I like how the father is seen as evil for not being there for her but was sent off to war for years witch is normal in high society for old age nobility especially if the family is a soldier style house name and he did try to get her mom it's just image of the family would have dropped if he did so and the family heads didn't like that and sent him to the battlefield at least he came back some don't and he sees her and is doing shadow fathering to help her even if it's to his detriment
Ra clan was not a military clan. They're wealthy noble clan. It's when Rakan and the Emperor taking the clan forcefully, he transform it into mighty military clan.

and lakan is her father. in teh final episode he realises his mistake and buys out her mother knowning she hasn't got much time left as she was the only women who could challenge him at go/chess. but he left with the military and she sold herself on the street out of spite getting syphilis which is eating her brain, hence why she is in the annex. her adopted father was to late to stop it before the infection took full hold.
@@gregorturner9421Not exactly. The military campaign took a lot longer than anticipated. Maomao’s mother was the best high-class courtesan with highest earnings at that time. Buying her would be nothing short of impossible. The only way for a courtesan to destroy her career is to get pregnant, which is also nigh impossible unless intentional. So they planned her pregnancy to cut down her value as it would be much easier for Rakan, who wasn’t very wealthy, to buy her out.
Alas, Rakan didn’t show up. Thats the reason why she got demoted to a common courtesan, had to service a lot of common customers, and got syphilis in the process.
This storyline is my favorite arc in the manga.

I noticed that too after all he was the one who talked to the medicine girl and the one who talked to Jinshi I figure his plan is to kill Jinshi so he can buy her out since she would have no where else to go
First of all, it was not Lakan who planned any of this.
First off, if he was behind all this, he never would have gotten Jinshi to look into the blacksmith's family issue, which was the final piece that possessed MaoMao to run all the way to the place the ceremony was taking place.
Secondly, he also wouldn't have stood up for MaoMao and aided her in entering said building to save Jinshi's life...
Lakan purposely did these things knowing someone was attempting to kill someone of royal blood. It is also probably the reason the Suiren (the one who was inadvertently found guilty of participating in this attempted assassination) was being kept close to Lakan. Odds are Lakan knew she was actively part of the assassination attempt.

If he had played a part in it, he would have no need to put maomao on the path that allowed her to figure it out and prevent it.

Maomao didn't know who her bio father was. When she found out, she was unhappy and didn't care to reconnect bc she blamed him for leaving her mother at the brothel place when he promised the mother to buy her out.

He did mean to buy her mother, his lover, out of the brothel but his family disapproved him taking in a red district lady and forced him to be out in war, prolonging his return. When he eventually came back, he was told by granny he cannot see his lover and lied that she's no longer here.
Bc when he was not there on time, other suiters wanted her and she was violated and contracted STD. Her value plummeted, so she's seen as worthless. Her disease lowered her quality of life, that's why she was at the annex. Still kept in the brothel house for treatment and care but away from customers.
Later with Maomao,
He can't see faces, but he could see Maomao's face. He's a smart guy that he put 2 together and that Maomao must be related to his lover and probably did his own investigation and concluded that Maomao is the daughter of his lover. That's why he's supporting Maomao like this with his influence to hopefully be closer to her.
where did you get this plot? because in the anime it's like this. Lakan and Fengxian had mutual feeling. Fengxian's popularity was going through the roof and Lakan didn't see any chance for him to buy her. in their usual game they finally did the deed. I'm pretty sure she hasn't taken customer at that time, she only took customer to play go and chess. at the same time Lakan's father told him to study abroad. he thought it'd be just for a couple months but it took him 3 years. Lakan knew that Fengxian buyout was failed but somehow he didn't realize that it was his fault. Fengxian's pride and popularity plummeted, nobody wanted to buy her, and because Lakan was gone for 3 years, she had to take customers like a street prostitute just to survive. that's how she contracted STD. when Lakan return after 3 years, he finally realized how stupid he was for not noticing earlier.
I'm pretty sure Maomao and Lakan knew each other's existence, they are both pretty smart tbh. it's just she didn't want to acknowledge him, and he probably still feels guilty. that's why the scene in this clip is a bridge for their relationship. he saved her, and she can finally try to face him.
The family did disapprove, but he didn’t care he was going to buy her out anyway, however just before he could he got called to lead what was supposed to be a 2 week campaign that ended up lasting 3 years. He thought he was going to come back in two weeks and buy out the woman he loved and raise their daughter together. When the campaign continued they never sent his mail to the battlefield it went to his office in the palace, so he never got the mother’s letters and she thought he’d abandoned her and their child. When he got back and saw the letter with the tip of his daughters finger he freaked out and rushed over which is when he saw Maomao with his Uncle. To Maomao he was a scary stranger and even after learning the truth his constant attempts to be a part of her life and buy her out came across as creepy to Maomao so she ended up hating him and wanting nothing to do with him or her mother

This was weirdly familiar to me. Except instead of my mom not understanding my dad's humor, it's parts of the internet not understanding Dylan. It puts "child of the internet" into a whole new perspective for me.

Probably nothing, Lakan is face blind, if he wasn’t punished in that exact moment, which the shock of her saving Jinshi would’ve been pretty distracting, he probably wouldn’t have been able to track down that guard again.
I thought Jinshi had that other guy punish the guard later. Of course hes gunna find out how his maomao got hurt and punish everyone.

She pays him back by giving the most beautiful yet tragic ending to a love story
I started watching this anime because my girlfriend wanted me to watch something of her own taste (we almost always watch things I recommend cause she's also into series and movies I like, but there's a side of her likes that I don't really enjoy, such as doramas and some anime series that are not my cup of tea). At first it was okay, but what catches you and is actually pretty unique is the protagonist. Maomao is one hell of a protagonist, no fan service or stuff like that yet she's an amazing girl and the best that the show has. The plot seems wacky at the beginning, but Maomao makes it interesting and pretty soon the plot itself turns very interesting, it was truly a surprise, a really enjoyable one.
Don't know how far the anime got adapted but the finds his wife and marries her in the grandest way possible 🎉🎉

Fun fact: Her father, Han Luohan is the Chief Of Staff of the Royal Army, answers only to his Majesty himself.
After the guard stroke Maomao, Luohan has him demoted and reassigned him to the border patrol unit in the desert area, it's about the worst position you want to be at that point.
But, somehow the former guard has done a pretty neat job and Luohan promoted him😅, that man was incredibly grateful, even sworn allegiance to Luohan personally, which is a big NO NO since serving officers could only be loyal to the emperor.😂

She doesn't hate him but she doesn't love him either she's somewhat neutral to him but because of her being afraid of him when she was little that "he did not mean too be" 😂 but that first encounter kind of traumatized her. And he's very persistent doting(?) father after wards in which she's infuriated at times. The only thing why she's angry at him because, she knew he can settle that "certain" circumstances that she could have attain such good "knowledge" but he did not meddle to which to her annoyance that turns into anger.
