5:51 - Did I hear Ronald Regan?
I think the crosstalk actually enhances the burping Ronald Reagan tape.
It did . the 4 track tape may been very early podcast
The Scared Sexless parental advisory-into-Anti-Diarrheal advert at 38:36 is art
Can confirm the local news is 4/15/1987.
Per the NWS Buffalo NY, the record low of 18 from 4/15/1904 in Rochester stills stands today.
SLEDGE HAMMER! man I used to love that show.
Quality content like this is the reason I support Oddity Archive on Patreon 😀
I’ve watched this multiple times since he posted this- and I usually watch the minisodes once (discovision dead sides are another exception). I enjoyed this a lot!
Highlights of this episode for me:
- The audio recording of Ronald Reagan belching his way through a press conference
- Hearing "Soul Limbo" by Booker T and the MG's during the Dave trailer. That's the BBC cricket theme tune, but everyone knows that...
- I'm probably going to have nightmares about Sally Jesse Raphael and Phil Donahue being the same person
- I remember watching that Superman 50th Anniversary special, from the humongous DVD set of the Christopher Reeve era, in particular that trailer-trash mom trying to tell her kid to lift that Chevy Nova. Now, if it was a Vauxhall Nova...
- Yes, there was such a thing as microwave sausages. Wall's used to make them over here; in fact, I believe they still do. Oh boy...
- Why would anyone want to remake Roman Holiday? Especially with Tom Conti in it?
- The "Scared Sexless" special presentation seemingly sponsored by an anti-diarrhoea treatment was the absolute icing on the cake.
At 18:25, that's John Mahoney (aka Frasier's dad Marty Crane) in the Miracle Ear spot. Fun fact: the person who directed the Sally Jessy Raphael show was Kit Carson, former longtime director of Rush Limbaugh's radio and TV programs.
As soon as I saw him I said "hey, that's the dad from say anything and frazier."
Right before 27 minutes in was a car commercial and there was a fine print at the bottom. Those are usually dates for expiring offers which can help pinpoint a tape's approx date. I always look for car commercials if nothing else is helping. Maybe you already knew that. You got lucky with the Peter Jennings 1987 ABC News teaser giving you the precise date.
That cooking bit was "Mr. Food", a syndicated cooking segment. Used to air all over the place.. his catchphrase was "Ooh it's so good" which you hear him say here. Mr. Food also had a catering company chain up until the 2000s.
I saw Steven Wright on an episode of Oddity Archive. It was odd... so I archived it.
Wow. For old tapes, that's a really clean picture.
I've had tapes from 1979 and 1982 that were of fantastic quality. If a tape is well made and stored well, it's certainly possible to get a good result even if it is old. I think the professional digitisation may have given it a better output than my setup could have done.
Rochester NY native here. In 1989 WROC switched from being an NBC affiliate to CBS. NBC was previously on WHEC so the two networks traded affiliates.
searching through these tapes feels like an archeological dig. also ironic how scorned ads are in the present day but how precious they become over time
Kenneth Copeland is one of those televangelists that even to this day is mostly about money.
That cooking segment you had on that tape is Mr. Food. My local NBC affiliate, WITN in Greenville, NC, used to carry his segments during the noon news. "Ooh, it's so good."
Hearing "Soul Limbo" outside of the context of the BBC's Cricket coverage is amazingly jarring!
That EP footage really looks good!
15:30 is the promo to the original “Parent Trap” which was part of the “Disney Sunday Movie” which was an edited version recorded off of TV. I do have the VHS of the “Parent Trap” which is the original uncut version, not an off-air recording. The opening and closing sequence were intact, but this airing had the opening and closing sequences removed. It was done in stop-motion animation.
They had a 2 hour time slot and The Parent Trap runs 128 minutes, so not just the opening and closing were cut but several other scenes too. And in a bit of a blunder for those kids like me who had never seen the first movie, ABC and Disney showed the original Parent Trap over two months after they ran Parent Trap II

Ben, I can verify that the Superman anniversary special was indeed aired on February 29, 1988. I know this for a fact and I also know that the live bits done outside the Superman celebration were filmed on February 1, 1988. I know this because I am in the crowd. It was filmed at what was then the New York Colosseum on Columbus Circle. I worked next-door, came out at the end of the day, saw the marquee that said “Welcome Superman”, wandered over and asked what was going on and when someone with a clipboard asked me if I was in an acting union and I said no, they said stand here. For the next five hours, I stood in the background and made my way on camera a couple of times.
I have to say, I think the version on the DVD of Superman II, which I have, has a slightly different edit than what originally aired. I only say that because I think some of my appearance was cut out on the DVD. Now I have to try and find my copy. if you do decide to digitize this hour, I would love to know where I can get access to a copy of it. Thanks for all the good work.
34:50 Oh damn, a real live appearance of Satan himself, captured on VHS. That's terrifying.
History on a video tape. A time capsule to the past. Thanks Ben to a view of what was.
Darn, I really wanted to see the tractor pull commercial.
23:56- omg I remember Mr. Food!
They used to air this on WWNY in Watertown too! I remember when he died and I was very sad
Oooh, it's so good!
I used to see this guy on TV all the time in local US TV... I don't exactly remember but it might've been a segment in our nightly news? Mom used to watch them and I remember the OOH IT'S SO GOOD bit a lot. And some of the stuff that aired in those segments stuck with me.
@@foxhack5011 I remember it too but it was always on local news segments. It was on our CBS affiliate in Southern IL (KFVS 12). His catchphrase lives rent free in my mind
He was on ch 7 in Chicago.
From a look in the archives of the Democrat and Chronicle (which is Rochester's daily paper and was once also the headquarters of its owner, newspaper giant Gannett), it would appear that _Donahue_ aired at 9:00 on WOKR-TV then; the 12:30 slot on the station was given to the ABC soap opera _Loving._
I always look forwards to these videos on Thursdays. Plus, today being my birthday makes it even better. Keep up the great work Ben, hope your day is great as well as having a great rest of your week and a great weekend. Take care!
Happy birthday!
@@OddityArchive thank you very much Ben!
19:15 - The entire Cold War explained in 16 seconds.
Repeat decades later
I remember in the 2000s Pizza Hut started giving out DVDs with meal deals. They were usually those ones that were like a set of three or five movies in one DVD case.
I've seen those around at thrift stores. I've only seen them come in those cardboard sleeves like PS1 demo discs and with one movie per disc.
35:53 Ooh, Lauer's! The best furniture store that I never got the chance to shop in.
These kinds of episodes looking through old tapes are awesome even if those who recorded these cut out most of the breaks, a cardinal sin if I do say so myself.
Mr. Food was on WABC's news in New York. The edit/cut at the end of that segment always happened after his "Oh it's so good!"
That CHEF is Mr FOOD, usually given to local affiliates to run in their newscasts.
23:42: Jeff Smith of The Frugal Gourmet
The show's run ended unceremoniously...
23:00 Mr. Food. "Oh, its so good."
That Superman's 50th anniversary special is really weird as it works under the assumption that Superman actually exists (hopefully they were just doing it for fun and not just so they wouldnt have to mention siegel and shuster).
Lorne Michaels and the then current cast of Saturday Night Live put it together.
The CBS Spirit oh yeah! theme for the network started in '86 with share the spirit, thru about 89.
20:21 Ah yes, WOKR. A part of my childhood that I thought will never resurface.
I loved this episode right up my alley
30:44 "Drugs Say No"? If your drugs are talking to you, you may have a problem.
43:10 Seven Nightly News!
I looked through a garbage bag full of my late brother's home recordings, he liked to tape the news, I hate the news, I will confess most all of the tapes wound up in the landfill.
Mr food was actually nationally syndicated. I remember watching him on the knoxville tennessee channels when I was young. Also, I remember the mcdonalds video tape thing cuz my mom worked at mcdonalds. For some reason the only tape she bought me was Ghost. I still don't know why. Lol.
That Reagan bit on the reel could be from the 1984 presidential campaign, since he mentions "Miss [Geraldine] Ferraro" - Walter Mondale's VP choice.
She was a US Rep from NY 1979-1985.
27:19 I have tried to explain to my kid what a big deal it was in my childhood to see the CBS Special Presentation bumper. I think something is lost in translation.
@36:37 a real belt and suspenders guy!
35:18 Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!
Alf stands for Alien Life Form. His real name is Gordon Shumway. I'm the only one in this comment section to know this.
Come on Home - to NBC was the musical sting on that NBC Special tag line puts it in the 86-89 era. (on the Scared Sexless). LOCAL advertisers probably wanted NOTHING to do with that.
Interesting behind-the-scenes look at Archive HQ. Maybe the genesis of an OA New Year's episode there? Regarding LP mode, I don't think any VCR was optimized for LP search, or if any were, they were very few. From what I've read, RCA insisted that JVC add the 4 hour LP speed to VHS for RCA's first VHS VCR; JVC's later models added the 6 hour EP speed (which LP-having decks then called SLP). So from early on, those who wanted economy used EP/SLP, and those who wanted quality used SP, and LP was a vestigial leftover, with many VCRs only supporting LP playback, not record, and forget about optimized-for-LP picture search. My family's first VCR, pre-dating on-screen display, only recorded and had indicators in its vacuum fluorescent display for SP and EP. When playing an LP tape, neither was lit, leaving the speed indicator area blank. It felt like unlocking a secret mode.
I had a g e vhs that could do that but was a 2 head unit, saddly it died do to 2 transistors that by 99 (it was an 87) were very hard to get.
I can confirm that Tape #1 with NBC's "Moment Of Truth" special aired on April 28, 1993, while the Knots Landing aired on CBS a few weeks later on May 13, 1993.
Indeed, Tape #3's clip of Superman's 50th aired on February 29, 1988 at 8 p.m. So I'm very sure that ABC World News Tonight's broadcast with the clip of Nancy Reagan aired either on the same day or the following day.
The Roman Holiday special in Tape #4 aired on December 28, 1987, two days before the Scared Sexless special and three days before both WNT and WOKR's newscast involving the death of '87.
Did Barney Gumble record that first tape lol? *Burrrrp.*
Awesome video OddityArchieve I love collecting prerecorded blank VHS tapes from ebay I'm hoping to do a new UA-cam series called Vinnie's mystery tape show someday soon.
dude I have bins of mystery tapes I've been going through the past 10 years LOL - I find them in electronics recycling bins people throw them out along with their old gear. I rarely find 'porn' .. and that's fine with me.
25:35: when does Geraldo Rivera finish his clown makeup?
In the Miracle Ear as during the Sally segment, Was hat Frasier's dad?
Ooh, I want to send you tapes now.
Great video I do miss the good old days of television. It's all politics these days.
29:08 Oh dear - I hope nobody nowadays looks up what Gerard Jones was actually up to...
Also sure it was him who fridge a woman in a 90's Green Lantern comic.
Nor the reason why The Frugal Gourmet was cancelled.
My mom bought the first Land Before Time from Mcdonalds
Jimmy Dean's microwaved sausages!?!?! sounds vile
17:00 mr show's inspiration for 'indomitable spirit' :/
[plz know that's the jerk in me trying to make connections. much l*ve etc]
Left channel of the reel to reel sounds like Ronald Reagan.
It is. Seemingly discussing the '84 election.
Ben A. Hana
29:10 Gerard Jones later went to prison for pedo stuff.
[Reads Wikipedia article]
😨
🧐
Amanda "Married ... With Children" Bearse at 20:26 (Azteca taco shell commercial)?
Actually, it's Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve. I still watch it every year. I just have to grin and bear it with Ryan Seacrest at the helm. Not a big fan of Ryan Seacrest.
But who won Miss USA???
Courtney Gibbs (who I've never heard of outside of that tape).
Given the year- you could bet that Texas was going to win. Texas had a huge winning streak in the mid-late 80s.
@@sracine10 as a native Texan child of the 80s I can concur this. I have memories of my dad’s quippy remarks that have no place in 2024 while watching these
not much here Benny Boy
So, I need to be more like the other channels that look at mystery tapes? Ya know, by pre-screening them and just feign a reaction.
Left wing negative land? Oof. I figured someone just recorded over something boring.
Not a great commentary though.
Dude the timer on the screen as well as the voice over commentary is really unnecessary.
Just post the videos with titles and list of commercials in the comments section. And please don't fast forward the tape that is unnecessary as well.
Other than that I enjoy watching classic content
Every last point you bring up was addressed in the video (in some cases, repeatedly).
