    Man do I fucking hate this. I'm black and I get so much shit for liking metal, rock, bluegrass etc ("white music"). I have a Slint shirt, Dead Kennedy's shirt, Frank Zappa shirt and a couple metal band shirts. I always look like a sellout or white boy to them. I can't talk about music I like or bring up the new artists I like and it annoys tf out of me.
    I feel there's this need for some blacks to preserve the black culture, which means traditionally black music as well. It's understandable but the fact that there are other genres I like doesn't mean I'm trading in my rap and R&B card for a rock/metal card. On the opposite side, I feel it's the same for whites trying to enjoy hip hop like how Anthony said in the video.

      totally agree. My dad jokingly makes fun of me starting to get into rap music as we're a white family and he's never understood the appeal of the genre and probably never will. He jokes that I'm done with Rush and Queen and classic rock bands because I've started exploring Run-DMC or Kendrick Lamar.

    I am black and i listen to a lot of metal and other stuff on the spectrum, i tend to dodge the question. However, it is not mainly because i am black, it's mainly because it's difficult to explain my tastes to people who only listen to pop music and rap. Living in the UK, nobody ever really gave me that much shit for liking metal, except for a couple of family members, but they are African and they don't get it, it is something really far from familiarity considering the culture they come from, so i don't really get offended. I saw people making comments about how black people are obsessed with being a monolith or whatever, but from my experience it is completely false. You really couldn't be able to do that with the black people i know because they all come from different cultures and different religions. I remember some girl who told me that ever since she found BET, she felt closer to her black roots, because she felt that she had been abandoning it the whole time by hanging out with white people all the time. All i thought was, wtf, your from Angola, not America, i was confused af.
    I was just rambling kind of at the end, I just thought i would post something that will get lost in the sea of unfunny memes, i probably took too much effort to write this.

    I believe it's important to note that everything Anthony says also applies when it comes to genders in music. Like how culture tends to assume girls don't like rock music (or a lot of types of music for that matter, but I'll stick with the rock thing for simplicity), or especially that they can't make rock music, simply because of the more patriarchal culture in which rock and roll began. The idea of a girl drummer or bass player seems to astound people even more than that of a black drummer or bassist, for instance. Of course no one questions female singers, but then it's like they don't believe girls can play instruments. Ever heard of Alabama Shakes? Heart? Fleetwood Mac? The White Stripes? seriously.

    4:10 This is so true, if it's not R&B, Soul, or some form of Hip-Hop, in this case Trap then people will consider it trash because they only follow it via what is popular now. This is also why I hate trends.

  • @Protocity
    @Protocity 7 років тому +13

    As a AA, I can confirm that culturally we're like this. It's not "cool" for us to listen to genres that aren't R&B, Soul, Hip Hop, Disco, etc. Even though I usually listen to Hip Hop and Soul because I prefer it, listening to especially "white" genres like Country or Metal will get you roasted. So until it becomes more culturally acceptable, this'll continue. Unfortunately I don't see this stopping anytime soon.

    As someone who has had this conversation years ago when I was a child... I was asked "Do you listen to black music?" I said "Sure, I listen to Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Living Colour..." I was stopped "No man, black music" I said "They are black..." "They're not black music though, man" (if this would have been now he would have said bruh). I said "Why are they not black music?" "Because it's not rap...". I realized that music that had a black artist performing it didn't mean it was black music to what was urban youth at the time, because it didn't align with a cultural standard of being American music from the ghetto and because of that the artist race didn't count as far as being black enough. What I found funny was a few years later, the same black kids that tried to school me on black music were walking around in Hendrix and Marley t-shirts...

    I agree with the overall point of the video, but I do take issue with that "no one looks back on their younger years and says,
    'I wish I were more like other people'" line
    It's a really minor thing, but I feel like having conformed to whatever other people were doing would've made my life easier, and maybe even better
    I'm 23 now and I still struggle to get along with most people, since I'm usually seen as a weirdo with nonsensical interests

    • @Sorcering
      @Sorcering 7 років тому +5

      also I was perplexed by the statement that conforming was "the easiest thing" like what do you mean? I can't not be me and like what I like, when you're passionate about something you can't just pretend you're not and invest your time and energy into something else, you know?

    • @MrFillzor

      Shanny Hawin Yeah, it's not like we have complete control over who we are
      I get that Fantano's point is more focused on accepting yourself and doing what you enjoy, but even if you manage to accept yourself, that doesn't mean that will solve your problems
      Fitting in is an important part of living in society
      We can't pretend other people's opinions don't matter (even if just slightly), because at the end of the day we all need to find a group who is willing to support us

    • @christopherg.8591
      @christopherg.8591 7 років тому +2

      MrFillzor But are your passions something so out of the ordinary that would make people wanna be away from you? I got a friend that was into Yaoi and I consider that weird, however she still had friends, I am her friend, she was talkative, she just liked something I found weird, and totally didn't like.

    • @MrFillzor
      @MrFillzor 7 років тому +2

      Christopher G. You see, that's kinda tricky to answer
      I don't particularly think my tastes are all that out of ordinary, but that's because I spend most of my time with the anglophone community on the internet
      So by those standards, I'm fairly normal
      However, interacting with people from my country in real life is kind of a chore, because subjects that are common ground between English speakers seem to be mostly unknown to most people I meet
      So I see your point and I don't mean to contradict your example, since I also have a small group of friends that don't think I'm all that odd
      However, outside of this group, I'm pretty much a weirdo, hence my gripe with Fantano's statement
      Given that my group is fairly small and that it's mostly composed by men, it's been really hard for me to even go on dates, because I can't really interact all that well with people outside my group (and the few girls that I do know are already dating someone)

    • @christopherg.8591
      @christopherg.8591 7 років тому +3

      MrFillzor I was writing a long essay to respond with when I found out that you already got the answer, you said you can't interact all that well with people outside of your group, have you come to the conclusion that It's because of what you like or because you just lack social skills? Most of the times It's the second one. You could say I am kind of weird If I told you I like ASMR, because well, I admit watching videos. of someone whispering to a mic is kind of weird, but I know this won't prevent me from knowing how to talk to people. And this is something I know because yeah I've had problems with interacting with people, I posses extroverted blood in me, but things have made me a lot more quiet, however this isn't because I like X, It's simply that I did not take care of my social interaction skills.
      I may be talking shit, I don't know what kind of things you like, however If you say It's normal then I'll take your word on it and tell you I'm pretty sure the thing that is really fucking up your socializing is your social skills. And with girls It's a whole other story, however really, think about someone that is good at talking to people, If you were to dig deep down, you think they are not weird? They also don't have some things that maybe don't reveal to everybody but just their closest friends? Maybe they have some same interests as you but only a select of their friends know it.

      Thin Lizzy were one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Take a look at their discography and talk to any fan about which albums are the best. There are one or maybe two semi-duds, and literally everything else is some kind of classic, nearly incomparable. Not to mention the Lizzy went totally metal at the end of their career and it was epic. And who was cooler than Phil Lynott, the singer/songwriter, bass playing front-man who happened to be a black Irishman? No one. No one was cooler than Phil Lynott, even the Fonz would agree.

    But when they really want the answer I say "because I like that kind of music". They normally give me a weird look and change the subject.

    Ion get why some people refuse to listen to more than one genre, I grew up listening to rock music but got into hip hop from my friends when I was like 12, those are the 2 genres I listen to the most consistently but I also listen to genres like jazz, R&B, funk and soul, people could benefit from expanding their music knowledge outside of one genre or at least trying out different genres to see if they actually like it or not

    It's 2017. Most of the new culture is global, everyone is permeated by the internet flux. You may think you live in a ghetto but you actually live a great amount of your life online mingling in a potluck of global culture. So increasingly people will simply express these inter-influences and just do whatever they want and find their niche on the world wide web or whatever is replacing that. Ethnicity might become a blurry notion in a 100 years, yet that doesn't imply we will have solved racial issues (I have no idea about that, will people mix or segregate?), just that the racism might go on while people develop a more homogenous sense of culture (and not in the current state of anglo-american aesthetics prevailing in the mainstream, rather I think we will pass through a better balance of inter-continental influences until then).

    I agree on most points, and my one point of real disagreement is minor, and supports the basic thesis: Rocknroll wasn't really black or white- it was mixed- it was what came from mixing black blues and jazz with white appalachian folk ( from bluegrass to country swing).

I think teenagers are dicks who will find a reason to pick on the weird kid for doing anything out of the ordinary and the race issue is probably just a dumb justification.

    I think you can have a work of art addressed to a certain group of people, be them your friends or your enemies, or any specified group you mean to target. It's just that some people might enjoy it without having much clues about the drama on point, like they are removed and or feel unconcerned (even oblivious) culturally by the content or message of your art.

    I think racial biases in music aren't a bad thing. Anyone can make any type of music, but ignoring that most of the best rappers are black and most of the best rockers are white is stupid. It's all about culture really. It's true that American/UK rock came from black American rhythm and blues, but the (mainly) white people that made it pushed it into a new form. We all acknowledge that different nationalities have their own music like Jamaican dancehall, African type beats, Mexican folk, etc. It's not racist to acknowledge that different people are naturally better at making a certain type of music because it's cultural.
    Most rap, mainly old rap, is about the stuggle of poverty, drug dealing, and trying to make it big. Country music was always about farm life and everything about living in a small town. Those old rappers and country artists we're putting their experience through the form that was most accustomed to "their people".
    Again, this isn't to say that someone of a certain race can't make great music using other cultural influence. Vampire Weekend was raked over the coals for "stealing" African music. Drake has obviously thefted Jamaican sounds to make modern rap. Wale uses his African roots in rap. Rage Against The Machine, one of the biggest rock bands ever, was headed by Zach de la Rocha. OF COURSE anyone can make music in any way they want, but it's not disrespectful or racist to notice that certain music is dominated by a certain race or appeals widely to a certain race.

    • @erlineandrews
      @erlineandrews 7 років тому +74

      "It's not racist to acknowledge that different people are naturally better at making a certain type of music because it's cultural." When you start saying certain behavior is natural to certain races you're being racist.

    • @tommym7321
      @tommym7321 7 років тому +27

      Erline Andrews A person from Nigeria making Hausa music will natually be more enthusiastic and probably better at making it than another nationality, even from another African country. It isn't racial it's about nationality. I'm saying that music links to tradition. Traditional rap music was dominated by black Americans. We have our Eminems of the world who are great white rappers but there are significantly less white rappers than black rappers. The reason is that a lot of white people don't have such drive to create rap music as black people do. The reason rap has stayed dominated by primarily black people is because modern rap is following the roots of itself. Race plays a part in what I'm talking about but I'm trying to show how tradition is more of a factor than race. It's not racist to think about these things.

    • @erlineandrews
      @erlineandrews 7 років тому +54

      You insist on using the word "naturally". You realize there's a difference between being naturally able to do something and learning it because a lot of people around you were doing it?

    • @erlineandrews
      @erlineandrews 7 років тому +32

      I actually don't agree with his basic point. I don't think culture is the main reason most rappers are black and most rock musicians are white. The social expectations of your race has a lot to do with it and I think that's wrong.

    • @tommym7321
      @tommym7321 7 років тому +26

      Erline Andrews My wording is bad in just saying "naturally". What I mean by saying that is that there is a more natural inclination for a person entrenched in that culture to use their cultures musical history. I'm Hawaiian and I try to connect to my culture by learning old Hawaiian folk songs. I'm more inclined to do that than a white person because of my nationality. It isn't a cultural expectation to do that. If you grew up as an ethnic kid in the inner city, listening to rap and having something relevant to your situation being said through rap, you're more inclined to make rap if you use that as your inspiration.

    I'm about to drop the mood in the comments section and be serious (sry fam), but I feel like this discrimination also happens among genders. Guys are suddenly "gay" or "girly" when they enjoy music from female pop artists or genres like KPop. Girls have to prove that they're not "fake fans" when they reveal they listen to classic rock or metal (insert the *if you're really a fan of ___, name non-title tracks* thing or some other ridiculous clapback). Gay men are expected to listen to pop divas and know pop culture like the back of their hands. Lesbians are expected to stan lesbian/bisexual female artists.
    Idk what my point is here but people just like to put others in boxes like let them live and enjoy the music they like smh

    Great answer Anthony, I agree with you. It's a good advice. Keep listening to what's meaningful to you, whatever it is. Stay curious and open as well, but it shouldn't have any relevance to your racial background. Music is universal. Personally, I don't look at the genres or at the person behind the mic before deciding to listen to it or not. That's why I like your channel, because you're not limiting your reviews to anything. The only reason not to listen to something is if it's really dreadful (mind you, I do it, and it's funny...), it's a test to see how long I can hold on to these before I press stop, basically :D Bad shit has some purpose, I guess! haha! Anyway, listen to what you want to listen to and oink oink to the haters (to stay polite)... Peace & luv' folks.

    Every time the industry starts pushing us out of our own music, a mass of ppl stigmatize it and shun it. Jazz, Rock, House, etc. It's like a survival mechanism, we immediately deem it uncool or unacceptable and move on. "Oh, Elvis the King, huh? Never mind the greats and pioneers. Okay, we onto the next one, that over there is wack, we don't mess with that then." Just how it goes. But anyway those people would be very surprised, I suppose, that the actual hiphop artists whom they love have all types of diverse influences and taste. Sheesh Scarface went and started a rock band lol. Beast on the guitar. Chuck D! I mean the most popular samples.... nuff said.

    I think that while cultural norms should indeed be fluid, they will always have a history that informs their momentum. I don't think the reason "white people music" is a category can be summed up as simplistic prejudice. Of course a more considerate approach to the person who emailed you is ideal, but there is a huge amount of history and experience that goes into such resentment toward the music your emailer listens to. I think a legitimate argument can be made for the 'whiteness' of certain facets of pop culture and the 'blackness' of other facets. The danger in doing this, of course, is giving into the idea that to categorize in such a way is to permanently restrict said facets.
    I guess the biggest point I'm making is that being socially conscious means reconciling the influence history has on normality with the idea/hope that such normality can change/evolve/refine itself, etc.

    Don't see why so many commenters are acting as though black people are the only ones who act clique-y or think you're weird for being different. There are plenty of non-blacks who can't handle a strong independent black person that don't need no Top 40. Sometimes even just knowing about The Smiths or The Strokes is enough to surprise some of them. Also going to a MBV show is kinda WOW to some of these folks because in their minds MBV appeals to quiet, introspective, emotionally sensitive people and blacks are supposed to be loud and confident, so black person at a MBV show = does not compute. Same shit applies with more cerebral/experimental/dark/weird forms of music too. There have also been times when people of other races would be all like "hey I've been listening to lots of golden age rap recently? *looks at me in a 'do you find that cool?' way*" I stood the fuck out wearing my rainbow scarf at a Sutcliffe Jugend show when pretty much all the other people were there in a "uniform" (dark clothes, body mods, alt-fashion, military shit, etc).
