Of the performances I have heard of this piece, this has always been my favorite. He loved Schumann, who was his favorite composer. His playing drives forward, with great rythmic vitality, yet he allows the piece to breathe, with great variety of tempi and dynamics. It's a heartfelt, sensitive performance, big romantic playing.

I think it's the way she plays Promenade that's so incredibly touching, and her finale is a soaring, unbridled Outburst of Joy. Nevertheless, THIS Moiseiwitsch is absolutely SPLENDID.
I grew to love the obvious charm of Novaes as a child . Her technique suffers compared to many Her Chopin etudes like Vlado Perlemuter show a musician first not a scientific virtuoso . Alicia deLarrocha somehow along with Gina Bachauer had it all !
Clear and at the same time delicate touch, perfect and flawless technique, innate lyricism and appropriate romanticism...this pianist has all that are needed for perfect performance of Schumann's piano works.
Leschetitzky pupils ranged from Paderewski to Schnabel, and Moiseiwitsch was as memorable as any for his princely lyricism. One quality all those pupils seemed to have: the golden tone fully in evidence here.
Moseiwitsch plays it very good indeed, but still I miss more warmth and the true Schumann character. I wish Nathan Brand had recorded it, there is only a practice session but I am convinced that it would have been the nec plus ultra if he had recorded it. Besides that I absolutely love Rachmaninoff's version. Novaes version I still have to discover. I will play Carnaval myself for my upcoming concerts and maybe record it too. From Schumann I have recorded Kreisleriana, feel free to listen to it on my channel.
This is a very poetic, refined, and healthy illumination of Schumann. I appreciate the nobility in this interpretation.
