- Our plan had been to head elsewhere, but when I realised that it was the 10th birthday at one of my all-time favourite parkruns then we couldn't stay away!
As always, this parkrun didn't disappoint. Running in such a stunning setting always feels like a blessing. This incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site is such a brilliant place for a parkrun, and it really shows off the fantastic relationship that parkrun has with the National Trust.
If you've not visited yet, then you're going to want to add Fountains Abbey parkrun to your list!
Huge thanks to everyone involved in bringing us this incredible parkrun over the past 10 years. It really is something to be proud of.

I saved my 100th Parkrun for Fountains Abbey. I came from Vancouver and to date, this is the most beautiful Parkrun. Slow time, but I stopped to take pictures. The small bridge is the best place for that. No railing, but the water is shallow
You'd have missed out if you didn't stop to take pictures 😍 It's absolutely breathtaking isn't it?! An awesome place to do your 100th! 😃
What a flippin super duper video it is. Love awesome video
Thanks Andy, it's such an awesome place 😍😍😍
Note for Poppy "Always double-lace when its parkrace!" Great video, thank you for sharing.
This made me laugh loads 🤣🤣🤣
What a stunning location ! Thanks for the vid
It's my second favourite parkrun in the world! Number 1 is Bere Island 😍😍😍
o wow loved watching this one what a lovely place
Definitely one of my favourites 😍
Another amazing location.
As a viewer the weather conditions really suited the drama of the location.
An inspirational video actually. Next week I have to drive my son to Aberystwyth (2nd year at Uni).
It’s actually 150th Aspatria park run. I didn’t run the first but we were there as a family! It’s only small but it’s brilliant community. On viewing this I have to be there!
Wonderful video
Thank you so much for such a lovely comment 🙏🏼 Good luck to your son for his second year 😃
I saw you filming when I was stood at the start line. Thanks for uploading!
That means you must be super speedy! I hope you had a great 10th birthday run 😃
Yeah, saw you at the start as I arrived just in time for the briefing and you to explain Poppy's cold is neverending; in our house always has some medicinal chicken noodle soup available to treat such ailments. Poppy may not have felt up to running, but if you watch carefully you can see how much she loves spending time with her mother.
For me the parkrun is currently part of my weekly speed workouts so didn't have time while zooming past the sites to appreciate them. As I've visited many times I'll be okay or I'll simply watch your video too see the sights.
This week a heavily inked Vegan Runner raced me to the finish, she just had more at the end. I lost but her and I laughed about once I caught my breath. The huge crowd was a friendly and happy bunch even with the overcast weather. 'Til next time...
Well done, sounds like you had an awesome run! It was a busy one wasn't it?! Awwww my girl, I'm so happy Poppy chose to keep going as you're right, it's great quality time, I think she was just pressuring herself to go faster than she should while ill. I'm really pleased she still did it 🥰
Oh and I'm still looking for the vegetarian alternative to chicken soup when ill! 🙃
Great piece Nicola, and good to see you in the café to share the yummy cake! 😊
The cake was DELICIOUS! 😋🤤 Great to see you and thanks so much for your involvement in Fountains Abbey over the years 🤗
It's a gorjusssssss looking parkrun ❤ the dog sounds at the start would have been very difficult for me to deal with ( for some reason it's a sound I find incredibly disturbing) but live and let live.. I know for many people it's really soothing to have their dog with them so I do get it xx poor pops does look a shade paler but all that fresh air is GOOD XXX you have helped me this morning, I have a goal pace repeat run this morning (gulppp) so heading for Weymouth esplanade as its flat but the weather is a tad off putting so watching this has definitely put my smile on 🎉
Awww thank you 🤗 I hope you have a great run 😃 I'm with you on the dog noise, it's hard to cope with but it's cute that the dogs are excited 🥰
@@NicolaRuns I had a very tough but fab session... Speedwork definately hits the spot (and I had a dark chocolate early Easter egg to help me recover 😂)
@@emmarunyeard6832 it would be rude not to! 😉
Oh how poignant, memories are so precious yet so emotional sometimes ❤
Oh for sure ❤️ It definitely hit me in the feels ❤️❤️❤️
Love Fountains Abbey! So many great viewpoints to explore and the animation of Novice the monk in the watermill always makes me smile.
It's an incredible place isn't it?! I feel so lucky that we get to parkrun here! 😍
You've just inspired me to renew my lapsed NT membership Nicola . I've a holiday in N.Yorks at the end of May and this is now going to be my chosen PR.
That's awesome! You'll love it! Let me know how you get on 😍
We were there too - a very atmospheric 10th birthday wasn't it. And very poignant for you too Nicola, thanks for the video.
By atmospheric do you mean wet?! 😜🤣 The mist was actually very atmospheric, I could have done with less rain though! I wouldn't have missed it though, it's definitely one of my favourites 😍
I love fountain’s Abbey such a beautiful parkrun. Your videos are the best and I always enjoy them
Thanks so much, I always love your positivity 😃
Well done on a yucky day , nice to see you smiling , im sure Ben is smiling down on you , keep going 😊
Thanks for your lovely and touching comments as always 🤗🤗🤗
Wow. I looked up that Abbey online to learn more about it. Definitely very old. Sort of reminded me of the ruins in St Andrews. That park run looked so pretty too. You have to wonder how many people over the centuries have walked those grounds. We don't have that much very old old type of stuff like that here in the US. So it is always cool to see different things. That run also looked really crowded. It looked like it would be pretty hard to really race it.
Thanks for sharing the journey with us and the poignant memories at the end. I look forward to your weekly content and the virtual tour of England. Maybe one day I'll make it back there. I want to see Port Isaac where Doc Martin was filmed. Hope Poppy feels better. Definitely has been sold colds and bugs going around
Thanks so much 🤗 I remember going to see castles in Canada and them being really new 🤣 yes Fountains Abbey is amazing and the history is super interesting! There's a few National Trust videos on UA-cam which are fascinating 😃
You need to try Sewerby parkrun Nicola, often called one of the best!
I ran it when I was pregnant with Poppy 😍😍😍
I thought the flow of runners crossing the start line would never stop!
Me too! 🤣 It was a busy one for sure! Second highest attendance 🏃♀️
This parkrun is on my bucket list
It definitely should be, it's awesome 😎💯
Love Fountains Abbey parkrun. Partly because it's a lovely parkrun, partly because it's a wonderful NT property but mainly because I was brought up on horror films like The Omen (don't ask!!) and Fountains Abbey was the filming location for when the anti-Christ is finally killed in The Omen 3. It's a weirdly emotional parkrun for me because my mum would have loved to visit. Anyway, keeping it light... haha... congrats to them on their birthday.
Oh my goodness you're braver than me! I can't watch scary things 🙈😳
What a beautiful venue for parkrun. That is some compensation for the wet conditions. So different from my parkrun experience this week. Here in South Australia the forecast was for a max. temperature of 40°C and it was over 30°C a half hour before the start.
Oh my goodness that's nuts! I remember running St Peters in a heatwave and it was SO hard to get up those hills! I don't know how you guys do it all the time! 😳
Hi Nicola, I recently discovered your content after you were mentioned on a 'parkrun news'... loving your content. Just wondering if you ever do reviews of 'junior parkruns'. My kids go to the local junior one and they love it and have made lots of friends - would be fun to see what the other ones are like (we go to Saltaire Junior parkrun)
Thanks 🤗 I think that while parkrun occurs in a public space and there are children filmed I think I'd feel more uncomfortable filming a junior event. It's possible you'd end up filming kids in care who shouldn't be on social media etc and I think lots of parents might not want their kids filmed, or... Wouldn't mind them being filmed but might get annoyed that I'd not asked permission so for those reasons I never film junior events. It feels too much like a minefield! 🙃 I wasn't aware I'd been mentioned anywhere, that's nice - where was that? 😊
@@NicolaRuns Thanks for explaining, that makes perfect sense! It was the Boston park run news during Halloween that you were mentioned (event #348), I was very late reading it!! My pic is in it with my two kids wearing Halloween masks. I tried posting the url but my comment got deleted, I guess YT dont allow external URL's. Keep up the fun videos and keep on smiling ❤
@@yasinmustafa8287 awww that was a great event! There was better fancy dress than parkrunning in Whitby at Halloween! 😃😃😃
Great video Nicola, I'm not sure why birthday fancy dress brought up grass skirts, but hey ho 😂 Loviing the advice to hide in the dark tunnel in order to scare passing children - what other Parkrun blogs are giving that level of detail?
😂😂😂 I don't know either 🤷🏻♀️🤣 lol yes hiding in the tunnel is a must 😂😃
For a NT parkrun, try Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire. Lovely cafe afterwards, and you are not kicked out afterwards.
Couldn't agree more, I loved Clumber Park 😍😍😍
Surprised that 5.6% (33) of the runners/walkers didn't have their times recorded and were listed as 'unknown'! It's not difficult to remember your barcode - and as most people always have their phone with them, it's on the 5K app (as you know)
Wow that is pretty high! I guess for a birthday then people might bring along family members who couldn't care less 🤣 the other thing is that there is zero signal at the abbey, it's a total blackspot so you couldn't look it up on your phone if you didn't have a screenshot of it so I imagine that's it for a few people, you certainly couldn't register a new person 🙃
@@NicolaRuns that’s good to know about the black spot. I always have a printed copy and a screenshot of my code, so I should be ok when I eventually visit there 🏃
@@NicolaRuns It could also be a 'protest' at the stats being removed. I've just been reading some of the comments on the parkrun FB page, and it appears that some runners are still running but not having their barcodes scanned so that they purposely appear as 'unknown' on the results page (which, in my opinion, does seem a little petty and pointless - but what do I know!)
@@FrugalMrB yes you definitely always need a spare! Mine is on my watch but I have a screenshot on my phone in case and physical ones in the car 😃
@@FrugalMrB I think this would be cutting off your nose to spite your face! It's a protest that only hurts the runner themselves! 🤦🏻♀️
Great vid. I'd like to mention a potential sensitive subject but I've wondered about this for a while and it's still a puzzle to me. I've done over 30 park runs here in the Midlands and I don't think I've seen one non-white person running. It's really weird. Anyone else noticed this?
I think running, much in the same way to cycling and other sports, has to fight the issue of historically being predominantly a white, middle-class, male sport. I think parkrun does do things to try to combat this but also ~82% of the UK is white, and in some regions this will be a lot higher. So I think there's two things. I think it depends on where you are geographically, but also I do think there is still a lot of work to do in terms of equality on the start line in terms of race and gender, in so, so many sports. Definitely not just running. I think parkrun is helping to break these barriers IMO ☺️
@@NicolaRuns Yes it certainly seems to be not just predominantly white but almost totally white from my experience with lots of (white) women well represented. I'm a white middle class male but I live and run very close to large black and asian areas but don't see any at park runs, although I do see some running on the street. Maybe they feel intimidated by all the park run whiteys 😁 It's a strange one. Anyway, hopefully through time we'll see this change.
Poor Poppy, she has struggled for past couple of months.
I don't think I will take your advice to go in the dark tunnel and jump out at passing kids.....don't want to get arrested 😮
This made me laugh so much 🤣🤣🤣 Fair enough, but you're missing out 😂
