    I'm glad you mentioned specific brands. Agree with your comparison of LIFX and Hue.

    • @ProjectVRD
      @ProjectVRD 4 роки тому +7

      The two issues with LIFX is there is no diversity and it uses WiFi, and either one of those is for many an instant deal breaker. Addressing the first issue of diversity, Hue has more outdoor lights designed to affix to your wall than LIFX has for their entire range. Hue also has more lights designed to affix to the ground in your garden than LIFX's entire range. But when we look at Hue's entire range, their outdoor range is small compared to the Hue indoor range. All in all, Phillips' Hue brand is just so much bigger than anything any rival has to offer. There is a light fixture for everything and everyone's taste.
      The other issue is connectivity, LIFX uses WiFi but Hue uses a mesh system called Zigbee. A Hue bulb only has to be in distance of another Hue bulb and that means a bulb very far away doesn't need to be in range of the Hue bridge or ofcourse a WiFi router
      epeater, the commands will go across the entire mesh as each bulb communicates the command until reaches the right bulb. With this the light fixtures in a very large garden can communicate efficiently across the entire property of grounds, for LIFX you are relying WiFi repeaters and having no black spots of which stone walls are bad culprits.
      The intensity of light is superior on the LIFX bulbs, and it's app offers a better way to change warmth of white light. But that is where the advantages end.

    • @TheOrbiitz
      @TheOrbiitz 3 роки тому +2

      @@ProjectVRD I have to completely agree with this. I have read however that the connectivity issues with LIFX have been improved upon heavily, he also mentions this in the video. However ZigBee is still king in my personal experience.
      LIFX provides the better "light quality" (intensity/colour) like you said but the diversity with Hue is amazing. Here I certainly want to highlight their lightstrips, specifically the outdoor ones (and they also work very well indoors, for desks, beds, etc.), best lightstrip I have ever owned throughout a large variety. Next to that I must praise the dimmer switch, it's absolutely fantastic!
      I think one should really look for themselves, as advice I would say if you're looking for a few very high quality smart lights, maybe 2 - 4 in total, go with LIFX.
      If you're looking to create extreme ambience throughout your home and have/want to spend the money, go with Hue for now for sure! I've had a lot of pleasure with these lights and their sync system since I got them and a year later it still hasn't gotten old! The features for easily implenting routines have also helped me get a much better sleep schedule (I wake up 5 minutes before my alarm every time! Waking up has never been so great.) and since I work from home in the same room I do almost everything in it makes it amazing to switch my state of mind (from concentration to relaxation/meditation).
      I hope this can be helpful for people who aren't sure which of the TWO (there are certainly cheaper alternatives for those who aren't looking to spend this amount of money on lighting) to get. They're both great, even though I praise Hue a little more here, that's because I haven't owned that many LIFX bulbs but have a lot of experience with Hue. (I'm trying to say don't get Hue just because of this, think about your decision and what you want, not just now but also into the future, these are what you could call somewhat of an investment).

      I'm not into them at all because I can't stand LED lights..... a number of people I have spoken with who have neurological problems can't stand them they're flat and weird because they're electronic..... even there pink or Amber ones do not give off a warm glow .
      Now some scientists are saying that the LED lights are bad for people and I believe it .... the ones outside in the streetlights and on the sides of buildings are harsh and again create an eerie light .
      And it's getting harder and harder to find decent incandescent light bulbs I have to order them online when the batch I have here run out

    I think there was a feature for the lifx lights, (unless I’m confusing it for another lightbulb that looks similar) but it has infrared capabilities, which basically means it would emit an infrared light, which security cameras with infrared should pick up, and extend their infrared range.

      @@rainbowevil You can also see it that way - it's true. But if you look at it that way you can start to develop your own standard because sooner or later this happens with every standard. Apart from that there are plenty of non-Hue products that also support Zigbee so I don't see the problem here. Also, nobody forces you to use Hue and there are a lots of other products with their own open solutions.

So I went ahead and bought the TP-link instead because i already have some of their high quality products and i trust them. They’re actually only £19.99 on amazon (reduced from £39.99) at the time of writing this and they often are so that actually makes them cheaper than the yeelights on amazon. They arrived yesterday and they are great! Easily bright enough in every colour, really nice simple app and generally great quality. I’m sure the yeelights are also great but if your in the UK or just want something solid i really do recommend these 👍

    I bought 3 Philip smart bulbs to put in my ceiling light and connected them to my Alexa, for just $45. They are absolutely amazing! They could have instructions on how to connect it to a hub, but I totally recommend them! Edit: I bought them at Home Depot and do not have the hue thing, and I can control it from my phone easily if I don’t want to use alexa

    I can’t lie, I wanted hue to be better than Lifx. I’m invested in Hue pretty deep (20+ bulbs). And I don’t want to have 4 apps for lighting on my phone, because sometimes voice commands aren’t the best option for me. Either way I’ve enjoyed your content and appreciate your wife not killing you because of the Amazon bill!

    Thank you for your wonderful videos comparing smart light bulbs. They seemed well researched and presented. I have a very silly 'newbie' question. Once I add the smart lightbulb to my network, am I able to unscrew it and move it to another location on the same network without needing to go through the whole install again? In other words, if I setup the bulb inside the house and move it to a fixture outside, will I need to go through the whole 'process' again? Do I loose everything by turning the switch off and removing the bulb?

    The Teckin bulbs are now shipping with 2700K warm white via a colour temperature function. I have Teckin bulbs in all my E27 and B22 sockets. Only the two in my bathroom don’t have the colour temp control and I’m just going to keep them. The cool clinical white works best in a bathroom in my opinion.

    Check out the Geeni bulbs next. They seem halfway decent. I've been a Hue owner for 7 years ...they alway wait until the last minute before lowering their pricing. I figure a price reduction will come soon enough. I'm more into moving towards light strips and bias lighting rather than lamps now.

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  5 років тому +1

      Thanks for the suggestion! I'll for sure take a look at Geeni bulbs. I love light strips and bias lighting. I've been adding smart bulbs to inexpensive floor lamps like this www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-7-5-Spotlight-Accent-Lamp-Black-Finish/21881768 and hiding it behind something. There's so much cool stuff you can do with lighting though.

    Xiaomi yeelight 2nd gen are ones to consider they do a RGB & none RGB variant, I personally use the RGB variant myself, great stability (no drop outs) built in WiFi (no bridge) 800 lumens peak brightness, smart Assistant compatible and the app is very good and intuitive aswell. One thing to note is they do only come in Edison screw (E27) and living in the UK most lamp/light fittings are bayonet (B22) but other then that these are excellent value and well worth the price.

    IKEA Bulbs are also really good, but you have to connect them with a philips hue bridge! Then they are basicly the same as Hue bulbs in terms of functionality. And then they also have the same 16.8 Million Color Options of the Hue App :). The only problem is the Tradfri Bridge!
