Thankyou & God bless. I have been googling for hours trying & find an instruction I could follow. Being a beginner everything kept going over my head. Thank God I found this tutorial & I am confident I will be able to stitch the dress I was planning for my daughter.
Thanks alot!!! MrCharliesAngel, glad you found the tutorial useful :) . As for the plain sheath dress pattern, we will cover that in our next pattern tutorial.
For me as a beginner, this tutorial was very helpful! Every Step is explained so I was able to make it. Also I appreciate you using the metric system! Thanks for the great Video!
Thank you for this wonderful pattern making video. This tutorial is the best one I've come across on UA-cam so far. It was very easy to follow and helped me to make my bodice pattern accurately. Now onto the cutting and sewing of it.
A viewer just pointed out to us that we made a mistake with the armhole measurement. At 4:45 we have the formula as : armhole= (bw/4) - 3.5cm (1.38inches) this formula is incorrect. The correct formula is : armhole= (bw/4) - 3.8cm (1.5inches) Sorry for this mistake. Your feedback is very important and helps us correct mistakes like this.
I am just seeing this comment . I created this patter twice with the arm and neck hole being too small the first time. I extended the measurements for both the 2nd time. The completed front bodice is slightly off not fitting edge to edge when I put the front on top of the back. Is this okay? Or any idea what I may have done wrong? Also thanks for the video it was very helpful. I wish I saw it before I tried the bodice with a t-shirt outline several times lol
Black Diamond DIY Fashion What's the 1.38 measurement that is added/subtracted in the formulas ? Is it how tight the bodice will be ? PS : Your tutorials are amazing ! :D
Really happy I found your channel :) Mum's pointed out that it's always a good idea to learn how to draft patterns with the proper dressmaking tools as it makes things much easier but we haven't found any local classes so this is definitely the next best thing :) Thanks!
this is the best basic pattern tutorial i've found, it's clear and really simple to understand it well~ Thanks for the tutorial! Love the others tutorial as well ;)
Yes, my name is chi-town girl and I was watching your channel, and I am impressed with your method of creating a basic bodice, You go girl, and thank u for your channel what other shows do u have?
I did this in about 20 minutes and it came out great...very easy to understand once you have all your measurements done correctly. Thank you, your instructions are super easy to follow......now show us step by step, from scratch how to make a romper pllllleeeeeaaaaassseeeeeee...lol
Haha!! Totally unexpected ending to this vid!! "My precious" :P Anyway, great vid! I'm a beginner & I've been looking at TONS of different vids to learn as much as possible... this is the best explained vid I've seen re making your own pattern. Thanks!! Hope to see more! Louisa.
Hahaha, Your welcome, we're glad you liked it. Oh we got more in store for our channel!!! We have many more upcoming tutorials. The [sewing;)]gears are in motion.
Thanks for the video! I did it and it came out great. Do you thing you could do a video for female pants, and how to create a pattern for draping on a skirt or top.
Very good tutorial. Thank you so much. I'm anxious to try out my pattern. However, the sound cuts off at 12:31, and at 12:49 I can't hear the instructions for how to measure for the back armhole. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Editing my comment. I made the mistake of not reading other comments. Also, I probably shouldn't be drafting at 3 AM lol. I read your reply to a comment and you say the 3.5cm is for ease or give but as far as I know you don't add that to a bodice sloper because it is supposed to be like a second skin. give/ease is added later with the seam allowance when cutting the pattern on fabric. Thank you for this very easy and simple video. All the others are complicated. You gained a subscriber.
Hi, I really liked this tutorial. I made a top out of it and even used your other videos to manipulate the top with princess darts with sleeves. The only thing I found is that the top came out slightly bigger. Not really fitted. Whay is that please? Thanks!
When you're drawing the armholes on the pink coloured cardboard, to help me understand, please can you explain which part of the French Curve you use for this curved line ? thank you, Diana
i followed this and included the shoulder darts from the video u did on the 3 different types if darts. my top came out perfect! this was so easy to follow. can you show how to make women's blazers?
I want to make my sleeves shorter so it didnt go all the way to my shoulder but I still don't know if I should use the shoulder measurement on the bust while I draw in the arm hole. Can anyone help me understand what I need to do?
What a great tutorial! Your voice is lovely and you took your time instead of rushing through it. Finally after 10 other tuts, I found one I am sure I can follow nicely. Now I need to go get me a french curve! What fabric would you recommend if I don't wish to have a zipper? I am worried I won't buy enough or I will cut it too short. I would really like to use a Charmeuse, something satiny. But would also like to try it with stretch knit. Do you have a tut for how to put breast pads in the bodice?
Alison Maschmeier Sorry for the late reply but it must have slipped through the cracks. Anyhow, the fabric I would recommend would be a stretch satin or something with the lustrous shine of satin, for example a polycotton jersey or polycotton spandex. As for the Charmeuse it would a beautiful fabric to work with however, due to the fact that it is not a stretch fabric you will have to use a closure. It doesn't have to be a zip, it can be buttons, rouleau loops, eyelets, anything that you may wish to use. Hope that helps.
Thank you for the very clear tutorial, just some questions that may help me with this, am I to assume that the bust width is to be marked on the armhole marker? as there was no mention of measuring down the bust depth. Could you also please explain what this can then be used for, is it to aid in getting the right fit? kind regards
how do you select shoulder slope? should we calculate armwhole after adding the slope? that is 1.3 cm+ the armwhole length, because do you think it'll make the armwhole length smaller?
Hi, greetings from the UK. Would you get reasonable measurements if you used your equation for someone who has a very large bust, small back and a small head?
I was wondering about the placement of the French curve. I was thinking it should be laid onto the pattern in a certain position. Please comment. Thank you so much for your enjoyable and informative video without a lot of needless chatter lol.
Great tutorial! Thanks so much. Why don't you add the seam allowance before cutting it out? Is that so you can add as much or as little ease depending on the type of fabric or styling you want to do?
Hi, thanks for the tutorial. I would like to check regarding the 3.5 cm allowance thats added to the calculation. Since we are dividing the total measurement by 4, is the 3.5 cm added to the 4th of each, like if 20cm divided by 4=5 cm then should we add 3.5 cm to each 5 cm or to the 20 cm and then divide into 4 parts like 20+ 3.5 divide by 4. I usually dont put allowance so your insight would help. thanks
If the measurement you got off your measuring tape is 20cm, it becomes 20 divided by 4 which is equal to 5. Then add 3.5 giving you 8.5cm. That 3.5cm is not seam allowance though, it is part of the formula. You can see that we still add seam allowance in our DIY-Basic Pattern Tutorial: The Basic Top tutorial
Claudia Bailey she wasn't really clear. The reason why you add that 3.5 CM or a one and a half inch is for ease. ease means so that you can actually move your arms and sit and reach while wearing the Garment. I hope that helps
Hi,if i will be using an inches tape rule for my measurement the calculation will be different, because i divided my bust by 4 plus 1.38 inches which the answer is quiet different from using 3.5cm......I got different answer how do i choose between using cm or inches for the calculations
Ayede Rofiat You need to make a decision at the start as to whether you will use inches or centimetres then you have to keep it consistent all the way through and it should work.
Hi! Where did you get 21cm for the armhole measurement (at 6:50)? I thought you said it was BW/4 - 3.8cm? Please help! This is the part that always does me in! I haven't been successful in doing a bodice. :(
im having same problem. it will be helpfull if BD could maintain term of measurement through out the video so we can refer back to measurement taken and doing calculation.
Kim Alcoreza now I know You use your original bust measurement ÷4 and then - 3.5 to get your armhole measurement. (Like the real measurement like 83cm or so ) I know it's too late u wrote the comment 1 year ago but maybe it would help someone else haha
Thanks. This is the way we were taught to make it and it has generally worked out for us so far(we used this pattern block for the top in this video Basic Pattern Tutorial: The Basic Top at the 11 minute mark). However we are open to different ideas and techniques and we accept that our way is not the only way. This is just a basic pattern block and is made to be manipulated.
im still confused with the armhole measurements. what is the right formula please? for some reason the correction in the tutorial is cutoff so i can't see the entire revised equation.
Hi there! I didn't quite understand the logic of equation of dividing by 4 and 12 and adding . Can you explain it clearly a l'ttl bit please. Thankyou.
I am a little confused a out adding the extra inches. Do you add it before dividing it by 4? And also, when you are doing the first shoulder measurement, do you measure over the breast? I would like a tutorial on making a pants pattern. Is there one somewhere? Thanks
hasifah nalumansi In the case of the bodice, Full length, is the measurement from the shoulder to the hip bone. You'll find this at 1:44 in the tutorial
finally i got it. how could you make this so easy, while everyone else teaches this so complicatedly. I love you!
Thankyou & God bless. I have been googling for hours trying & find an instruction I could follow. Being a beginner everything kept going over my head. Thank God I found this tutorial & I am confident I will be able to stitch the dress I was planning for my daughter.
Finally I found someone that could actually teach . I learned a lot from your tutorial, thank you very much
I have been looking for a more simple bodice pattern for a little while and this was by far the easiest!!! Thank you sooo much
Thanks alot!!! MrCharliesAngel, glad you found the tutorial useful :) . As for the plain sheath dress pattern, we will cover that in our next pattern tutorial.
What a clever lady. Love watching you at work.

Black Diamond DIY Fashion What's the 1.38 measurement that is added/subtracted in the formulas ? Is it how tight the bodice will be ?
PS : Your tutorials are amazing ! :D
What is the 3.8cm you are subtracting from the armhole formula? Is it ease/seam allowance?
Black Diamond DIY Fashion Is the 1.5inches for seam allowance? That's added to get the Armhole formula
Thanks for the instructions, I have looked at lots of sites, only to get discouraged with drafting. This is really helpful to me.
Your videos are so informative and explain the concept very well. I'm able to remember every single thing.
Thank You.
your tutorial was so easy to follow for a beginner like me.i like it so much.
Hi there, just wanted to say thank you for the tutorial and have a nice day.
Really happy I found your channel :) Mum's pointed out that it's always a good idea to learn how to draft patterns with the proper dressmaking tools as it makes things much easier but we haven't found any local classes so this is definitely the next best thing :) Thanks!
This is an excellent idea on how to make basic clothes. It would be nice to see you use the pattern on material and see the end product. Nice work!
this is the best basic pattern tutorial i've found, it's clear and really simple to understand it well~ Thanks for the tutorial! Love the others tutorial as well ;)

You're welcome. I'm glad that it worked out for you. :)
Great tutes. Love the metal. Takes an Aussie to do a simple tute in metric, with good music as well. Appreciate it 👍

Thank you for these tutorials outstanding job.
Hi.
If the 3.5cm is the "give", I still need to add seam allowance when I cut my fabric, correct?
Thanks so very much and for sure have got some thing but could you kindly also teach us how to make patterns of ladies jackets
This is so helpful. I personally liked the metal and Gollum impression. :D
Yes, this is just what I needed! Thanks for the awesome explanation :) I can't wait to try it out!!

which part of the French Curve you use for this curved line ? thank you, Diana

i followed this and included the shoulder darts from the video u did on the 3 different types if darts. my top came out perfect! this was so easy to follow. can you show how to make women's blazers?
she explains super well
love your videos. How do you put a side or armhole dart on the bodice for those full busted people?
I want to make my sleeves shorter so it didnt go all the way to my shoulder but I still don't know if I should use the shoulder measurement on the bust while I draw in the arm hole. Can anyone help me understand what I need to do?

Thank you for sharing. Do you know if this be used for constructing a corset?
Alexandra Rodriguez It can be used as a basic block for a corset but requires a large amount of pattern manipulation.
please let me know if that 3.5 ease is overall or in every quarter?
Dude, I love the metal!
Hi and I just wanna say I find you very easy to listen to. But I was wondering are there any with inches or converted so I can follow along also. Ty
hello, you measuring tape should have one side with inches and the other side with centimeters
how do you select shoulder slope? should we calculate armwhole after adding the slope? that is 1.3 cm+ the armwhole length, because do you think it'll make the armwhole length smaller?

Do you have a video that shows how to put darts in a bodice pattern?
Can I use this for a non stretch garment???
Great video. Can you show how to make it into a plain sheath dress pattern.
Great tutorial! Thanks so much. Why don't you add the seam allowance before cutting it out? Is that so you can add as much or as little ease depending on the type of fabric or styling you want to do?
When you say BW, do you mean the original Bust size, without any computation or the bust size after computation?
Thank you very much ,I love it because it's help me a lot

you made the sloper pattern very easy to understand :)

what will happen to the,3. 5cm that is added to the measurement will it not make it a little bigger i would like to know please

Are the measurements divided by two since you fold the paper?
My upper bust/under bust is vastly different than my bust. 120 cm vs 134 cm. Which measurement should I be using?
how did you get the armhole lenght measurement?
is everything being measured in centimeters?
love your explanation best video so far. my question is can the seam allowance can't be added to the pattern before placing it on d fabric?
Thanks :). To answer your question, you can add seam allowance to the drawn pattern before you place it on the fabric..
One more question, do you add seam allowance?
Are all the numbers being added for seam allowance?
Hi! Where did you get 21cm for the armhole measurement (at 6:50)? I thought you said it was BW/4 - 3.8cm? Please help! This is the part that always does me in! I haven't been successful in doing a bodice. :(

You use your original bust measurement ÷4 and then - 3.5 to get your armhole measurement. (Like the real measurement like 83cm or so )
I know it's too late u wrote the comment 1 year ago but maybe it would help someone else haha
Pinkcamel This actually helped me! Thank you so much!
Good video. Just one point I'd like to make. I wudve thot the back wud be slightly longer at the top neck shoulder to waist
Do we get the measurements by inches or cm?
Good tutorial sound went off though right at the point of the changes on the back pattern at arm hole and neck section 😊
What type of fabric can you use for this pattern? Spandex? Cotton?
If I only use one piece of paper and cant fold it in half, will it still work even if I have one side?
Thanks for the detail explanation. Do you have any bodice tutorials for kids? Tia!
PLEASE HELP... for the neck down/across, are you using the bw measurement "before or after" the added calculation? (hope this makes sense)
+Demetra Oliver hello, for the neck down/across I'm using the original bust width measurement, so before the calculations are applied. :)
im still confused with the armhole measurements. what is the right formula please? for some reason the correction in the tutorial is cutoff so i can't see the entire revised equation.

Awesome tutorial! Thanks :)
Thank you for good tutorial, I have the same question of our friend. Is this 3.5 cm for cutting allowance?
thank you im start this project right now
Awesome!!! let us know if you have any questions.
When i wanna make a blouse, Should i use bodice pattern?
hasifah nalumansi In the case of the bodice, Full length, is the measurement from the shoulder to the hip bone. You'll find this at 1:44 in the tutorial
I am a bare beginner. Do have a clip for the sleeves please.
Munira Dhanji We have a Sleeve Pattern Video at ua-cam.com/video/vaKzUifoszg/v-deo.html
I want to get your basic pattern for pant sewing pls. Black diamond
What would all the measurements be in inches?
How can I add darts to this pattern? Should I add more cm to the sides to add the darts?
We have a tutorial that shows you how to do exactly that. Check it out here DIY-Pattern Manipulation Tutorial: Darts :)
Why do we need to add 3.5 cm to ours measurements and keep on dividing ?
Can you use this technique in applying it to making a child's bodice?
for sure, darling
