistaken. In the context that THIS band means in THIS case, is relapse. using 12 step programs to meet chicks? yeah, that's exactly what maynard was writing about. does that sound accurate? I'm citing first hand knowledge about the lyrical content, so lets just leave it at that for a while....
Absolutely my favorite song from these guys. BUT it's unfortunate that the crowd energy turned into a tempo increase for this performance...kind of killed that beautiful dark, brooding touch that completes this song.
President Andrew Jackson: 1829-1837 “You are a den of vipers! I intend to rout you out, and by the Eternal God I will rout you out. If the people only understood the rank injustice of our money and banking system, there would be a revolution before morning.”
Honestly you have to self interpret any song James has ever made. Who gives a fuck what other people have to say about it. This song touches me on another level. :)
It's about the depths that you will go to seek what you crave. How much of yourself will you let go of for this substance. It's written by only someone who truly knows what addiction is. This song gives me strenght to be stronger than the craving. No snow today.
I LOVE Maynard going nuts during the "mine" part... SO epic...
REALLY! hypnotizing. i fell out of my chair the other day drifting to this song. but even better... listen to this song on E and you will flip out hard core! lol
One of the best live performances ever !
this song has such a great impact that it kills my cravings. But it's impossible listening to it all day *_*
Saw them last night and am still reeling! Best concert I've been to in a long long time! Incredible, beautiful, amazing, awesome....
to me this song speaks of ambition and losing yourself to get what you want.
'time to feed the monster, i dont need another friend.'
sooo good.
Seeing them this Sunday! Going to blow my MIND!
the song that got me into apc(first song i heard) :D still luv it as much as the first time i heard it.
I Love this song! This whole album is perfect though, it has gotten me through some tough times.
I was listening to this song earlier today, it's all about the drums.

I"ve ben looking for the exact version FOREVER! THANK YOU!
APC is somehow a perfect armony for me, i feel so good listening package, judith, Orestes, the hollow... everytime im sad.
One word: Awesome.
Going to see APC for the first time in Aug!! Maynard is a fucking genius...
APC opened up for NIN back during NIN's "Fragility" tour. It was awesome.

just saw em in san diego two days ago. Vocals were awesome. I'm a huge perfect circle fan AND tool fan. in concert, it's gotta be Tool. Harmony and singing while driving down the freeway,.... it's all Perfect Circle.
the bass line is damn addictive

people, the WHOLE band is amazing ;)
100% TOTALLY without a doubt agree
legendary.
This is an amazing song - taps into pretty basic human behavior. How many times have we each been there?
B E A UTIFUL!!!
no longer a government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a government by the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men.”
That was a fucking fantastic vocal performance.
I love how MJK hides in the shadows when he sings...
I love this song & great CD (13th Step). I wonder if Maynard is in the back (and has for other performances)because of what he believes about words being of lesser importance than the music to a song. I think Maynard really is an amazing performer, he's a little odd and he makes you want to watch him.
listening to anything maynard, thom yorke or matt bellamy has done on e is amazing.

I was there too it was awesome at mizner park
I'll overdose on this song.
hm, i didnt wanna give u -1 :D
u pointed out the whider meaning of this song perfectly.
@MrTool86 Dude I've been waiting for the 6th since the minute they announced tour dates!
great fucking band. Thirteenth step album is so addictive, I love it
@paulv1973 He often does with APC, to try and distinguish between his Tool persona and A Perfect Circle persona.
@jimbobanalbeats yeah but there are rumors that they will play again the next year so we still have a chance!
WHAT!! u here the scream on that guy, i had no clue he could get that heavy, and im a big apc and tool fan, just goies to show u , u need to see a band live to rly know them

I went to this convert
maynard i loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeee yooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuu
GIVE THIS TO ME!!!
if you knew what you were talkin about u wouldnt think that. the entire cd is about dealing with addiction. go back and listen to it and there are interviews explaning it too
i think its their best song
sorry you didnt get what i meant... i like listening to those musicians while IM on e...not when they are on e. however i like listening to them fullstop.
@Tyranny82 absolutely
Is there a vocal playback ? He sings really well live. I love that band
I think this song is about greed or obsession. "Lie to get what I came for, lie to get just what I need." Possibly an addiction to drugs or something else where you use your "clever" and "tricky" to get it.
I love how Billy just busts into it at 4:09
@jimbobanalbeats : dude...MJK has been working on an album for both APC and Tool.
what josh freese does when the distortion kicks in totally shows off his ability with arrangements. he groups everything in three and adds an extra fill beat every four measures, it sounds so natural but keeps u off balance every time.
I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG> it give me chills everytime i hear it, the heavy part is a real AEnima/ Tool style groove, fucking sick as hell!
You're kind of preaching to the choir bro...I think most people that enjoy apc know it isnt JUST about maynard.

Much love to APC and MJK.
well said
@PuReNiRvANA1 eMOTIVe is Thirteenth Step has only one cover and that's "The Nurse Who Loved Me"
@mikeredsoxfan15 Gonna see them for the first time in 3 days in St. Paul! Fucking psyched!
@burkers this song does'nt sound like it about someone trying to get a fix, it sounds like someone trying to get a buttie call.
to the idiots debating the origin of the name 13th step, and the notion of drug use being discussed on this album:

@mikeredsoxfan15 same here. Aug 9th. you?

Where was this concert located? I'm trying to find footage of the Louisville Gardens show
man.. to not even be able to hear the base on this video record... shows just how nuts the base is lol.
@rayneroseren Aug 1st! 4 days away!
FUCK thats FUCKN awesome.
Most of the songs on this album if not all are about addiction.
@KVespaziani Exactly right, what this guy said :3
well i dont watch live concerts on youtue too much, i think it ruins that awe u get when seeing bands live, it surprised me cuz the album sounds somewhat different, u no?
Its so damn phat!
The album is very cooralistic to the the twelve step program...the first song in the album (in my opinion) he is speaking of his dope, whatever it may be, " Lie and smile to get what is mine."
To then the second sond Weak and Powerless, this is the 1st step in the program. Also in the album he speaks of amends, resentments and Spiriutality. Very interesting...And the kicker is that 13th step, which isn't the program at all; it is to not focus on the twelve prior, and pick up women in the rooms
@paulv1973 So it's even more fascinating to watch if he loses it during dancing like that. :D
billy and maynard = godly
Give this to me
The song is about manipulation and using people to get whatever you want, whether it's drugs, sex, or what have you. Great song.
Dudes, the whole album is about drug addiction and the shite that goes with it. This song package is about getting your fix and how you dont want to associate with the junkies but you have to, and you will, and in any shape to get your fix.
Mine mine mine! Yeah!!!
Love Maynard, It's so fucking hot!
You are new to music?
I developed some software in C# :)
probably because (from what ive observed) they used Db tuning so it's intentionally...sad somehow i can't describe it
sorry, soullessguy, i didn't see you in the corner weeping.....shhhh.

Is Maynard wearing a wig?
Are you all thumbs today?
Honestly you have to self interpret any song James has ever made. Who gives a fuck what other people have to say about it. This song touches me on another level. :)
what are you a critic?
well its not. i dont need drugs for it. at all. but youd be suprised how much drugs can enhance the thought process and musical experience.
most of maynards songs are so long
As far as I remember taste is always just an opinion. Seems like you don't know that yet.
