    Chris, your music choice is just so good. Make a European Roads playlist for when I'm driving on the A1. :)

    Fantastic video as always! The Netherlands has some of the best quality expressways in the whole world. Reducing speed limits due to nitrogen levels sounds pretty crazy lol - makes me wonder how much people actually comply...

    According to the rules of driving that Europe has, when the bus is parked at the bus station or stands on the road on, every driver is obliged to slow down just for things like this, no matter how many lanes there are in the direction of travel.

    Ik denk dat dit namelijk veel irritaties met betrekking tot inhalen wegneemt bij veel weggebruikers, aangezien iemand die sneller is dan jij, jou dan altijd ook nog kan inhalen.
    Graag hoor ik van anderen wat jullie hier van vinden. Maar houd het graag wel netjes, we hoeven niet meteen op elkaar te gaan schelden als we het oneens zijn 😁.

    What's the link between forcing car speed reduction and housing construction?

    • @EuropeanRoads
      @EuropeanRoads  3 роки тому +6

      Both contribute marginal amounts to nitrogen deposits in the soil. A court ruling stated that any increase was unacceptable, so they got a 0.1% margin (in theory) by lowering the speed limit to 100 km/h during the day, so housing construction could restart. The Netherlands has a huge shortage of houses.

    • @etbadaboum
      @etbadaboum 3 роки тому +1

      @@EuropeanRoads How can housing can contribute to increasing nitrogen in the soil? That baffles me.

    • @EuropeanRoads
      @EuropeanRoads  3 роки тому +4

      @@etbadaboum Houses emit some NOx (heated by gas) and during construction. This is very trivial, but it becomes a problem when any increase is ruled to be unacceptable. The main contributor is farming but addressing that takes years. Pretty much all construction in the Netherlands was halted after that ruling.

      What is of note is that the Netherlands are the second-largest exporter of agricultural goods worldwide (after the USA). And this is not in relative terms: it's an absolute measurement. So there's is this relatively small European country, which exports more agricultural goods than Germany, France, Italy, Russia, China, Brazil...
      It's a point of pride for the Dutch, but while all those goods are exported, the nitrous oxides that are produced by farming are not. They all stay in the Netherlands, and that's the Netherlands have a far greater nitrous oxide problem than any other European nation.
      This in itself would not have meant a problem per se: just ignore it and business as usual. Those couple of hamsters that are at threat can bugger off to Germany. But the Netherlands had previously committed themselves in international treaties to not increase emissions. So an NGO sued the government about this - and they won.
      The farmers, meanwhile, had held some very visible protests: blocking motorways, taking their tractors to the seat of government, etc. And they largely had the public's sympathy. So the government lowered the maximum speed on motorways as a measure. Personally, though, I doubt the figure of 0.1%. It's probably closer to 0.5% to 1%, which is still not a lot, but it's a factor of 5 to 10, so that's significant.
      But there's no scientific basis for any of this, neither for the claims that there's a significant reduction, nor for those that it doesn't make a difference. The first link I tried when googling was a site that looked decent enough, until you notice the dodgy spelling and you know that you have to be very, very careful with any claims made there.

    The nitrogen reduction stuff is so over exeggerated. Our neighbouring countries don't even have that problem, but for some reason we do. the 0.1% or whatever does not make a difference

    Dit stukje is echt Nederland waardig.
    Geen 2 rijstroken meer.. minimaal 3x3 anders is het geen snelweg meer. Nu nog de A27. De A1 is niet eens zo druk als de A27 en toch verbaast het mij dat deze verbreed wordt.

    • @jordikerkhoven3191
      @jordikerkhoven3191 3 роки тому +3

      Dat klopt toch echt niet met betrekking tot 2x2 wegen in Nederland die volgens jou geen snelwegen meer moeten zijn, want verbreden bij tunnels en bruggen gaat niet zo makkelijk en zijn nog genoeg 2x2 snelweg delen, die echt wel Nederland waardig zijn. Echter ben ik het er wel mee eens dat sommige van die delen echt nodig een verbreding nodig. (Kijk naar jou, A50 tussen Ewijk en Paalgraven en A73 tussen Ewijk en Neerbosch.)
