5:11 What works is the thing I've been harping on for years: Consumables suck, "refillable containers" are king. You've infinite uses of the spells as long as you can spare the spirit and aren't limit locked, so you're encouraged to used them instead of being discouraged by scarcity and hoarding syndrome.
The deflect system almost reminds me a lot (in feel) of the parry in Ghost of Tsushima, when you pull it off consecutively (especially on bosses) you just feel so bad ass knocking a monster or big bad guys combo down to nothing and just turning the momentum around on them and ending with a big attack. This game really rewards you for learning movesets of your enemies and it makes getting your ass kicked feel a little more forgivable because of how awesome you feel.
Don't compare this trash to ghost lol ghost had a block/parry button this game has its parry tied to the dodge which will lead you to dodging instead of parrying and getting hit plus there's a major issue currently where the frame rates directly affect the speed of the games so any stutters or non consistent frames keeps the attacks constantly changing on there timing which makes it just annoying when you parry every attack of a combo one time the miss them completely the next time doing the same exact thing.
@@Thiccness_Is_Delicious it’s tied to the same button yeah but one tap is a parry and two taps is a dodge. After playing the game for a good bit I absolutely love it and for those who found the first boss to be a wall. I recommend just luring him into the corner near the cliff and face hugging in phase 1, it's super easy to just dodge/counter every critical attack as its heavily telegraphed and his basic attacks have a small wind up as well. I’m not sure how I feel about this morale system. It sounds interesting, but when I’m struggling with a boss or farming one, I don’t like being forced to grind the map just to not be at a disadvantage. I’m guessing they didn’t like people running past enemies on a map just to get to the boss. This is a bit of an incentive to fight through the mobs.
Been playing for about 4 hours and I am loving it! I love how you could just parry everything, from fire bombs, arrow shot at you or even any kind of spell the boss throws at you lol.

It took me a few attempts but he's not as bad as you'd think at first. He's quite manageable if you can keep hitting him and overwhelm and then deflect when he does hit
The setting is the Three Kingdoms Romance, same as Dynasty Warriors. My first run through the demo I quit when I found out the first boss has a second form. Then I replayed and found out I could block and parry while blocking. Wrecked that boss with no sweat. It's fun.
Everyone says that but if a game looks like shit it takes away from the game. People have this strange view that graphics don't mean anything. Growing up with 4 bit games, graphics are as important as mechanics. You need both to make a good to great game
@@trvpmusic2569 To each their own. Personally, I think that in Nioh the combat system is much better. Different fighting stances with many tricks make the game dynamic and interesting. The same tricks in wo long quickly get bored
Definitely influenced by Nioh 1 & 2 a LOT. Some of the enemies used are similar if not same. Even their animations. Kinda reminds me of how Elden Ring is basically the sum of all of From Software's current catalogue.
After Elden Ring, I think I am done with Souls-Borne games. I find them too tedious, personally. I don't have the kind of free time to get gud. I am glad that people get the kind of games they like though.
Super fun game but it feels a bit like a step back from Nioh 2. Nioh 2 was IMO Team Ninja's best game. Filled with content, amazing artstyle, level design massivly improved over the first game and HUGE build variety.. ...Wo Long tho feels like a budget version of that. Levels are WAY smaller and boring, artstyle is not as strong, build variety is there but it's less compeling... Overall I do hope we gonna get a sequel but for now, after finishing it, instead of going into NG+ I... installed Nioh 2 again.
Absolutely loved this game and was a bit sad it fell under the radar since 2023 was so stacked. Despite the flaws it has some of the most satisfying and crisp combat I've ever experienced. I actually preferred the combat here over Nioh 1 and 2 despite me loving those as well.
I love love love Nioh and Nioh 2! I also enjoyed Sekeiro but found it too hard. Will defo buy this! Quite excited to play this. Seems like a good mixture of both. I’m not too bothered by the lack of event variety. I even like their story telling. Yeah it’s a bit .. cringy, but I’m a sucker for it ahaha..
@Astra Inclinant thing is, it worked for me for the most part, but the fucking apes .. the god damn apes ..!! Tbh there were 4 bosses that gave me too hard a time. Otherwise I found it great.
I like the genre but def not a super fan.. They all kinda play the same imo I still may check it out at some point.. I love Team Ninja & everything they put out is of stirring quality.. Albeit very challenging most of the time
I kind of agree with the dodge point. I thought I was the only one feeling like it's lackluster. I haven't been able to pull one off without getting hit yet, and am starting to wonder whether or not it has I-frames in it. Kind of wondering the point if the parry is better to begin with and does more for you.
I wonder how much of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms is in this game? As a Shin Sangoku Musou(Dynasty Warriors) & Soulsborne fan, I have been a bit excited to play this.
It's absolutely spectacular. They do need to do a better job of explaining specific effects pertaining to those that can be placed on armor and weapons. Like what they are for, what they do. Some are pretty self-explanatory, but others aren't gonna make much sense to a lot of people.
I DONT believe they should actually. I think thats the point. That steep difficulty curve is a norm. Bum rushing isnt going to help so try to compose yourself and spend a few deaths learning the attack patterns. Youll definitely get it down.
As a freelance artist myself, I really think this looks good graphically and in terms of artistic direction. But I guess that's just me being a guy that prefers games that run well and play well over games that overdo fidelity. We've come to a point in the gaming industry where I've come to appreciate a ton of retro games more so than hyper-realistic, photogrammetry type ones.
@@HighLanderPonyYT , oh, of course, I'm not merely talking about this game alone. That's definitely a bad sign when a game looks dated while also stuttering and lagging behind. I guess I'm simply pointing out that I'm not exactly annoyed by its overall art direction. If they can fix and smoothen out the frame rate and gameplay with quick patches, I think that'll do the trick. So, you definitely have a solid point there.
Another amazing review, This is the first time I bought a game before I watched your before you buy videos, as I had played the demo and had so much fun even though I got my butt handed to me lol
I'm not really a Souls fan, but the way this is presented - as more of a Souls-lite experience - I think I can definitely get behind. I loved Jedi: Fallen Order so if this is similar to that (or even a tad bit tougher) then I think it will be right up my alley.
I bought the game after enjoying the gameplay a whole lot in the demo. So I agree with your shoutout to bring back demos. For me I only bought it because of the demo.
Why? They didn't pay these guys or anything. Team Ninja are og and legit man. They reached their peak years ago. Now they just riding and giving us a challenge to defeat still with each game. Can they evolve from here? Probably not anymore but hey. They still give us something to accomplish right.
If you enjoyed Sekiro or souls born game but want a faster paced combat experience. Wo Long is a good game for that. Idk if you ever seen the Ninja Gaiden games or Dynasty Warrior games but this game is that but more Sekiro formula.
You make the game look AWESOME. I was on the fence about the game, but now I know that there is no way I am going to even try this game! Whatever the opposite of fire is, that's what I am when it comes to Souls-like gameplay.
I first played the game at the Tokyo Game Show September last year and I thought it was amazing. Lots of fun. The combat is definitely the star of the show.
Great video! Can I make a suggestion? When you’re talking about different weapons, magic, etc. can you highlight what you are talking about in the video? IE, when discussing different spells, show us some of the spells
I like how Tecmo put Zhang Liang right in the beginning of the demo. It's almost as if they're saying to potential customers: Listen, this dude is the "Skill Check Boss if you purposely don't use the Dragon Summon" if you can't get past him, don't buy the game//
I will be real here, the gameplay isn't really all of that. It could had been more flashy instead of it being somewhat underwhelming. Like the stamina system is kind of easy to deplete in this game. When that happens you will very likely end of getting killed by the enemy.
Keep up the great work! You guys are so consistent, do not let politics get in the way of an honest review and overall entertaining content! I have saved myself money by watching these before you buys and not saved money as well 😉 Keep it coming
Another Souls-like game... I was hoping for something lighter, so I won't have to feel like I'm at work to enjoy, hard pass I guess... And before the trolls jump in with "if it's too hard then you're not a real gamer" or shit like that - I play games to relax and have fun, not to make me feel like I wanna break skulls from frustration and angst. A casual, if you must insist on trolling.
0:42 That's all I needed to know really... That refinement is crucial to a soulslike for me and something that no souls clone has been able to get right yet.
It just doesn't feel beefy when you hit an enemy. I don't know.. elden Ring did such a great job with their animation.. and dark souls set the standard for weight on making contact with an enemy.. *souls-like* just isn't good enough.
Yes the video we’ve been waiting for. Played hell a lot yesterday. Save data from demo really carried over and I skipped 3 bosses since I completed the demo. Thank God for Gamepass as well!
You have TPB for all your "try before you buy" or "try before you never buy" needs. And yes, I have a friend who has a friend that once got or may not got something from TPB and enjoyed "it" so much that decided to buy the real thing to support developers and have that "thing" it his/her possession. But I agree, bring back the demos!
If you aren’t a dynasty warriors fan you won’t really enjoy the game as much. I love it. I just hate that this game relies heavily on counters to do damage

Wait really??
@@PremMajumdarVG yep, or at least as far as I know.
so it is like sekiro system?
@@nickywan123 pretty much, yes.
but still feels like Nioh.
@@obscurus712 I wish it had the stances like Nioh
Awesome review, thank you! I played the demo, it was really fun and good. Kinda felt like I was playing Nioh 2 and Dynasty Warriors all in one game.
This game does look very interesting and I will probably check this out on the future.
👍🏼
@@gameranxTV 😎
I agree looks cool, and I had some fun with the demo's, but I think I'll wait till it goes on sale.
@@DarkPassenger Same here... Loved the demo and I want the game, but not at $70-$90 to start. Maybe once it's 50%-70% off.
@@Joreel I use to hate being that guy saying “ill wait till it’s 50 percent off”
but there’s way too many good games coming out for ps5 that okaish games are not worth the 70 dollar price tag,
or maybe I’m just getting old lmao
I almost quit on the first boss because I'm pretty bad, but since you said it was a tougher one, I'm going to stick with it. It's an awesome game. Good demos sell games!
I quit on the first one after 22 tries but bought it anyway cause I refuse to bitch out 😂
Literally "just block" during phase 2. Then parry the reds.
GET GOOD.
It took me a few attempts but he's not as bad as you'd think at first. He's quite manageable if you can keep hitting him and overwhelm and then deflect when he does hit
Get well soon
We want Black Myth: Wu Kong.
2024
Just 4 more weeks now😎
From the future the games out
Hands down best reviews. Not constantly shitting on the game for 20 mins.
I played the demo and really enjoyed it, came to watch this before confirming buying the game! Thanks guys
👍🏼
The setting is the Three Kingdoms Romance, same as Dynasty Warriors. My first run through the demo I quit when I found out the first boss has a second form. Then I replayed and found out I could block and parry while blocking. Wrecked that boss with no sweat. It's fun.
If I had to choose between game mechanics and the beauty of a game, I would pick the quality of game mechanics every time.
Same
Definitely
Till the point where the game was so fugly you couldn't read what was going on.
@HighLanderPony cap. I still play ps1 games to this day. Hint: most of them are still fantastic.
Everyone says that but if a game looks like shit it takes away from the game. People have this strange view that graphics don't mean anything. Growing up with 4 bit games, graphics are as important as mechanics. You need both to make a good to great game
It's based off of Dynasty Warriors. If you know the background of key characters...the plot in this game makes more sense.
The hype is real only few hrs wait til the fun starts
HI 👋 I JUST FARTED 🤣🤣🤣
Few hours? Set to NZ play now
This looks like everything I was hoping the game would be. Simple, pure fun and no micro transactions. I'm gonna enjoy playing this game very much!🤩
Lmao it has a season pass not sure what you’re talking about
Try nioh 2, it is much better than wo long
@@НачинающийГачист Wo long melee combat> Nioh 2
@@trvpmusic2569 To each their own. Personally, I think that in Nioh the combat system is much better. Different fighting stances with many tricks make the game dynamic and interesting. The same tricks in wo long quickly get bored
As a lifelong Dynasty Warriors fan, I better see Guan Yu and Xiahou Dun in this game
Both are in it
They are in along with plenty of other badass lads from DW/ Three Kingdoms
Where the homie Lu Bu at?
*EDIT*
Nvm, just seen the point in the video with Lu Bu lmao 🤣
@@RadiantNova159 oh hell yeah
That first boss is a lot easier if you have a fast weapon. Dual swords worked awesome for me. Took 3 hours to beat lol, but worth it.
Definitely influenced by Nioh 1 & 2 a LOT. Some of the enemies used are similar if not same. Even their animations. Kinda reminds me of how Elden Ring is basically the sum of all of From Software's current catalogue.
Geez it practically copied and pasted Nioh 2
Exactly, nioh 2.5 is all it is....another carbon copy
@@legendlonewolf1 Loving it, i'd love it even more if it wasnt so fucking shitty on the series s.
I haven't played it, but watching I was thinking it looks and sounds an awful lot like Nioh.
lol so glad I’ve been playing Dynasty Warriors for years to understand the lore and the characters
After Elden Ring, I think I am done with Souls-Borne games. I find them too tedious, personally. I don't have the kind of free time to get gud. I am glad that people get the kind of games they like though.
How much time do you need to learn? lol
Cling, Clang, Pshhh, Boom, DEAD!! LOVE THAT PART. Great content ma friend, keep it up!
Albeit very challenging most of the time
Just bought this today online. I can't wait til Monday to play this. I love souls and nioh so this is like my kind of tea
you playing on pc? tell me what you think after? i tried playing when it was realeased but it had so bad port for pc, but maybe they fixed?
This year is looking good so far for games. Hope the streak continues till the end of the year
Except I can't play them all right now 😭
I kind of agree with the dodge point.
A lot. It follows the same story basically and has many of the legendary characters like Guan Yu and Sun Ce
@@SeanHiruki hmm does it have sekereo?
I’m not expecting it to go a lot further than Guandu tbh.
I honestly can't believe that Koei Tecmo allowed Team Ninja to steal Omega Force's schtick...and better
But I'm all for it lol
@@dddaaa6965 sekiro takes place in Japan. This game is in china
It's absolutely spectacular. They do need to do a better job of explaining specific effects pertaining to those that can be placed on armor and weapons.
Like what they are for, what they do. Some are pretty self-explanatory, but others aren't gonna make much sense to a lot of people.
Absolutely loved the demo can't wait till Friday to dive deep into the game
The parry window is very forgiving which makes this much more accessible for people like me that only ever played Elden Ring.
That thumbnail literally never gets old

I’ve never played a souls like game before and this will be my first since it’s on game pass. Wish me luck
Just wanted to say thank you guys, great video as always
the game is amazing combat is fantastic Team Ninja never disappoint me,I love it 10/10
I do believe they should have made the first boss a bit easier or gave you more of a fighting chance I would’ve been cool with
6 hours in and cant beat that boss , wanted to play coop , but seems I cant in the beginning.... so im sellinng that shit
@@ulfheonar9126 I ended up beating go watch my live brooski
I DONT believe they should actually. I think thats the point. That steep difficulty curve is a norm. Bum rushing isnt going to help so try to compose yourself and spend a few deaths learning the attack patterns. Youll definitely get it down.
I always appreciate before you buys even if I have too many games to play before I buy another XD
Same here! Prefer smooth gameplay over laggy games.
But it also stutters so... lol.
Unfortunately the PC port for this game is abysmal. I refunded the game because it was borderline unplayable.
But not only does this game look awful it also performs terribly...
Holy shit, I never heard Jake curse before hahahahaha
Man, I am so pumped to play this!!!
Another amazing review, This is the first time I bought a game before I watched your before you buy videos, as I had played the demo and had so much fun even though I got my butt handed to me lol
Same, good luck 🍀
I'm not really a Souls fan, but the way this is presented - as more of a Souls-lite experience - I think I can definitely get behind. I loved Jedi: Fallen Order so if this is similar to that (or even a tad bit tougher) then I think it will be right up my alley.
Hello Gameranx Family hope everyone enjoys the video.
Hello
I bought the game after enjoying the gameplay a whole lot in the demo. So I agree with your shoutout to bring back demos. For me I only bought it because of the demo.
I was waiting for this video so badly
Thanks for your patience
Find it hard to take reviews at heart when the makers are the ones to provide you a copy.
Wait so you're not gonna try it because it was made out to be an awesome souls like game??
So, your not gonna play it because you suck at souls like games such as this??
I first played the game at the Tokyo Game Show September last year and I thought it was amazing. Lots of fun. The combat is definitely the star of the show.
Thank you Jake and team. My heroes

HI 👋 I JUST FARTED 🤣🤣🤣
Great video! Can I make a suggestion? When you’re talking about different weapons, magic, etc. can you highlight what you are talking about in the video? IE, when discussing different spells, show us some of the spells
I like how Tecmo put Zhang Liang right in the beginning of the demo. It's almost as if they're saying to potential customers: Listen, this dude is the "Skill Check Boss if you purposely don't use the Dragon Summon" if you can't get past him, don't buy the game//
He is the first boss of the game lmao and extremely easy
Ngl I didn’t know they wanted you to use the divine beast until my 8th try 💀
@@TheGamingGopher don’t feel bad, I beat him without it and didn’t realize what divine best was till the 3rd lvl lmao
If you loved Sekiro, you will have a ton of fun. It is the same rythm based combat that satisfyingly pays off for good players who can perfect parry.
I will be real here, the gameplay isn't really all of that. It could had been more flashy instead of it being somewhat underwhelming. Like the stamina system is kind of easy to deplete in this game. When that happens you will very likely end of getting killed by the enemy.
4:37, exactly how I felt when my friends recommended this game to me. Great video
Keep up the great work! You guys are so consistent, do not let politics get in the way of an honest review and overall entertaining content! I have saved myself money by watching these before you buys and not saved money as well 😉
Keep it coming
When I saw this game, it reminded me a lot of Dynasty warriors.
Didn't know they were the same studio. Awesome!
The character creator was my favorite part🤣 .. cause I died alot in the demo
A dynasty Warriors/Souls hybrid! Love it! Although, I wish we had a new, really decent Dynasty Warriors game. But this will do until then!
I LOVE the Three Kingdoms era! How have I not heard of this game until now? 😭😭
Can't be a soul game if it has no soul
0:42 That's all I needed to know really... That refinement is crucial to a soulslike for me and something that no souls clone has been able to get right yet.
finally a game i can be a monster of a masculine dude samurai with she/her pronounce
You guys are the only ones I trust to give an honest review
This game has flavour 🤤
It just doesn't feel beefy when you hit an enemy. I don't know.. elden Ring did such a great job with their animation.. and dark souls set the standard for weight on making contact with an enemy.. *souls-like* just isn't good enough.
All i see is Nioh game from a different universe
Y'all have saved me so much money from avoiding some trainwreck games thank y'all seriously!

Yes the video we’ve been waiting for. Played hell a lot yesterday. Save data from demo really carried over and I skipped 3 bosses since I completed the demo. Thank God for Gamepass as well!
If From Software was to help out with this game I think would of had a near perfect souls like experience
"You can do special attacks called: Martail Arts"
I dont know why but that made me laugh out loud. Very creative naming 😂

I'm so over every new jack and slasher has to be souls like , not everyone want to grind for hours just to enjoy a game .
If you aren’t a dynasty warriors fan you won’t really enjoy the game as much. I love it. I just hate that this game relies heavily on counters to do damage
