The train station was for the old Boston Westchester train up into Westchester. You can see the rails go past the Dyre station into Mt. Vernon. Dyre to E180 is the original line.
Correction, it was ACTUALLY the Bronx Park Terminal (not the 3rd Avenue one btw), also called 180th Street - Bronx Park, which was demolished in 1954. The Third Avenue Elevated stopped being served in 1973, and was demolished in 1977, but there is absolutely no evidence that there was a connection between the 2 and 5 and the TAL at West Farms.
I live close to the Bronx, and the 2, 4, and 5 likes are basically just life. Yes, between 180th street and Dyre Avenue it feels like MetroNorth, because this part used to be a proper train line, part of the New York Westchester & Boston Railway, with service to White Plains (Westchester Avenue) and Port Chester on the New Haven line. That is also why the stations look so differently. It operated from 1912 to 1937. In 1940 the city bought the Bronx part of the line to become part of the subway.
You can also see the 9th Avenue elevated underground the stairways lead to a station that was part of the Culver Shuttle run from 9th Avenue to ditmas Av it was part of the b.m.t. Culver line signed as a 5 the shuttle service was discontinued in 1975. In the 1980s it got demolished.
