Question, I have a PS3 Controller, And there's a little bit of trouble with the jump button. When i try to jump twice as sonic to do the thonk or whatever you call it, It jumps once. and i have to wait for a while before i can jump again. Like a cooldown, Any solutions to fix this?

Even if this game is as old as time. To me it’s my favorite sonic fan game. The exploration. The level design. But my favorite thing about this fan game is the modding community. To the loved (but kinda overrated) modern sonic. To the fan ocs with unique and interesting ability’s (still hyped for inazuma) or just the stupidly overpowered but hard to master super mystic sonic. This modding community has shown me that this game can become anything you want it to be. And that holds a special place in my heart

It's basically 3d Classic Sonic done right.
Modern v5 is not that overrated - it plays really good and makes the game way more enjoyable (but the stomp breaks thz)
But the werehog mod - that's the bomb.
Cacee will never not be best character in my eyes, she actually made the metal sonic fight... not any different but her moveset rewarded you for treating it like punch out, which made it so much more satisfying to nail the uppercuts and get him with that solid 1-2 punch combo.
Don't forget total conversions like Metroid Vanguard and SRB2 Persona.
The modding community for SRB2 deserves more credit. Seriously, I love SRB2 to bits but the mods will give this game so much longevity, even more than Generations.
I'd love to do a similar video to my Sonic Mania SHC 2020 video, minus the time crunch, on Some of the big SRB2 mods.

So for the first time, I did a full playthrough as Knuckles, also got all the emeralds. I can tell some of the parts would be aids if I was playing as Sonic instead. I can see why you use to dislike it but I personally enjoyed most of it.

Knuckles is actually the harder of the two characters once you're adept with the controls, so kudos to you for sticking through to ERZ!

This game has had so much put into it, that it’s basically done. I’m confident that the devs can just pronounce that it’s finished and stop working on it any time they want, and I think that would still be okay.
And yet they won’t declare it done, and continue to keep working on it even after around 20 years of piecing it together. It’s been with us through most of the franchise’s history, it’s been there through some of the highest and definitely most (if not ALL) the lowest point that Sonic has ever been in.
It’s a fan game that is more reliable than Sonic Team themselves, and that really says something.
This is why I declare SRB2 as the best fan-game of all time. No other fan-game has ever come close to all the time and effort that has been put into it, and there’s no sign of that slowing down anytime soon.
It is a shining example of the beauty that can come from the fans, and it’s an example of the potential that Sonic Team misses out on due to carelessness and incompetence.
It's not done, there are still many zones missing, and the final boss is a placeholder, even.
It's not "more reliable". Sonic team actually finished their games!

I will add that everybody should play tails for a first playthrough, it helps immensely with getting to grips with the physics/controls. Pretty sure I wouldnt like it as much as I do if I hadnt done that
my first playthrough of srb2 ever was of sonic & tails, and for all i can say, i enjoyed it
@@itryan9962 @IT Ryan honestly I found using tails flight with sonic super finicky. But hey that's great, I didn't say it was impossible of course.
I used sonic, learned the hard way but once I feel like I mastered it I started to enjoy the game way more
I mean it probably helped me, however i just picked tails because he's my favorite character lol.
Red Volcano Zone is a great zone though, you just need to git gud (I'm joking lol)
But seriously, I love speedrunning that zone after mastering the controls.

2:30 Officially called Whirlwind Shield.
Radioactive Shield is actually the Armageddon Shield and the Double Shield is called the Force Shield.
Fire-water like shield is the Elemental Shield, and the yellow one is the Attraction shield. Guess Knuckles also forgot that the fire shield exists in this game too.
Also the Force Shield Stops forward direction.

We call the "Air Dash" the Speed Thok becuase of the sound it makes.

Also here are the official names for the Shields
"Gust Shield" - Whirlwind Shield
"Yellow Shield" - Attraction Shield
"Fire-bubble Shield" - Elemental Shield
"Double Shield" - Force Shield
"Radioactive Shield" - Armageddon Shield
And all of the S3 Shields are basically named after their S3 counterparts.
It's a manuver you can only use in mid air that pushes you forward and can get you to a decent speed when you land. Unlike the homing attack, it doesn't lock onto an enemy and it doesn't give Sonic a 2nd jump. Sounds like an air dash to me, just a bit more useful.

The Modern Sonic mod makes me love this game to death.

The thing I love most about SRB2 is that I can actually play as other characters who exhibit they're own unique characteristics in actual sonic stages. For instance, a homing attack is not plastered onto Amy/Fang because she moves to quickly throughout a stage.

It probably is fine, I'm sure they won't be looking for Sonic fan games with their content in it. But iirc, they have also taken down fan games with their own original design, but I believe that was a few years ago from when I last remember.
Confession: I never played Robo Blast 2. I need to get around to playing it one of these days. It looks solid and the fanbase can't seem to get enough of it.
I'd say give it a shot. It'll take a bit to get used to, but I think you'll get the hang of it.
I did. Had some difficulty at first but now, I think SRB2 is one of my favorite 3D Sonic game... yes game, better than pretty much all official Sonic games alongside Generations, Unleashed and Sonic Adventure 2.
Even have a full playthrough for SRB2 on my channel (sitting at 200k views too lol)

I think, since the release of this video, they've actually included the 3D models for all of the non-mod characters and enemies (as well as some popular mod characters) as part of the "official" SRB2 download package, so you only need to download 3D models separately to go with certain mod characters like Modern Amy and the like. I think.
Ah. I appreciate that they've never ditched the 2D sprites and made them optional. I think that even with the option, I still prefer the 2D sprites. Sure the 3D models can give you better depth, but the 2D sprites have such a charm unlike any other Sonic game imo and it's not like the sprites were at all sloppily made like in earlier versions either. They're consistent, even more consistent then some 2D Sonic games.

Have you even STARTED with mods? They're the best part of the game. Lots of its issues are fixed by them, like for example the speed cap being really low, and others. There's also mods that add more characters to the game, mods that add levels, and mods that change the whole campaign to a new one!
The “Double Shield” has an ability, it makes you stop mid air
The wind double jump one is called the “Whirlwind shield”
The yellow home-attack is the Attraction Shield, the water fire one is the elemental shield

I've noticed that the Level design in Sonic Robo Blast 2 seems more suited for Tails and Knuckles.
It felt suited for Sonic. Knuckles and Tails will automatically have an easier time because of their abilities.
@@GottaBeFrank There are significant portions of the map that only Knuckles and Tails can reach. If you're playing as Sonic you're basically choosing to miss out on like a third of the game's content.

You said the answer was yes because you enjoy it, but the question was if you still hate it.
Recommended mods for vanilla playthroughs:
1: Classic Physics, the Momentum Mod, or equivalent. These mods allow the character to override the friction system when gaining speed at certain rates, or sometimes they simply restrict friction to be a static constant. In effect, it allows you to be affected by the momentum system to the fullest extent while running. I recommend Classic Physics because it also buffs rolling, changes the spindash, and lets you controll your character when jumping out of a roll.
2: Almost Software Shading. This is basically cel shading which obeys the palette, letting you have the vibrant look of Software mode with the 3D models of OpenGL mode. Mods like this have been possible since around 2.2.6, with the introduction of a built-in shader API.
3: Thok replacements if needed. Classic Physics removes the Thok, but you can assign any other ability to replace it. I personally recommend the various momentum-based Thoks, including the Juke Thok, the Momentum Thok, and the Spin Thok.
4: Any Lua you want to download or make. As l.ong as it doesn't meaningfully change the gameplay, it's fine!
Changing the physics no longer makes it a vanilla playthrough.
In SRB2 V2.2.9, the Attraction Shield (the yellow lightning shield), got an update where you can now homing attack enemies as many times as you want.
That sounds broken and I'm all for it.
Try it. You won’t regret it.

I've actually taken to calling the screen nuke/atomic/radioactive shield the BFS since the game is somehow still running in the DOOM engine

cool game, part of my childhood, and frustrating as fuck, also confusing, but fun, even more with mods
honestly just watching this might make me pick the game back up, I initially dismissed it after playing for a few hours and saying to myself "yeah, the controls are kind of abysmal." like, literally every other part of the game (except for a few select boss encounters) was fine. it was just that the cast felt too slippery to reasonably control..

If you do get to play SRB2P, make sure you grab the Fang addon that I and a few others in the server developed, since he's not part of the Persona mod by default. The folks there seem to enjoy him, which makes me happy.
I might stick to the base game. If there are any neat mods for it, I'll be sure to give it a mention.
The "Wind" shield is actually called the Whirlwind shield if I'm correct. I got this name off of Zone Builder 2.9, so I might be wrong. Edit: Also, the final boss literally IS Black Eggman/Metal Robotnik from the Sonic the Hedgehog OVA.

Flame Shield from S3K it's present in the game too, you can find it in Haunted Heights Zone, as you see, the Elemental Shields from S3K it's only possible to find in the Extra Levels, like the Bubble Shield in Azure Temple Zone or Electric Shield in Aerial Garden Zone (and also the neutral shield from Sonic 1 and 2, but they are green). Also, i think the Magnetic Shield (the Yellow Shield) it's not the same shield from Sonic 3D Blast, it's like the Electric Shield, it atract rings! but you can use the ability to homing attack (but i think S3DB was the inspiration for this ability) it's a new shield, just like the Tornado Shield, Elemental Shield, Plasma Shield and Armagedon Shield.
Also, in 2.2.8 now the 3D Models from Jack Jims are already in the game natively, but just for the characters in the game, if you want a model for a Mod Character (some model he already made) then you need to download

I understand why u hated this game, I've recently tried for the first time and the controls can be confusing to learn and the levels can feel a bit to big and easy to get lost (for me anyways) Lol

The lives system is actually kind of important in No Save mode (where you have limited continues) and online multiplayer.
In single player, you are booted back to the title screen if you Game Over with no continues, which means ALL your progress is instantly gone if you were in No Save mode (aside from unlockables earned).
In Multiplayer, running out of lives more or less means you have to wait until everyone else finishes or runs out of lives (race mode), or someone can get a shared 1-up and instantly revive everyone (co-op).
I feel like the only person who actually prefers sprites over 3d models.
Nah I prefer sprites. I honestly don't like the models, they take away some of the game's character.

A few things about the shields, and other aspects of the game...
The force shield can halt your momentum from all directions, in addition to giving 2 free hits
The attraction shield also attracts rings much like the lightning shield, but also protects from electric hazards, and disappears in liquids.
There is a S3 fire shield in the game. But by default, it only appears in certain spots of Haunted Heights Zone.
Both the bubble shield and elemental shield can protect players from certain water based hazards such as green chemicals in Techno Legacy Zone. (Or purple chemicals in the old 2.0 versions of the game)
Lastly, the most important part...
For the true intended experience, don't use simple controls. Whether it's a controller, or mouse and keyboard, don't use simple. While it may allow certain abilities to have 360 control, it often works against you, especially since abilities like Sonic's Thok, and Knuckles glide, are designed in the normal and strafe schemes to only go the direction the camera is facing. This is why trying to correct an overshot jump with either of these moves is often a death sentence, since they were first made for fixing undershot jumps. Especially with the Thok's immense speed, which is equal to Sonic's speed sneaker speed.
Try to relearn the game with normal controls. Sure, you'll have to do all of your own camera work, but it's more than worth it once you master it.
I've been told about the shields before, which is pretty neat. They're all really good.
As for the controls, I'll stick to what feels good to me. The "true intended experience" is a thing I've heard for so long and I really don't care. Simple works for me, so that's what I use.
Let's see. Special stages 6 and 7 absolutely suck, the controls are equivalent to an all ice level, the navigation and requirements to the special stages are a pain, and on top of that the second coin in that damn purple slime zones 1 and 2. Special stage 7 made me feel so much hate.

Force (blue hexagonal)
Pity (not in main campaign)

Bubble
Whirlwind's double jump is significantly different from the electric shield, as whirlwind leaves you open to attack, but can be used out of other actions like springs or ledges to give you a really good boost or save you on some jumps if you react fast enough!
I never really thought about the SRB 2 ost but by actually hearing it instead of having a fit from being bad at the game I think I want to listen to them all now...

i'd like to let you know that some of the songs are better in the original, and there's only one song i personally dislike compared to the original and that is eggrock act 2 (or maybe act 1 i'm not entirely sure) because they got rid of the guitar in 2.2 which was imo one of the best parts in the song.

Dmc3 solved the lives issue with gold orbs mode years ago, spend a life keep going from where you are. That instantly makes them have value as you dont restart the level or from a check point but from where you just screwed up.
theres a setting in the game to see what sounds are currently playing on the bottom right and if you use the different shields you can also see what they are called

Two more zones are found to be added to the games the dreadful dark city and the sky conqueror grand eggship (originally called doomship but abandoned due the the abreaviation DSZ already taken by deep sea
the 3D models make this game looks like the Sega Saturn Sonic game we never got. and I love it :)
I like the game. But sonic is a little bit too faster and its bad to jump in a platform. The special stage is too different and hard sometimes.
The last few special stages are rough, but they can be beaten.
One minor issue I have with the story mode is that there's no true final boss that can only be accessed with Sonic and all 7 Emeralds. I do hope that one day, the mods put the time and effort to include this feature.
the game is still being worked on, we can expect 2 whole new zones, a second act for red volcano as well as a boss, and most likely a new true final boss, so keep an eye out.
I think it's fine to not have a boss that requires all emeralds.

It's a bit to adjust to, but it can be done. I played on controller, so I felt like I had better control with character movement.
for new players: do not use 3d mode. a lot is broken in that mode

Just a note about the controls, the controller is an afterthought so it's somewhat glitchy or not as well designed with the levels.
Simple controls on Egg Rock weren't really that bad. By the time I made it here, I had everything down, so most jank from the controls were a non-issue.
It's probably called a 'thok' because that's the sound it makes.
I love Arid Canyon because of it's history: First you were going to have a Mine Maze Zone, but the level was scrapped, then a Rocky Mountain, but it was ALSO scrapped! But the team merged the levels to create a Sandy Canyon with a mine, besides, in the first versions of Arid Canyon, only Act 1 was there, and one of the main focuses of v 2.2 was to have the act. 2 and bringed back a gimmick that wasn't seen since the 1998 versions of the Mine level: the Minecart. But the boss was a big surprise. I won't spoil it but I can say it is from Triple Trouble.

Pretty much agree with most of what you said here, although Deep Sea 2 will forever be my favorite in this level.
Just a note, but 2.2.9 should make netgames a bit smoother as they're optimizing some stuff finally, but no promises because.. well.. SRB2's netcode is absolutely terrible.
Also, I would recommend only playing with 3D Models if you're playing the vanilla game, because a LOT of mods don't support models and they're a lot harder to work with than sprites when it comes to modding. Besides that though, go ham.
there's a yellow shield? i say, even though i am fully aware of the ground pound/bubble hybrid and gust shields
I can't believe you hate Red Volcano Zone so much. It's my favorite level in the game. So much fun to do the high speed platforming.
Lives actually just tell the player to stop playing the game when they run out, honestly. I've never once, in decades and decades of playing games, decided to keep playing a game after I've run out of lives outside of an arcade. It's bad design that just prevents the player from experiencing the game, so I don't think any balance is needed. The only thing that'd be preferred to what they did here would be to remove lives entirely.
Agreed, I feel like lives are a outdated system. Especially for Sonic. When you run low on lives your forced to play it safe and it's the game saying play it slow or be punished and for a game like Sonic where the whole point is "gotta go fast" is something I never liked. Having no lives makes the player be more willing to experiment since you have no repercussions when you try whats on your mind. If you have a single life and see a opportunity to skip a huge portion of the level but see that it requires skills to do so and might be hard. You are more likely to not even try it out of fear of reaching a game over. It limits the player which especially for a player like me that loves to just go fast and try to do any tricks to go faster just sucks.
@@robotmaster4515 Exactly. And assuming they actually want people to spend time in the extremely complicated levels to learn them the same as you would linear ones, they should be encouraging the player to spend as much time in them as possible, not the other way around.
Many 2D Sonic games really just seem to be full of this deeply contradictory design in just about every aspect of the gameplay and I don't get it. It's a real shame.
@@Pichuscute Yeah, in my opinon I prefer to play the 2d sonic games without lives since I just dislike the lives system. I understand why they did it back then since it was necessary on the old hardware like arcade machines to make you spend more money but now a days it's useless. Glad it's been dying more and more over the years and being used way less. Even in robo blast, it's so forgiving that it makes me wonder why it exists at all.
@@robotmaster4515 The whole point of Sonic isn't just going fast, it's "play safe until you understand the level and make a route to complete it in the lowest time possible" (At least in the 2d games without the boost).
You CAN go fast the first time you enter a level, but there is a high risk of getting hit.
