Now this is a very thorough job of documenting what happened on the cape. My guess is that building codes changed over time and the structural, siding and roofing damage that we see on some buildings versus the the other more recently built buildings that seem to have escaped damage is the story. Don't use asphalt shingles for roofing, use metal; don't use vinyl siding, use hardiplank, secure the upright post support to the building in accordance with the higher level of code.
FEMA recommendations suggests this: "requirements of ASCE 24-05 should be met for all coastal construction (both residential and non-residential). Since that code was put into place there is now a belief that you can build a house that can withstand even what Michael brought. I am not saying that this is a good thing but if you own a home on the Cape, you would be foolish to cheap out when building a home when the additional cost might only be $20,000 to $30,000 more.

My Favorite RV spot @ 3:11 is gone and will not be rebuilt. My reservation for this year was canceled. Hopefully CSB and the surrounding areas will recover to its once unspoiled charm and beauty.

At 7:41 you can see how the state park got cut in half just before the camp ground. That sucks. I really liked staying there.

Day and night compared to Mexico Beach. City is changing the building codes before the reconstruction happens.

Gotta love seeing houses on _wood_ piles for what they cost (cheap to buy, but cost more when they need to be replaced every few decades, break like ductile iron pipes and splinter like crazy), instead of tougher *fiberglass* (hollow which means pipes and any wiring can be run through it to the ground or just above ground for water connections, resilient as they will flex like steel until they eventually crack unlike steel which will just bend/crumple, not prone to issues like wood) piles which are more resilient. Only a matter of time until those wood piles break apart from degradation (drying out/wood borer attack) that fiberglass is not prone/susceptible to.
Varying amounts of damage to each home, not as bad as other places like Mexico Beach which got hit harder and damaged many more homes/houses.

The ocean wants its beach back. The newer Houses held up very well. Most just roof and siding damage.

It's clear that better building codes have improved the safety of these buildings. Less stuff flying off means less stuff going through your Windows. Everyone has to do it or there are still too many projectiles. There are ways around these natural disasters but they take time and money and proper management of resources.

The best solution is to stop building directly on the coast. Cape San Blas wasn't a victim of storm surge, like Mexico Beach was.
In any event, if you own gulf front property, you are a millionaire. And, your insurance is subsidized by the sensible Florida residents who don't live ON THE SHORE. Whatever damage they received was paid for.

Great job builders, the structures did very well.
Haters, storms are not new, look into history, a Farmers Almanac is a good start for facts. The government did not do this, rich people are not making you poor. Victim hood releases one from bad decisions and behavior.
I was there two weeks before storm, then last week. Gulf County is lovely with terrific, Patriotic citizens. I am actively trying to figure out how to move there from Santa Rosa County....way too much growth here!!! It's crazy.
