My go to go for big ones is usually a spook, plopper or ned Rig. Used to get em on jigs more but hasnt been doing the trick last couple seasons. Glad to see you take the skirt off your buzzbait also in that clear water
The Plopper has put more big fish in the kayak for me than any other bait in this video but sometimes that bite just ain't there. I've experienced the same with jigs the last couple seasons.
Trying to do some more river fishing this year. Exactly the video I was looking for as I have been struggling at the river my last few trips. Thank you for the tips
I have recently found your channel a couple of months ago. You are doing a great job. This is another good video. Keep up the good work. I appreciate your efforts.
That means a lot! I'm definitely trying to improve with every video and I really do appreciate it when someone takes the time to watch something and enjoy it. More to come as the weather warms...
Great points will be trying the buzzbait w no skirt instead of the whopper plopper keitech finnese jigs are my favorite your channel is my favorite for river fishing not much channels like yours!
A 1/32 1/8 1/16 oz white crappie jig with a white grub. Then trophy bass by procure I've caught nice smallies and descent large mouth. A Berkeley choppo. 😊❤
Awesome video man. I really like the tip about removing the skirt on the buzz bait and swim jigs. Pretty cool so see another audiophile river smalljaw youtuber.
Thanks man! Glad you got something out of the video. Good to know we're on the same team! I used to do a lot of recording and mixing so that gear can come in handy for other things. But I'm forgetful and I forgot to record some takes in my DAW so I had to revert back to the GoPro audio for the video 😅
The swivels were used only for ease of use in recording the footage of the baits. I generally don't use swivels at all on the river, just braid to fluorocarbon leaders.
Awesome information, made me realize that I have not given the buzzbait the attention it deserves! I Have heard of the dark sleeper for places like Erie but never thought of using it in my area because we don't have gobie but sounds like it's worth a try anyway. BTW those are definitely some massive smallies you catch!
This year I finally let it shine in the river and i was impressed. Even without gobies, the sleeper will still kill em! I like it even in early winter because it's so subtle. Thanks for the kind words!
I'm wanting to make a video on this but I've been so backed up with editing. If I had to choose 3, they'd be a jerkbait, finesse football jig, and a swimbait on some kind of stand up jig head.
I love the Susky. In most places, I stick with the 3" model and Mutsugoru color which is mostly brown with some yellow accents. With the current out there, my minimum weight would be a 1/2 oz to make sure it gets down to the bottom.
@@RivermanTV- thanks a ton. Is the 1/2 ounce prone to hanging up? I just know the river has a lot of hangs in the rock ledges so just curious about techniques to keep from losing these baits specifically.
@@basandy13 No problem. My main issue with the sleeper is bringing it over wood. It tends to not hang too bad in rock. I know some of those ledges out there can be pretty nasty though. I don't think anything will make it through that kind of thing 100% of the time. But as long as you're not tossing into laydowns along the bank, I don't you need to worry too much.

What weight do you prefer for the buzzbait? I swear by the plopper but would like to have something else to throw for top water
@@mitcholson9795 3/8 is usually my go to
Alright thanks. I've been watching your videos all morning, giving me the itch to get out. What state you fishing in?
@@mitcholson9795 Been fishing in IL and WI so far this year.
Ah okay. I'm in northwest Wisconsin and was thinking the water was a little too cold yet but maybe I should try to hit some local rivers

Happy to help!
Thanks for the tips. Enjoying your videos to get me through this winter.
Happy to help you get through the tough times! Not long now and we'll be enjoying spring fishing.
What's that switchboard looking contraption you got going on there ????

I've got Keitechs on my to buy list for the upcoming season. Plenty more river content coming up this year 🤙

I'm new to river small mouths. What is a "swim bait"?
Noticed a snap swivel on your Dark Sleeper. You don’t tie direct?

From my experience depends on the river and time of year but for the most part it be a some type of jig
You already know we are #jigsquad
I would say a paddle tail swim bait will produce river smallies 90 percent of the time
Agreed.
You had 666 subscribers... so I had to change that.
Good lookin' out, Mike
I like the buzzbait no skirt idea . will be trying
Absolutely, definitely try and report back.
Link to Swimbait and favorite color?
I don’t know if you will see this but what would your choice of baits for mid late fall?? Thx

I fish in the Susquehanna River in PA. I’ve noticed your Dark Sleeper bait. Do you have a recommendation for size and color?

great video, no tube bait though lol
The tube is a timeless classic, I have to give you that
What river do you mean the fish
River smallmouth = smallmouth that live in rivers exclusively
Nikko hellgrammite....now in a 4.25" version.
I definitely want to try it this year.
Give a spin bomb 60 or 75 a try Ive had better luck with those than ploppers
I've got a lot of confidence in the plopper but I'll have to check those out.
