Huge thanks to Skillshare for sponsoring this video and supporting my channel!
One day in college, I found myself waking up in the same day over and over again. I also realized that I looked exactly like Bill Murray on that day. By reliving the exact same day dozens, if not hundreds of times, I eventually figured out how to avoid every possible misstep that could happen. I learned how to dance, saved the world from aliens, and received the key to the city.
Unfortunately, I was a student for more than one day. Here are some of the mistakes I made on those other days - and what you can learn from them.

Hey dude I have been listening to your videos just few days and I could see a positive impact on my studies...I just wanted to thank you a lot....now I feel much committed to my passion..just meet you after my success....take care
Q
I'm still in college, but my biggest regret so far is trusting the professors who say their exams are going to be easy.
Natt 774 😂😂😂😂
Natt 774 so true!
Universal truth😂
...Most of my classes had easy tests. A lot of them were straight out of the books, so I just had to read the relevant chapter right before class started, and pick the multiple choice answer that completed the quote that I had just seen.
But I think I probably would've remembered more in the long run if I had to learn the stuff.
😥 Why do I feel like I'm going to make that mistake when college starts....?
1) Ambition, Delusion, Burnout 1:05
2) Energy Drinks 2:12
3) Jumping the internship gun 3:17
4) Quitting too soon 5:33
5) Failing to ask for help 7:27
6) The dating mistake 8:36
7) A lack of due diligence 10:52
8) Zero fun, sir! 12:30
Somehow I missed the fact that I put the wrong llama card before mistake #2 - thanks to everyone who caught it. Can't fix it now though! :P
I just assumed you were somehow romantically involved with energy drinks honestly
@@Will-qv6es 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Mistakes happend
I see what you did there.
I thought exactly the same thing.
I regret : 1. procrastinating in school and college as well.
2. Lacking confidence in myself
3. Allowing the horrifying sad experiences in school depress me.
4. Not investing time on my talents because i was mostly depressed + daydreaming.
how did you get over all of this?
@@hinddrid2496 i would release my depression by praying & crying it out. I was stubborn to somehow attain my goal & hardworked even if it was the last minute & graduated school and college.
NowI'm back at sharpening my talents & i got the job I wanted- teacher & exactly I same school I wanted to get it. I'm working in the same school where I graduated.
So me!!!😑
Same. Trying to make up for it now
^^^^^ *sigh*
Making mistakes, especially in youth, is part of life. While all of the advice is really good, I try not to look back with regret, but instead I look forward with optimism
-Brett Kavanaugh
Don't do that either. Just look at the present. (Power of now)
Gotta learn from it though
@@christolourens1229 most definitely, our experiences and failures are there to learn from, just not worth dwelling on
He's not trying to dwell on his mistakes, just pointing them out to help us. I think he was doing the same thing that you say.
Asking for help can hurt the pride of some but if you swallow it up, asking for help will increase your understanding and grades.
Also be careful of who and what to ask?
This is actually really helpful for perfectionists, as opposed to what they tell you in school, which usually boils down to: "don't party, don't skip class, and you'll be fine."
I regret not starting a UA-cam channel while it was in its infancy instead of trying to get straight A’s in college.
Mitigate that regret and start one now! I guarantee you there are people who will start brand new channels this year and grow bigger than me before 2019 is over. Yes, there's more competition on the platform than ever - but there are also more viewers, which makes niches that were totally non-viable before have an actual chance at getting decent viewership (seriously - who could have predicted a channel like TierZoo?)
Yes - more competition, but more viewers. Television is dead. In the 1990s I used to be able to watch college courses on cable. Wonder if they still do that.
I regret not taking college more seriously in my teens and 20s now I back in college and I am 30 but I am almost done .
I'll just tell you this. I don't have a tv service not do I have Netflix or any other subscription and I barely play video games during school year. All my entertainment comes from UA-cam.
DO IT NOW
How naiv. Thats not how it works.
Production levels have risen so high, that basically nobody can create a youtube channel part-time. You need to commit heavily to it, with at least 1 video a week. Even if you want the most basic level of success.
Its way better to use youtube as a tool, to create customers, for a services that you offer and then do that service. ALWAYS EARN MONEY FROM DAY1.
The best advice I've ever gotten from a teacher is "know when to do A- work." Of course, it's great to go above and beyond but sometimes to maximize efficiency and minimize burnout it's okay to not give 110% to an assignment that has little impact overall.
One regret as a student: choosing a major you don’t really enjoy:/
Same here. I chose French and German because I like languages and that's the ones we studied at school, but especially French is not favourite language. Now I study more varied languages in my master, and focus more on creole languages and malagasy that interest me more. Though I suppose French was a bit of a springboard towards these languages.
...Or choosing a college without the major you wanted.
There was one specialized college that had sent me info, and it sounded really wonderful, but no one I knew thought I should try applying there, so I just went to the local college I lived close to. I did get a free ride there, though. But it took a long time to decide on a major and I didn't get to do what I really wanted.
Choosing a wrong university is my regret
I am studying biology in a third world country ( my home) and it's soooo bad
I was excited at first, but then I realized that I am not learning biology the way it should be.
Everything we have is broken and stuck, missing or old, or we have just one of something and we shouldn't touch it.
Biology is based on discovering and experimenting not just staring at the professors ( who by the way are very old and most of them don't welcome questions) some of my professors don't even prepare the books ( we don't buy books, we buy a copy of the professor's lessons ) the copies are either late or in a bad condition ... They don't respect the exam date, and they always change it to their likings ... So it's always a surprise.
I wished I went to another university out of my country ( I know people studied outside the country, and the system is way better than ours )
Studying too much and not getting involved is one of my regrets as well.
really? Can you tell me more about it please? I just started university this month and I want to get all A's so therefore I'm studying a lot even though my next exams are in december... Why is it bad to study too much? And from your personal experience what was "too much" for you, like how much did you study and how?? Sorry for all these questions I really want to have a good start :)
MULTIFANDOM // BTS and A.C.E slay my lifeu not just studying so much by heart, but to actually try and make use of what you learn. applying it. maybe in specific job, maybe by talking to people outside of your circle etc. ALSO: taking care of your life as well, getting involved and forming real friendships, enjoying life while being a student. eating healthy, working out...thinking about finances
stuff like that.

Dating mistake : ENERGY DRINKS!
My brain was working really hard to connect these two
He was in a relationship with Monsters and Rockstars :P
Let's face it, I basically was dating them
Right I was like did he do that on purpose?😂
‘Beverage entertainment’- what an interesting concept, somehow it makes so much sense!
I like your voice , it's quite fast but very clear

Hey Thomas ever thought of giving a TED talk?? I really think you should....
Thanks! I'm a college student and it's been busy and draining for some parts but I get motivated watching your videos. I think this has been helpful and hope to follow your advice
"Not disengaging when a hard problem comes up!"- That's a lesson which is still applicable in my life now (probably will for many years to come as well)..
Your speech is very impressive.
I admit
im doing one now having a quiz tomorrow and i don't know why after 1 hour study i feel like i didn't study a thing (Database principles)
Are you using your ANKI and 20 rules for formulating knowledge?
The ”too hard”, I am definately guilty of, I struggled on my own with math parts of certain courses instead of looking for someone who could me understand it.
Mostly I blamed it on , shrugged it of, by not taking a higher math course before university, but I didn’t make a effort to truly gather that knowledge in hindsight. I really didn’t have any friends in the courses that could help me but I could probably have found help somewhere else.
Communities online being the quick and easiest one.
I came to the university a student with good grades and view of myself as a Academically skilled but quickly felt behind compared to the other classmates’ skills. Which the math-parts Only made me feel even more like I was misplaced.
In short, if you are struggling and feel like you have no one around that can help, quit the self-pity and look further. Find ways to fill in the gaps in your own knowledge and skills.
I was a student a long long long time ago. Guess what? I went back to college and am writing back to college from which I am writing this comment. This was long before UA-cam existed and even at a time when people where only starting to get interested in computers and what they were all about. People actually were more curious about computers and wanted to learn more about them before the average worker had a terminal on his desk [today]. Eventually, my first laptop back then had a Black and White Screen with WIN 3.1.
But here I am again -- back in school-- and one can be sure to learn practical approaches to being a student. And no, you'll not likely find a relationship at a bar nor, is it a good or reasonable place to look. Let that be your college lesson for the future especially if your an undergrad now. I'm still learning new and valuable lessons. These ready tips and tricks were not available back then. You had to work more to find them. Most of your lessons were learnt from doing and that may be the most valuable lesson of all.
I'm guilty of pretty much all of these. This actually came at the perfect time because my next semester starts in a week. Thanks Thomas, great video!
Thank you so much for this! I’ll definitely try to learn from these while I’m still in my third year of college.
You're one of my biggest inspiration
S?!
Lmao, jokes on you, with my bank account I can't even afford to get addicted to energy drinks
I'm in high school currently. I know I want to go to college so I've been trying to apply the knowledge provided on this channel as well as some other which has helped emensly. I'm glad I'm still able to get into the habits of studying and problem solving because not doing so in college can be a very expensive mistake. Thank you, keep up the good work
How do you read my mind everytime you post a video!! This was exactly what I needed right now . Thank you so much
Thomas make a video on how to improve programming skills
Love your stuff man keep it up
what does stuff mean ?

Thomas comes across as honest and forthcoming about his life. Refreshing in this day and age. Kudos...
Thanks for the video! Am currently struggling with #1, as I'm currently in my 3rd week of 4th year uni. #5 is also so true too.
Definitely most inspiring UA-camr! Glad i subscribed
How can someone's eyes be this beautiful?
Last time I was this early I was failing three courses
Ouch. That hits too close to home
Thomas Frank, you have helped me through my college experience and of all the videos I have watched, this has to be the most relatable and my favorite video so far. A semester ago I fan girl shrieked when my calc professor mentioned and even recommended you to the class as motivation to pass his class LOL. Thank you for this video and the LLAMAS.
Amazing how you described me in this video, im currently free from energy drinks but after years of having burnout and only sleeping 20 minutes to get stuff done, its been way too tough to find out what works for me that doesnt harm me thank you
I was actually thinking about singing up for Skillshare and it's honestly just crazy that I randomly stumbled upon your video that gave me 2 months for free! Thanks a lot man, I love Skillshare and can't wait to start working on my own projects. I got a job as software developer but my true passion is 2D illustrating so I'll be sure to check out some Adobe Illustrator tutorials out there :D Cheers!
Thomas, thank you so much for your videos, I really look up to you, you've been a huge help for me during my first year of university (especially during my dreaded exams 😂) and you give me a lot of confidence! Keep up the good job!💜
I think you used the 'Dating Mistake' text for the one about fizzy drinks as well?
Great video Tom! I'm still working my way through college so this is gonna help for sure
Thomas! Loved the emotional part of this episode. It's always so fascinating hearing about the more vulnerable parts of you. Can't wait to see more!
Thank you for sharing😊. Quitting too soon and failing to ask for help are the problems I recently experienced and working towards improving.
Currently in my first year of university.
Side note: Signed up on Skillshare recently and I love it!😍
I just came across this channel yesterday and I have to say I really enjoyed the thoughtful content you produce!!!
Thank you so much for sharing man, I am in college now and am trying to find out what I need to focus on and your videos make it easier everyday. Once again thanks for the quality content, keep it up bruther.
I'd like to add to your caffeine point. You can also get addicted to other things. Literally anything that you use a lot of. I got addicted to sugar and wheat products. Granted, my issue was related to a physical ailment where my body was demanding carbs to keep going. But I've known plenty of people who don't have any particular ailments who have gotten addicted to sugar and carbs. It has the same psychological link as the energy drink example in this video (or smoking). And since it took me literally a decade to detox myself from both sugar and wheat, and I didn't get anything done with my life for that decade, I don't want anyone else to go through that.
The way you incoorperate skillshare in your videos is next level. You have such a smooth transition from the subject you're talking about to skillshare! :)
On the note of giving up too soon, I recently took a course on "Philosophy of Logic." It's a class that reviews the basics of logic language in order to prep Comp. Sci. based majors for programming classes, as a Bio major (you can imagine) it was interesting. My first exam grade was a 55% and I honestly didn't think that I could go through the class, but I pushed on and ended up with a B+ in the class. At the end of the day, you will get the greatest satisfaction when you push yourself at something you struggle at.
Your channel is literally a miracle to the life of us, students. Thank you so much for your awesome work!
I love your videos! Thank you for making your recommendations genuine, relevant, and direct! I am an academic advisor and instructor at the University of Iowa College of Business and I encourage so many of my students to follow you.
Thanks so much, Thomas! I'm looking for Medicine college next year, very focus and hard working on it, and thanks for your thoughts and learnings, it helped and keep helping me a lot!
honestly, im still a solider since army service is mandatory in my country so ill start uni in a year and a half. when im twenty but i still like your videos since they are really good tips for life aswell and for me working on my university tests. and i love it. thank you so much
THANK YOU FOR THIS!! This was probably the most realistic, helpful video I've seen. :D I love your videos!!
Tom thank you so much for sharing your mistakes in collage!!!, I can really relate to many (almost every one) of them. You had remind me that I really need to enjoy this time of my life while doing all the good curricular stuff but also taking risks to persuit what I really want my life to become. And trying to find friends that share some of my interests.
I like all the recent videos you're making, Its like the perfect fit for the things that are happening right now in my life. I can't thank you enough!!!!! 😄😉👏

I just finished watching this Dr. Jubbal video, and now yt recommended me this,
Yt your doing right job
Looks like your videos have reached the quality peak 😍 keep up the good work sensei
I would be a bit more serious if I could start it from the beginning. During my frashman years I was totally irresponsible with my college career, I was just partying and tried to avoid most of the college related stuff. That was my main mistake. During my third year, I've started following you on UA-cam, and about that time, I've had a turning point. Now I've graduated and have a good job oportunity, but I know that my life could turn out really bad too. Thanks for the support during the grind. Keep on! :)
Looks like you always know what i need, i'm typin' now about "highly emotional mistake''.
Thank you for the video champ! We all the wat UP!
I love your videos man, It's so entertaining and educational
Can you talk about how to take advantage of office hours? I don't really know what to do with them.
Christine S I think this is a really good suggestion! I used to be part of kind of a mentoring programme at a university in Germany which focuses especially on first generation students, and a lot of them would often ask about how to speak to professors, how to build up the courage and stop being too shy towards the seemingly wise teachers etc. It’s an issue for a lot of students and can stop you exactly from what was Thomas‘ point, asking for help or advice which you absolutely deserve and which professors are there for to give to you!
This could be a good video topic!
The main thing is to be observant of what confuses you when working through assignments or doing readings. Even if you solve a problem, you should note any times you had to "brute force" it, or if you just happened to get the answer without really understanding some of the operations you used (this happened to me a lot in programming class).
Then you can go to office hours and just ask questions about what confuses you.
Here's an article I wrote a while back that may help a bit: collegeinfogeek.com/corson-technique/
I don't regret anything. Because everything I've done up until now, bad or good things made me who I am right now as a person. And nothing can take that way from me.
This is pretty great timing since I am starting college just now.
It comforts me to know that my career after uni doesn't really depend on it.. I still wanna do good though
Thank you for your great videos and content, they have inspired me and helped me with my life, very grateful!!!!
One regret among many: Spending my undergrad mostly confused and uncomfortable because I chose to spend almost 4yrs of my undergrad program on a subject I literally don't care about. I could never pinpoint why I was never happy instead I would spend hours daily reading manga, delving in depression, sometimes trying to improve my study techniques and listening to long hours of music (since scl days this was another way I would just block everything out and sth to help with my depression). Blocking everything has been a bad kind of coping mechanism I tend to turn to.
Well finally I'm studying something that is of more interest to me though I hope to be more involved in art (graphic illustrating and painting) in the future as that used to be a primary outlet for me at the beginning of the depression downward spiral tunnel.
Wow, thank you for the video! It insight me
I totally agree with you with everything you say but to add to one of your topics on dating mistakes, it is very true that when your looking for someone and if you go to places like bars with that only in mind (actually a problem with many men in todays society), chances are that it is not going to happen. Based on observations and from experience I believe that girls can sense when that's your sole purpose and they quickly find a way to get away. I had more chances when Im literally there to get drunk and have fun than when looking which I actually never do. I like to stick to academia and just let the right someone eventually cross paths with me.
Really feeling the "Beverage Entertainment" effect with Ice Coffee and just coffee in general. I don't really need the caffeine, but the feeling of having it somehow soothes this feeling of not being focused.
You inspire me... Thank you bro... Really appreciate what yo do... 😀👍👍
easier said than done. I appreciate the advice
ugh that internship one! learning to say no to opportunities especially when you're just starting off and in college is SO HARD.
Damn these videos are quality
You’re growing man🙌
That llama card is perfection
Great content Thomas.
Can you do a video on how you networked with employers, what to say to them and how to look for a job in general. Thanks
hello... I would REALLY appreciate it if you could expand more on 1. Ambition, Delusion, and burnout. I think I am experiencing the same thing and do not know what to do. I also did not get the advice from it as well other than the fact that maybe I should read less and pay attention more in class maybe? It would be great if you answered me here or maybe did a separate video on the 1st point. Thanks again for sharing this with us :)
You should check out his book 10 steps to earning awesome graded
Asking for help is definitely something I intend to make the most of now I'm doing postgrad
Thankfully i am already done with my energy drink addiction, because i worked at a shop where you couldn't drink the tap water and bottled water costs 3.95 (for a small bottle) and energy drinks are the cheapest thing to drink with only 1.- per can. I changed to black coffee for a "healther" option, and take a large bottle of water with me. Now i should reduce a bit how much coffee i drink, but i already feel a lot healthier than when i drank about 6-10 energy drinks each day.
Could you please make a video about how to study by yourself when there are no finals, no teachers, just you and a lot of information you need to discover
It's all about routine, habit, discipline and systems. Check out James Clear's website.
Great video, really good advice. Thank you!

dude where the hell did you study? lol
sounds nice
Thanks Thomas, this relates to me so much!
I love you, Thomas. You've been a big help in my life :)
1:10 this was my mistake this year, I managed to do it seriously for 1month more or less, then in the next 3 months my productivity decreased to this point when I totally dropped out of studying(through a internet course) to college. I worked full time(7am-5pm). 5am I waked up and watched one class, would go to work then during lunch I used to do some lessons, got home by 5:15 pm, 6pm-10pm watched more 4 classes. saturday and sunday 8am-12 more lessons.
Love that dope llama!!
You should try PTA (Physical Therapist Assistant) school. I'm averaging 4.5 to 5 hours of sleep a night. Teachers are telling us that you will not be able to read all the information given to you, then get mad at you for not reading over your reading assignments.
Thanks Thomas , great video!!!
Zero Fun and Burnout tend to be my biggest problems. I try to avoid those problems by spending some of my time hanging out with friends or playing video games. I’m really bad about taking advantage of the fun opportunities on campus though...
So far (this is my last semester), I mostly regret not taking full advantage of every opportunity available to me. Like, I could have exploited so many contacts I had, I could have talked to my professors about opportunities, etc. I took the hard route and used the internet to find everything.
Thanks for your great video. I am a senior in college but i already have lots of regrets about my college career.
That is a great piece.Thumbs up
Independent Learning Projects - one of my favorite retirement activities. I did have a good experience with your sponsor I have to say - good content... affordable. A lot of providers out there. Thanks Thomas. I'm going to share your dating advice with my 10 year old Granddaughter. I guess she hears a lot of chatter about this among her girlfirends at school. I'M NOT READY FOR THIS!
I love your videos. YOu are RIGHT ON.
