Another hit from Carole King, her demo of this is fabulous. The Monkees were a terrific band who got bad press at the time for not writing their own material as an unfair comparison to The Beatles. Dolenz was one the best pop rock voices of his time. ✌️

Another fun one to listen to is "That was then, This is now." It was their comeback single after the kids in the 80's rediscovered them after MTV began airing reruns of the Monkees in block episodes. The inspiration for the song was when Carole King and husband moved into a suburban housing community in West Orange, NJ. Interestingly, the name comes from Pleasant Valley Way, a road that stretches most of the way through West Orange and into Verona. Another story is that it's about a mental institution, which would have been Greystone, which it wasn't.
Other Monkees songs you should give a listen to are "Mary, Mary", "Look Out, Here Comes Tomorrow", "The Door Into Summer", "Words", "The Girl I Knew Somewhere", "Randy Souse Git", "What Am I Doing Hanging Round", "Papa Gene's Blues", "You Just May Be The One". First off the town I lived in only had 3 styles of houses Rancher, Colonial or Cape Cod. Almost at the moment the song came on the boys band ( last name begins with "C") in the house behind started practicing, Mr. "V" next door started mowing his lawn. A few minutes later Mrs. "L" across the street was showing off her roses to another neighbor. And my dad was the Mr. Green with a t.v. in every room. I stood up and yelled "Oh my God! I live in Pleasant Valley!" It was a real eye opener!

As a group thrown together for a TV series, they weren't usually allowed to really play their own instruments as they wanted to. The concept was two actors who could sing and two singers who could act. Each was picked to play a role similar to The Beatles and they played a variety of styles to appeal to a wide audience.
    * Davy Jones (the short British guy) could play guitar, tamborine, and a little bit of drums. He was an actor who could sing and was signed on for his Pop Sound and was 'The Cute One'
    * Mike Nesmith (the tall - 'wool cap') played guitar and bass guitar (his mother invented liquid white out and he went on to create MTV & CMT and owned major stock in the Country Music industry - by far the most financially successful one). He was a musician first and actor second. He was the Country Sound and played the role of 'The Smart One'.
    * Mickey Dolenz (the drummer) only played drums a little, and had his set up left-handed, even though he was right-handed, and keyboard. He was often placed on drums and became one of the first Drummer/Singers. He was also an Actor turned Singer. He was actually really good at scat and could also do a pre-rap style flow. Check out 'Going Down' and 'Randy Scouse Git' by them.
    * Peter Tork - on the keyboard - was an amazing musician! He played 8 instruments and was the only one allowed to play on their Album Recording Sessions for their first couple of albums. He was a Folk Musician with a following in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district and New York's Greenwich Village Folk Scene. He played the role of 'The Shy One'. After The Monkees, he became a High School Teacher.

The Monkees were one of hundreds of groups and artists who didn't play their own instruments on the records they released. That was a fact that they had to come to deal with. But remember, these four guys were not a rock group when they started. They were each individually cast for roles in an NBC-TV primetime comedy series in which they played a fictitious rock band. So when the producers of the TV show decided it would be good if they released actual songs that could be played on the radio, they called on some of the most prolific hitmaking songwriters and musicians to collaborate to help prop them up and make them seem legit. Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart wrote some of their hits. And all the instrumentation on their songs were played by L. A. studio musicians who came to be known as The Wrecking Crew. I've mentioned this to you guys for a while, but you really owe it to yourself to spend the 90 minutes or so that it would take to watch the documentary on The Wrecking Crew that was produced by the son one one of the Wrecking Crew's most prolific members. I promise, you won't be sorry. Here: ua-cam.com/video/-ZgBexrZvM0/v-deo.html By the way, Pleasant Valley Sunday was part of a two-sided hit single by the Monkees. Having seen every episode of the show and owning every one of their albums on the original vinyl (handed down from my mother), I could sit here typing suggestions of The Monkees for quite a while, but I always try to limit myself to suggesting only one song per video. That said, there are two of their songs that I am having SO MUCH TROUBLE choosing between! I think for now that I'll go with the one that it's less likely anyone else will recommend. The thing about the Monkees is that Nesmith played Bass and Guitar, Tork played Guitar and Keyboards...Both were familiar with drums but didn't want to play them. Davy Jones knew how to play drums but since he was short they thought he would be hidden by the drum kit. Mickey who sang on this song was a guitar player was taught to play drums by Peter Tork for the pilot. You can actually see some concert footage of Davy on the drums while Mickey sings. Thus, the lineup for the TV show most frequently featured Nesmith on guitar, Tork on bass, Dolenz on drums and Jones as a frontman, singer and percussionist, although this lineup did not correspond to the members' musical strengths. Tork was a more experienced guitar player than Nesmith, while Nesmith had trained on the bass. While Jones had a strong lead voice and did sing lead on several Monkees recordings, Dolenz's voice is regarded, particularly by Nesmith, as distinctive and a hallmark of the Monkees' sound.

It kind of felt like going to a class reunion without the cringy stuff... it was comfortable and brought back a lot of great memories (and helped build a lot of new ones, too).
As far as song recommendations, there are SO many! "The Girl I Knew Somewhere", "Goin' Down", "Mary, Mary", "Papa Gene's Blues", "Shades of Gray", and definitely "Riu Chiu" (a special request for around Christmas time).
I would also like to recommend that you react to a song by one of The Monkees post show career as an solo artist. The song is called "Rio" and the singer/composer is Michael Nesmith. (That's the tall skinny guy playing lead guitar.)
By the way, he also wrote a song called "Different Drum" that was recorded by Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Ponies.

    My absolute favorite is
Goin Down! Psychedelic, Funky,Jazz,Scat,Tells a bluesy style story about love, loss and acceptance, if that makes sence, absolute banger and very different from the usual pop/rock/ballad, t.v style songs, it's one you either love or hate, but I adore it.

Love this song. The phrase "Pleasant Valley Sunday" has become part of my internal lexicon to describe a nice day.

The lyrics were by Gerry Goffin with the music by his then-wife Carole King. But Carole admits the guitar riff was from Mike Nesmith and their producer Chip Taylor. When Carole performed this song live in the 70's and 80's she had her guitarist play this riff.

My favorite Monkees song. Listen to that bass line, Jay! Once I started covering this song with my band we all gained a new appreciation for this song (and The Monkees) and just how musically creative it is. And FUN to play! Mike Nesmith (on lead guitar) and Peter Tork (on keyboards) were the only Monkees to actually play instruments on this recording. Mickey Dolenz and Davey Jones were actors who sang but didn't play any instruments or have a professional musical background...unlike Nesmith and Tork, who were actually well established musicians before becoming actors for The Monkees TV show. Dolenz did eventually learn to play the drums and the Monkees toured extensively with all of them playing and singing.

who can not like the Monkees? Each song is full of fullness of life and is a feel good song. I can imagine many parents say the kids still dont understand and vice versa! I was only about six when this 30 minute new show came on and i guess my folks didnt mind it too much else they wouldnt have watched it. It was so unlike any other show because of the hip music! And similar to the Marx brothers in humor although i had never heard of the marx brothers then and besides that these Monkees really were cute and funny. Much more lively than the Dick Van Dyke show. I they were my first crush. i begged mom to buy the fan mags and i cut out the monkees pictures and put them up in my little closet door.

I remember the Monkees were coming to Philly to play, and my sister wanted to go to see them so bad. We lived under one of the flight paths of the Philly airport, and every time a plane went over my sister would scream and cry because she thought that plane was carrying the Monkees.
