Ditto! I bought a 71 plate P6 3500 four years ago, whilst my long term classic was having a bare metal respray. I did intend to sell the Rover after a couple of years. I quickly grew to adore it, and I will not sell it. Fabulous piece of engineering, second only to the XJ6 in my humble opinion. A genuine British masterpiece!
I've owned and worked on Rover V8s for 35 years, and have rebuilt a few and dismantled lots. I couldn't agree more with this. I've yet to strip a well used one which hasn't had the issues you've shown. They generally will keep running and sound OK when they're worn, but they get very lazy. You forgot to mention worn big ends and rockers and shafts, also ubiquitous.
I have stripped and rebuilt 3 4.6 rv8s for my seight, they were bad but not as bad as that one. Cleaning the engine parts is monotonous, I find it more taxing than building the engine like you say. I bought a cheap full size Bosch dishwasher from gumtree for £40, best value for money tool I ever bought. With modification to the tray it will hold a v8 block no bother and it works a treat. The parts come out dry and warm too. Just need to watch the steel parts for flash rusting. Good videos on the rv8 too.
Informative and great narrative, felt like I was in the garage with you....being from Perth West Australia that's impressive. Nice P4 looking for some tlc in the background.
Just found your channel, loving the vlogs would love a P5 or a P6 3500s.my parent’s next door neighbour has bought and restored a few of these. They are one Uber cool car.when I was 18 I nearly bought one of him p6 3500s manual in British racing green with black leather interior.my dad talked me out of if.I ended up with a MK2 Escort 1600 sport with a knackered Engine so I fitted a 1760 x flow engine, and lowered and updated the suspension.
That engine was literally in the same condition as mine, was planning on just a clean up but have ended up rebuilding after the mains were down to the copper. Big ends and cam wasn't to bad though and used the hot pressure at work to clean then removed the oilway plugs to clean the gunky oilways 👍
they were a nice running engine but a soft engine at the same time...all gone here in ireland ..didnt work on one in years.. just sayn...great vid thanks.
Shame to hear they are all gone in Ireland. We obviously see many come though our doors. But also part of a Rovers Owner Club, so yearly (except 2020) attend events and see many beautifully kept / restored Rovers.
Not quite all gone, currently doing full restoration 1973 3500 auto, and a few engine upgrades, camshaft cylinder heads and carburettor and 5 speed lt77 gearbox, trying to find time to work on the old girl is the problem, ditto the engine, cam missing lobes and bearings on copper, yet oil pressure good and purred like a kitten , should be quick enough when done
@@PenguinMotors hopefully one day soon, other things got in the way so project stalled for a couple of years, but determined to get back to it before xmas so I have a definite plan for spring 🤞
Need to find the David Vizard Powertec 10 episode where he discusses timing chains and how tight they should be. He dynoed one that was quite tight. He then put a timing set with a little looseness in it in and dynoed that. Picked up something like 5HP. Now too loose like your first timing set is way loose for certain. If power is not off a bit, the idle will be erratic as the cam allows the spark to "scatter".
Oil Extreme Concentrate added at each oil change will drastically reduce wear. I don't know anyone who has lost a lobe if using Oil Extreme in a decent Synthetic Oil
Cryogenic freeze the chain..... Will increase life significantly. Tighter timing chain will cause a series loss in engine output.... As proven by David Vizard.
great to see a real mechanic who knows his stuff. Thanks, Graham. There's more to Ely than a big church.
Hey Graham, nice to see the old P6's on UA-cam. I have one and I will never sell it. Love it. Thanks for posting.
Glad to hear it. My P6 is definitely a keeper also! You are welcome for the video, certainly will have more P6 videos in the future.

@@PenguinMotors bonjour j'ai une rover SD1 et j'aimerais tellement avoir une P6 en V8 .

The P6 on top, Exactly same colours and model as one i had, wish i still had it, fabulous motor :)

@@rv8338 How's the restore going David? And not quite gone is right, there are a few. I'm currently looking for one...again.

Quite, a “tight” chain will drastically increase frictional losses, not just the chain itself but likely in the cam bearings
Very interesting. I have a Rover P5B and Im sure the camshaft is worn!! I may be giving you a call soon.
i put a cam in a P6 last week, exhaust lobes so worn that any more than part throttle and the exhaust was coming back up through the intake
nice tip for the lifters. never looked at that. Build couple engines with lifters. My next engine maybe get new ones instead of using the "old" ones
Vad är skillnad mellan roller tjen och en vanlig kamkedja ? Var kan jag beställa det settet och behöver jag ändra timingen MvhJonny
roller chain is more reliable and stretches less. colyes make them, or kent cams if you want a vernier adjustment. google is your friend.
Cam Drive should always be GEARS . A little bit noisier but a degree of Magnitude more reliable and Accurate .
Oil Extreme Concentrate added at each oil change will drastically reduce wear.
I don't know anyone who has lost a lobe if using Oil Extreme in a decent Synthetic Oil
TBH i dont know anyone thats lost a lobe after a rebuild, mostly they loose lobes because of years and years of infrequent or non existent oil changes
How many miles were on that engine ?
we dont know, it was fitted in a p6 but its an SD1 engine so could be any mileage
clean
Smashing work. I was thinking that the p6 community needed an "Allen Millyard". Check his vids you'll see what I mean!!
thanks, what Allen Millyard does with very limited tooling is amazing

there's tight, lose like stick in a bucket, and somewhere in between
