Coma can last longer than 2 weeks, my 21 year old daughter was in a coma for 7 weeks. She opened her eyes for the first time right after the 7th week and has been in a vegetative state with sleep wake cycles ever since. I've been caring for her at home for 2 years now.
I challenge this woman's assertion that only 6% of people who have had brain injuries are long term disabled. If she is including concussion, this may be correct. But concussion must be kept separate from the far more serious category of moderate to severe traumatic brain injury. I'm such a patient, and I've lived my life since as a TBI induced semi - invalid. I'm in almost every TBI group on Facebook, and I assure Dr Hammond that most members would laugh as I do at the 6% figure. It is true that medicine can do marvelous things if the patient is gotten to an ER within an hour of an injury. Tragically, though this has been known for over thirty years, it seems very much as if most TBI patients are failed even in this.
I wouldn’t wish carbamazepine on my worst enemy, as the saying goes! That’s a horrible drug. Side affects outweigh ANY possible benefits. Approximately 12 concussions, epilepsy and sub dural hematoma with a craniotomy so have 1st hand experience with it.
