  • This is the Jeep Rubicon 392's maiden voyage after installing the AEV 2.5" DualSport Lift Kit and adding 37-inch tires. My plan was to overland travel from my home in San Antonio, Texas, to my Dad's place in Phoenix, Arizona. Although the route will mostly be on paved highways, getting off-pavement and off the grid were also two main goals of this trip. I took this opportunity to test out the Jeep's new heavy-duty suspension and tow my self-built overlanding travel trailer, the M1102. The trip begins near the city of Del Rio, TX, where I spent the night at a popular campsite overlooking Lake Amistad. As I work my way across West Texas, I stopped to see some interesting sights and unique geographical features. After camping in a remote wooded area in Southeastern Arizona, I then work my way towards Phoenix where I visited with family and did a little nearby off-road exploration. Finally, the return leg brought me to yet another remote, but not-so-remote, boondocking campsite before making the long journey back into Texas.

Definitely one of the most beautiful and underrated states in the country! Probably a good thing or else everyone would move there if they understood!

So glad I found your channel. We have a ecodiesel wrangler rubicon on 37's and use our m1102 to camp out of. Different setup to you, we have the stock soft top and just use a queen size 3 piece matress in the bed. Took our 20 month old camping of the Big Frog Loop in southern TN with it not long ago and thank god she loves it!
I really want to spec a 3500 torsion axle for it. Bot a bad deal either when you consider it comes with new brakes, bearings, swap to 5x5 for wheel compatibility, and most of all proper suspension action. That and a swap to a DO-35 hitch are on the list for me.
Have you noticed if the trailer now pulls easier with the 35's and much light wheel??

The M1102/01 is a great platform to build from! Sounds like it was a fun trip! I used to live an hour north of Nashville in the city of Bowling Green, Kentucky. I really wish I had explored more of that area before I left. And that's interesting about the torsion axle. Would that have less bounce than the stock M1102 setup? The trailer rides basically the same with the 35s as it did with the 37s. The main thing I noticed was improved fuel economy! I went from 11 to 12.5 miles per gallon when towing with this setup.

@@TheNotSoOrdinaryCarGuy yeah. The military spec'd a 7k torsion axle to be ridiculously overbuilt considering the stated payload. Add to that in my JLURD the tow rating is only 3500lbs anyway. So going to the 3500lb axle would actually allow the suspension to travel properly and not bounce all over the place. When loaded our 1102 rides fairly decent but empty it is a bounce fest and the 3500lb axle will help with that a bunch.
Also the 3500lb axle uses smaller brakes which allows for a 5x5 hub, making the trailer wheels last ditch spares for the jeep.
Biggest pro to it is that when you give them all the dimensions it should just be a simple unbolt and bolt in swap.

Wow, I'm definitely going to be looking into that. Thank you! I think it may also bounce a lot because it still has somewhat of a rake? The only time that it sat completely level was when I towed it with a Ram Power Wagon and used the riser. It seemed a tad less bouncy. But, I probably just haven't loaded it down with all that much weight compared to what it's capable of. Lol. I just love this thing. There's endless modification possibilities and it just takes a beating. I've looked at purpose built overlanding trailers and although some of them do catch my eye, I just can't justify the added cost (I much rather put that $$ into the tow vehicle lol) and in the end, there's just something cool about this trailer and it's military heritage. Much like the Jeep itself.

Are you referring to the Governor’s Landing campground at Lake Amistad?
