- Checking out a new Gibson Studio Model J45.
Probably one of the nicest Studio series acoustics I have played, and it looks pretty nice too. A terrific value if I say so myself.

Thanks for the vid Ian! I bought a J45 Studio in the natural colour. Such a warm, inspiring sound, which is well reflected in your video too! Great playing as always!
Sounds better than the j-45 standard mahogany to me.
I was lucky enough to find a 2006 SJ-150 in a local pawnshop a couple of months ago-love it ! Gibsons just have a unique sound.Your walnut J-45 not only sounds warm, but crisp also.Glad you showed the back of such a beautiful instrument!
I love walnut! Sounds great. Thank you..and I love your playing!
Excelent sound and wonderful playing
This is an excellent demo of this guitar. Great job man!
I love the sound of this guitar!
Yesterday I tried both the Rosewood and the Walnut version, and let me tell you this, the Walnut was rounder, fuller but at the same time with very crisp highs. And it was louder!
Amazing guitar, now I want it so bad haha
Wow that sounds beautiful
Excellent woody sound and very good guitar playing.
Great job on the video! What a beautiful, rich sound. Looks primo as well. Thanks!!!
Thanks Kevin!
Sounds great - fine for players who don't mind the flatter fretboard radius of the studio series. The no longer made J-15 was similar, (walnut back & sides) but with a traditional 12" fretboard radius and the standard J-45 dimensions. It would be interesting to compare the 2 guitars.
Really like the fingerpicking session Ian...nice!
I like this one sounds just right.
Man. I'm really enjoying this.
Great tone!
Beautiful sound 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Very nice Ian. Had never thought of buying a Gibson but that turned my head.
Hace unos años tuve la oportunidad de probar una Gibson J 45, más allá del audio que puedes escuchar en una grabación, la resonancia que produce y se siente al tocarla en persona es indescriptible, más de lo que se escucha.
Literally counting the days till it arrives Ian ❤️👌
I bought one just like this in 2019. Love the pickup. Sounds great plugged in. It has become my road guitar. Rugged and reliable.
That sounds very nice.
I've got one in a Walnut finish. Beautiful guitar, I'm often too nervous to pull out of the case.
Excellent demo video, you didn't talk, talk, and talk. You just played and showed the intrument the whole way through. 👍
Great sound..beutiful guitar..
I want one now! 😀👍🏽
nice playing! i agree phenomenal value - can you confirm which pickup this comes with? i hope its the VTC Element pickup rather than Fishman.
A sweet guitar to be sure. Sounding like a mahogany B and S albeit with a little less chime. But has clarity. I could own one of these.
This Gibson Studio Walnut appears to be a great versatile guitar. Not that stark, extremely dark J-45 Standard tone which we all love, but again, more versatile. Also, it seems like a better sounding and more cost effective Taylor 517 or 717. I may have consider getting one of these.
finally, someone who knows how to TUNE a guitar.. and how to mic it right, and play it well. great demo! :)
thank you!!
Love my walnut...rich, resonant, very playable, looks great ( ive got natural finish)
I guy who knows his stuff says to look out for J45s with the visibly wider grain on the spruce top. They often sound better. Did seem to be true for the ones I played...
I almost bought a J45 but got a Gibson Songwriter instead. To all of you who dream of getting one, save up and get one. Dream guitars are for you too! After all even if it costs you two or three grand, you spend more than that in a lifetime. Dreaming for Ferrari is a lot harder but this is a guitar and it's in your reach! So make it a goal and it will happen!
Love my songwriter. Great guitars and so under rated
Me again. The Songwriter is under rated ? It's Gibsons most popular guitar!@@mattcottrell3336
I bought one of these a few days ago . I removed the fishman pickup, put in a hardwood shim to make up the difference for the under saddle pickup, changed out the heavy grovers for , Gotoh SXN 510v white button tuners. Installed a Stew Mac no jack end pin, also switched out the bridge pins to rosewood. It’s now around an A half pound or more lighter and sounds absolutely awesome!! Going to put a Mojotone soundhole pickup in that I have ordered, I think it’s going to be great !
How do you like the rosewood pins? Was thinking of switching to bone, but rosewood sounds like it would complement the bridge nicely.
Guess Gibson was testing the market with the J15, and introduced J45 walnut, same time as they discontinued the J15.. Just love the sound og both those walnuts
great as usual...all the j 45 vids u use 12s dadarios??? lights? thanks
Hi Ian, was curious to know, with your excellent finger style playing have you ever considered a thumb pick? Excellent playing and keep doing more lesson videos. Thanks Rob
Hey Rob, I usually do play with a thumbpick, but for the purpose of these demos I stick to thumb only.
Best Acoustic Videos here on UA-cam! Is the built-in pickup usable?
Thanks for the kind words. The pickup is definitely usable. It's not top of the line but for most people will work just fine.
Just bought this ... purely based on your vid, it’s back ordered but will be worth the wait I hope :)
Congrats! How is it so far? Any experience with the regular mahogany j45? I just picked up a SJ-200 Studio walnut and love it.
I think walnut might be a little too brash and loud with spruce. I’d love to hear it with a cedar top.
I like it... Alot.
Sounds great in my car.. strange thing is the new 2024 is satin?
Great demos! How does the volume of this guitar compare to the standard j-45?
Pretty much the same
This acoustic is legit amazing. So woody and dry almost like a D-18 to my ears but not as soft and gentle in the trebles. I do prefer this over the J45 Standard.
I have a J45 Walnut from the custom shop. Foolish or not..I was looking for something in-between a Martin D28 and a standard J45. I'm
not sure if I got that..but let me tell you, with a new set of strings, this guitar is ridiculously good sounding. To my ears, not as woody as a standard J45 , and a little more bass (or rather different bass?) than a D28. Because of its versatility, studio efficiency, and evenness in tone across the board, I still think pound for pound the D28 is the king of all full size acoustic guitars, and the one that all others should be judged by . Having said that, my Gibson is a beautiful sounding and stunning looking guitar. I will also say that playability-wise nothing tops a properly set up Martin. You simply have a hard time putting them down. J45s are a little more clunkier feeling..but thats all preference.
Two bad ass guitars.
@ianmeadows Ian, I have a question for you. Your demos always sound incredible, especially on Gibson guitars, but my experience has been that Gibsons are not very consistent in tone. Good ones are phenomenal, but a good percentage of them sound sort of dead. Well made boxes, but lifeless sounding. Are you doing anything special to achieve such good tone out of the Gibsons you demo, or any other make for that matter? Always use fresh strings? Fresh setup/intonation adjustments etc? Is it in the microphone/post-processing? Or is it more that you simply choose the better sounding examples for your demos? I own a couple of great Gibson acoustics, and your channel encourages me to buy more, but then I play the same models in the store and find them uninspiring so I'm wondering if I'm falling victim to dead strings on in-store models or what. Thanks.
You have to play them. They always get better.
Gibson is certainly not known for their consistency. Recently we've been getting in a run of good ones, maybe thats a sign their QC ia getting better. I would be hesitant to buy a Gibson acoustic from GC, and I'm not just saying that as a guy who works for an indy guitar shop, just as a player. They're usually poorly set up with dead strings and have been thrashed on by many other people before you get to it, IME.
Store shop owners in the UK tell me that Gibson acoustics have become much more consistent in the last coupla years. The J45s and Hummingbirds I checked out recently have been really excellent. I'm a Martin guy whose eyes have started wandering towards Gibsons. The beautiful way you play 'em, Ian, has contributed to that...
Thinking about jumping the gun on one of these as opposed to the standard mainly because you’re saving the better part of $900. Anyone own or have demo’d both models? I feel as though I wouldn’t mind the reduced bass because I do like a bit more punch.
Hey Ian.
Did you notice whether the sound was lacking at all due to the thinner depth of the J45 Walnut Studio.guitar?
I would like a J15 as I love the sound, but pretty scarce these days.
Thanks Ian, great demos!
they don't lack at all. its less boomy in the Bottom end than a standard j45. very even tonally and still gets loud. the walnut works really well on these. better than the rosewood version IMO.
@@aaronrobinson3587 Thanks Aaron.
How is the neck on the J-45 studio? Modern? Easy to play?
Nice middle ground. Easy to play. Not thin or thick.
You should compare this with a standart.
How does this compare to a standard?
In sound, not as dry. Punchier and tighter in the bottom end. Not as boomy. Balanced. Sounds like a j45 with a bit of high pass filter on it.
Nice but to me sounds a little more boomy than a regular J45. Wonderful playing as always.
i come watch this video when i don't feel like practicing. one day she will be mine. have to earn it first, tho.
I think this burst sounds sweeter than the natural ones you have played before. I was going to order a natural as they are currently in stock but now I am hesitating. Could be worth waiting for a burst if it is a difference in sound. But I guess it could be just natural variations of the individual guitars. Tough decisions to be done. 🙂
I have a feeling it just varies guitar to guitar, no matter what ginish they're spraying. This guitar is excellent, and I've played a bunch of Studio models.
@@ianmeadows6351 Ok good to hear that. Then I guess it's just the looks to consider and a price difference of about 100usd. Thanks for the great demos you do. The best on youtube I think. And with very inspiring guitar playing.
