- In this video I build an electric Hawaiian guitar (lap steel) out of driftwood I found on the beach in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
This is my first video, I have never done video editing before, and am very happy that you're here checking it out. I'm planning on getting better, and have lots of really cool projects to show you, from vintage restorations, to full custom instruments builds. Thanks!
Visit my instagram: / notaluthier
outro song is from: hymm.bandcamp.com/album/hmmm
*updates/mistakes:
-The knife is a Mora not an Opinel
-“Flat head” screws are actually called slot heads
-Dr. Frankenstein’s first name was Victor

Ted told me to come watch this, and I'm not about to ignore Ted.
Ted gives great advice!
I'm here for the same reason, Ted sed to.
This is the guy that Ted was talking about?!? It just popped into my feed and I’m checking it out. Turns out it was recommended by one of my favorite channels. Very cool! Good stuff man!
I even found it before I watched Teds video, but I guess thats just YT alghoritm ;)
Great chanel, great guy, cant wait for more videos!
Ha me too!
To other viewers, I just visited Levon here at his shop. This dude has some serious luthier skills. I was blown away at the quality and creativity of some of his builds. Stay tuned to this channel for some off the hook stuff down the road.
Thanks Mark! It was great to meet you.
Not a Luthier, but an artist. We love the creativity of this guy!
Ooooh you cut like you have socialized healthcare.
😂 is it THAT obvious that I won’t spend my life in debt if I get an owie?
@@Notaluthier Fell out of my chair at the original comment, and now I have to sell my house. Thanks.
@@JerkofAllTradesTLH pretty sure you can just sue the chair manufacturer and make up your losses 😜
This is the funniest thread I've read in the last 14 minutes.
Ted sent me here. I'm glad he did.
I can’t wait to be a cool dad like you when I grow up
I subscribed just to watch holes being drilled. 🎉. And this video meets my minimum daily requirement of holes being drilled. Daily.
Breathing the solder is sort of a side quest to the man in the black hat.
Sans Benadryl.
TW was right. This was worth watching.
Yes, this is quite sublime.
Twoodfrd send me here!
I'm not disappointed!
+100 for the Wayne and Garth end!!! 😀
Party on
Finding this channel was the highlight of my day! I truly hope you keep making videos. Because I will keep watching said videos. I appreciate the balance between humor, information, outdoor shots, sad dog face, and great background music. Would easily be a go to channel for me. Suggesting it to all my gee-tar nerd friends. Cheers brother! You got a great thing going
Thanks! Glad you found it!
I was more expecting delta blues, not island vibes from your lap steel, but with it made out of driftwood, it does make sense.
Your videos are the perfect antidote for the chaos that is my life lately! Thanks brother!
Glad you enjoy them! Thanks!
The video and the ending credits were really cool!
🙏🏼 thanks!
Doctor Victor Frankenstein is the creator of the monster.
I am an artist and luthier. I respect Ted ! Plus! Ted mentioned an old friend, Fred carillon! Very cool!
Really enjoy your work on this project & looking forward to seeing more projects!
I was watch in on a big screen.😂
Bro I hope this is the start to a long and prosperous YT channel! Loved it, it's perfect.
Thanks!
That was a metric ton’a’fun!
Fun build, sounds good!
Favourite type of screws: the one shots, you get one shot to get the desired effect. Usually they are the drillbit rachethead kind.
Notable side effect: you get to use choice words, inappropiate tools, preferably in the wrong size and...play with IFO's > Indentified Flying Objects! Nice edit, keep it up!
It says Resilience on the back, so that's a cool name for it
S.S. Resilience
Dr. Frankenstein's first name was Victor.
The monster had a name as well; Adam.
Oooh bonus points. Adam!
Fantastic !! Enjoyed the whole video...build on !
I was waiting for a reference to Driftwood by Travis. But this really flotsam my boat, but also strangely jetsam my goat.
The guy who builds the monster is called Victor. Good fun man.
12:00 - Your daughter’s name is ‘loopholes’? Very Zappa of you, sir.
TW sent me and I’m glad, nice vid.
Hahahah perhaps my formative years shouldn’t have included so many psychedelics
I love this video! Well done, make more.
Thanks! Will do
Whats funny is that i didnt watch that video where ted recommended i watch this guy, but from generally watching ted the algorithm just gave me this guy too
Quality entertainment from start to finish. I like hex screws although you rarely see them on much of anything. Looking forward to seeing what you get up to next!
Very cool! A bit of driftwood, some old parts and a lot of ingenuity and you have a fantastic lapsteel guitar! Well done I look forward to seeing your next project.
Thank you UA-cam algorithm for sending you my way. I have nothing but time for this kind of content.
Insanely jealous of the sheer amount of driftwood you have at your disposal

Thanks and welcome! I am definitely lucky…other beaches, even in my area, aren’t as forthcoming with the driftwood as the one closest to my house!
Ted sent me.
same lol
You make it sound like a threat... 😄
also 🤗❤
me2
we talkin bout our uncle Ted?
Another sent by Ted, but I didn't expect to see a beach I recognize from spending many hours over the past couple of decades enjoying it!
Well hey there neighbor!
I heard a voice in my head. It said come here. I realized it was Ted. He said you'd bring good cheer.
Please don't ban me...
Loved it. Abysmal inadequacy is good for me so keep it up!
great way to start my day.. oh.. it rhymes... (thanks Ted!)
T25 is my favorite screw head :)
Ted Woodford sent me, and I'm glad he did, this was a lot of fun.
Go Levon!
Hell yeah!
Thanks for posting. And thank Ted.
Robertson is my favourite screw head because of Canadian bias. Here from Ted's recommendation. Watching from Port Alberni on the island. Keep up the good work
Beautiful, relaxing, and hilarious video! Also, Faceful of Crotch would be a great band name 😂 Cheers!!
Hahaha thanks! The faceful of crotch band name is open to anyone who wants it 😅
Ted sent me here as well, 10/10 not disappointed!
P.S.: Sounds bloody brilliant!!! Take that tonewood snobs!
This could be described as being delightful. I will tell others, should some come by but I suspect my video recommendations are generally ignored or forgotten, as they usually are with me . I'm glad I listened to Ted 's though.
Sent by Ted. Picked up a ton of valuable woodworking tips. Gotta say, those old 60s Teisco pickups sound great on anything.. I mean, you could just slap one on a piece of trash, and voila... er..
Hahahah, exactly!
Nice stuff. Looking forward to more. Yeah, Ted sent me too.
Totally agree with the dome top flat head brass screw…
cool stuff 😄 Have built a few guitars myself but never from driftwood or rustic old woods.
Thanks for sharing youre day with me
Ted Woodward mentioned to see your site. Excellent video!
Such a splendid video, I watched this after the 'Methstang' build - Great to see the beach on the island too #lovelymemoriesofvisitingvancouverisland
Thank you! I will try and find ways to include my surroundings whenever I can in future vids. It’s such a gorgeous place
@@Notaluthier Beautiful indeed !
My partners uncle lives on the Island , we loved the beaches there. So many logs and wood washed up. That was a great find for the laptop Hawaiian guitar.
Great videos , the Methstang refurb was fantastic. I look forward to the next video/post.
Clover Point! I've spent many happy hours flying kites there, and walking the beaches. /sent on a recommendation from twoodfrd
Nice! I’ve only been here 8 years but Dallas road beach is a treasure, especially when it’s empty 😂.
I can see why Ted enjoyed your video🤣!
any guitar that can give you a splinter is a good guitar XD
And tetanus to boot!
Buy, or steal, some spade bits. You'll get to keep your thumb. The Forstener bit you have, is for a wood lathe.
Yeah, usually it’s in my drill press. Cutting corners rarely works. I will dig out my spade bits
I think it says “Pesilence”, ie a misspelling of pestilence. Very metal.
Or maybe pez-ilience. The strength of small rectangular candies
So when are we going to see this lap steel on twoodfrd's channel for some reason?
Hahahha, well it is possibly on its way to Ontario, so the odds are going up quickly
Dude! You're groovy bruh 👍😁
Well this was good fun. Looking forward to more build vids.
Thanks Rob!
Love a vlog!!!
I be dropping fat vlogs
Squoze is very definitely, 100%, a word. If it isn’t it should be. 👍
Consensus reached!
Ted sent me, and I was not disappointed.
Master Woodford was correct, this has been an entertaining watch.
Great creativity, vision and skills continue to unfold, Levon … keep on keepin’ on, bro ~!~ hi to novi too … 🙏🏼❤️🦅“uncle” armand : from the other shore ~!~
Hello Uncle Armand! How nice to have your presence here!
Hmmm another Canadian, all I can say is my condolences.
I would call it the niftiest jack plate I've ever seen. I need to finish rebuilding my lap steel and find a good tutor.
Ted sent me toooooooooooooooooooooo
Wow, great editing
Too kind! Thank you!
Dr. Frankenstein's 1st name in the 1931 movie was Henry. Played by Colin Clive "It's ALIVE!!"
That’s interesting! I just looked it up and I guess since the book he was named Victor
Recommended by Ted Woodford so have another subscriber. I particularly liked the latent tetanus traps you left in there, very rock'n'roll!
Yep. Uncle Ted's thumbs-up will be sending a LOT of people here, I think. 🙂
That’s awesome @twoodfrd is definitely my favourite luthiery channel
🎉
Good stuff! Looking forward to more videos!
Like many others, Mr Ted sent me. Excellent vibe; worth the sub, IMHO. Sadly, think the trading name ‘Driftwood Guitars” is already taken, though you do have infinitely better hair than that bloke…
Nice!! Feeling inspired to make something now!
That’s the best! ❤
It isn't the title of "Luthier" that matters...It's the Music. RESPECT!
Gotta admit, I’ve never even seen a lute in person .
Gnarly lapsteel dude.. ✌️
Bro! That is some whimsy sh*t bro! Like, totally magical!
Fire bad!!
I almost squeezed that reference in!
Can't wait for your bible!!
You could be the only one!
LOL dome top flat head screw.
Why does this bring back memories of Red Green?
Are you saying the women don’t find me handsome? 😂
@@Notaluthier Keep your stick on the ice 👍
Dr. Frankenstein's first name is Victor.
Just watched with Aesop and Finn. Enthralling. They like the swears. I had to explain the Bill Clinton joke. Just glad it was about inhaling and not the other thing...
Yeah, my references are VERY dated, not sure anyone under 40 will get that one.
@@Notaluthier I did not have lead-based soldering relations with that pickup
Quite the fun project! I should really try this some time. Although the internal jaws on the chuck on my eggbeater drill popped apart. Not quite sure how to get them back together....
Oh, and technically, you are referring to slotted head screws. Flat head means countersunkso they are flat with the material when installed (yeah, I know, nitpicking details 😁)
I really need to start making videos of my projects too.
Whoops! Slottttttttttted. Got it.
I love it, I love you
Love you too Davie baby
That was an exquisite video. I'm extremely envious of the amount of drift wood you have access to, more importantly, my favourite screw to use is a Robertson drive but I love the the of a counter sunk, brass, flat head screw
Thanks! Yes! The wood selection on this, closest beach to my house is actually fairly exceptional. I frequent other beaches in the area that are only good for my mental health, and not for my wood collection.
Robertson is a great utility screw, but I can’t see ever using one on a guitar build (having said that I did add about a dozen Robertson wood screws to my last flotsam build)
@@Notaluthier keep the videos coming dude, you're onto a good thing
You are a enius! Awesome first video. You earned my subscription. Sadly the letter that sounds like jee on my keyboard is broken so you are a enius!
So reat of you to watch and comment, have an ood day!
Use the cutter on the pliers ‘backwards’ to strip wires…be gentle though…
Hi! I'm the daughter of the person who called you a enius. We watched your video toether! I think you're a enius too. Sadly, the letter that sounds like jee on my keyboard is also broken..
Awwwe thanks! Hopefully y’all don’t use gmail!
Subscribing as prescribed by Ted. And cos i laughed out loud as I got a face full of *you know what. 😅
Thanks and welcome! (And you’re welcome for the faceful 🤣)
(Dr Frankenstein's first name is Victor. )
if ted sez “look” it will be worth it.
I'm a torx man myself.
Torx srews all day every day. Regards from Ted.
Victor.
i'm so glad i found this channel, a breath of fresh air for once on yt!
Thanks and welcome!
My understanding is Victor was his first name.
Ted sent me. Was not disappointed.
Ive thought about a driftwood guitar as I live opposite you by Liverpool 😊
I harvest a bunch of red cedar here for acoustic instruments. Always very satisfying! Liverpool England, or Nova Scotia? Or some third option?
@Notaluthier 🫡 England sir! 🇬🇧 sadly because of the water companies more likely a fatburge than red cedar 🤐 most of our wood is root balls or flotsam and jetsam for some reason 🤔 is there much movement in the wood? Does the salinity effect the gluing? Many thanks Mark.
@@markgordon4368 the wood, though sometimes waterlogged is usually fully “dry” meaning not “green” thus is a ready to use right away. Salt doesn’t seem to be an issue.
Spongebob!
