Deleting photos after they have been entered into LR's catalogue is sort of like having a warehouse full of various products, creating a catalogue describing everything, and then because you have that catalogue, burning down the warehouse.

That 'Local' Tab (finder window) is a time savior.
Shoot with iPhone (choice of most any camera app) - Air Drop to Mac.
Edit in LR on the Mac + Edit in Photoshop (if wanted) + Edit in Camera Raw Filter (if wanted) + back to PS for more edits (if wanted) + Save & Close.
Back on my Mac's drive I now have 1 or 2 versions to 'Copy to the Cloud' (if wanted) then delete from Mac (if wanted).
I don't delete them from my Mac's drive but I do MOVE them to an archive external drive.

Great myth-busting tutorial Terry - Thank You.
I have a question, not related to myths.
I have a Family History project ongoing for the last 23 years,
with many of my historic photos going back to the 1920s,
I like to add a glossary to the Photo for Printing and Sharing,
this glossary contains - Who, When, Where, What, Info, located in any of the 4 corners of the photo.
I start this process in LRC by exporting the original to Edit in PS as a copy,
I then add my text in PS,
Save the edits back to PS as both a PSD and JPG files,
I now have an additional 2 files the same size or larger than the untouched Original,
I now put the 3 files into a Stack.
Is there an easy way to add annotation / text to LRC files.
maybe using a Snapshot or a SmartPreview,
so the Original File has a non destructive text Layer (!) or similar
I hope the above makes sense.
I'm guessing there is no option to do this.

I like to use smart previews and these take up huge amounts of space, hence I have a catalogue per client event so when done and delivered I can remove the lot when done. I also have a new catalogue per year for the same reason. Yes it is a pain to have to open multiple catalogues but even with a gaming pc with 1t drive it’s necessary. My originals are all on external drives to. What I want is sync up from LRC but not down to the current catalogue as it takes a long time to sync everything and I don’t want that for all jobs once done and it’s a pain to have to go and remove them

Nice explanation Terry and can see the benefits of LR over LRC, however, as you stated the Print option in LRC is much better than PS, but is there a print option going to be added to LR? or do we have to switch between both versions just to use the print module?

Hi Terry: Thanks for creating and sharing this video. QUESTION: How does Lr handle Keywords. I have applied keywords to all of my images via LrC and these keywords are contained in a Structured Keyword List. I have seen where the keyword appears within Lr and I can see how I am able to add a new keyword. Is there a way to see the Structured Keyword List within Lr so I can place or edit the new keyword in the proper branch of my Structured Keyword List? Can I see the Structured Keyword List that is being used within the Lr application. Thanks, Keith

    Hi Terry. Great video.
Does Lr have publish services like LrC? And the can we use plugins like Aftershoot, pic-time publishing and other plug-ins? When I try to google something about Lr, I just find topics that cover LrC. I'd love to switch, but I can't find info about the things I wonder about and functions that I use daily in my work as a Real Estate, portrait and wedding photography.
There are good things in Lr, but then I sync the images, do the changes and synck back to LrC.

I have a two questions with the Lightroom Album under People to search my photos and label faces. QUESTION 1) Am I correct that the cloud version is much better at finding and labeling faces than in the Lr Classic? QUESTION 2) If one of my photos contains a face that Lightroom did not recognize is there a way to go to that photo and instruct the application that there is a specific person in it? Is ‘keywords’ the only way to overcome this automated shortcoming in ‘People’?

If they will have the same features in the future there is no meaning to have two apps. Now that Lightroom CC has the "Local" tab I think it makes more sense to bring all the functions of Lightroom Classic into Lightroom CC and work exclusively on one app.
The only things I miss on Lightroom CC are "Sync edits" function (is not the same thing of copy and paste edits), Virtual copies (on Lightroom CC there is the Versions function but it's working just on the Cloud mode) and Labels. But have you noticed that when you're comparing two photos on Lightroom CC you can, for example, crop the photo without exiting from the comparing mode but on Lightroom Classic you can't do? Why this function is better on Lightroom CC than on Lightroom Classic?@@TerryLeeWhite

Adobe indicates that Creative Cloud Files Sync is going away on Feb. 1, 2024. What exactly does that mean for those of us that pay approx. $10 per month for LrC and PS? For example, in LrC I will often syc some of my pictures in my collections, so that I can send a link to others to see my photos. Will I lose this ability when the Creative Cloud Files Sync is deleted? What about sharing my photos with my other devices by syncing them thru the cloud? 0:27

One thing I cannot find in Lightroom is the History Panel. I often go down a path and don’t like the result and I will use History to go to where I last liked my edits and start again from there. Also after asking for years Adobe finally gave us left handed users the ability in LRC to swap the main panels like PS. I don’t see this in LR.

    Hi Terry,
This will be longer than other comments, but I am long winded. It's a fault.
First I mean no disrespect, in fact the opposite: You're one of guys I watch a lot for reliable Photoshop info, but I have a major disagreement here.
I started with Photoshop with the first Windows version, (2.5?) and while I haven't worked with it in a professional capacity for 20 years now, (I'm long retired) I use it every day for my own photography and I keep it updated every time there is one. I have the beta version and I use them pretty much interchangeably. I strive to learn some new editing technique every day and I try everything, and take notes, and practice. The one biggest thing I have learned over the last decade or so is that I DON"T NEED LIGHTROOM. As you very adequately pointed out, Lightroom's "professional" editing is courtesy of Adobe Camera Raw, which opens automatically for me when I double-click a raw file, and it is also available as a filter accessible inside Photoshop. Photoshop is vastly more capable for photo editing, dodging/burning, color grading, etc. than ACR, which began life as a plugin to open raw files and then progressed to what it is today. I still consider ACR to be a raw file developer, for basic corrections to color, tone, and cropping etc. Yes, there are some great new tools in the latest versions, like Point Color, but until it gets layers, layer styles, Blend If and...you get it.
"Ah, but," you say, "Lightroom's strength is in organizing all those thousands of files. You can say 'but I have Bridge' but that means opening another program." What, I don't have to open Lightroom?
I think it was Myth#2 that says that you can just delete all the files on disk to save space, and you made a very big point of saying "Don't Do That!!" because Lightroom doesn't store your files, they're on the disk, and if you delete them they're gone. Lightroom just points to them. So how do I get to those files? Well, what I do is open Bridge and navigate to the file just as I would in Windows explorer. If I can't find a specific file, I can search for it in Bridge by keyword, star rating, file name, date created, file type...you get the idea. Then I can put it into Favorites, a Collection, a Smart Collection or nothing at all if that's what I want. No file is moved, I'm just telling Bridge where to find it, kind of...a lot like...Lightroom. Except...
If I use Lightroom I have to navigate to the files on disk, in the camera, or the card reader or wherever they are, just as in Bridge, but then they have be imported, an extra step not necessary with Bridge. This is where I soured on Lightroom a decade ago. Lightroom catalogs are notoriously finicky, and I had nothing but grief trying to keep Lightroom from losing file location, the database from getting corrupted and having to start over, and just the general nonsense that ensued every time I tried it again. I find Bridge has all the tools I need to organize my pictures, catalog my pictures, and find my pictures, and NO DATABASE. For me, that's not a feature, it's a bug. On a photo forum I frequent I recently counted 35 posts from people asking for help with importing their pictures into Lightroom. Why does this happen, why doesn't this work, where are my pictures, what happened to my catalogue, and on and on.
Kudos to Adobe's' marketing team for making Lightroom so indispensable to photographers of all skill levels...but not for me.

I fully understand the 'catalog system' of LRC... and I fully understand that anything done with the file should be done with Lightroom Library..... I currently have of 12 TB of images...
Here is my 'COMPLAINT'....... If Adobe wants us to use the Libary Module to properly manage our 'digital assets' ... Adobe needs to make the 'File Directory Controls and functionality' work the same way the Windows File Explorer or the Apple File Finder works......... and it does NOT
There are many, many things that can be done within the Windows File Explorer, which can NOT be done inside of the Lightroom Library Module...
What I am saying is....... "Make Adobe Lightroom Library function or operate more like the Windows File Explorer...... Does that make sense??

      @@TerryLeeWhite
First.. Thanks so much for your response...
The first example I can give you is that there is no "Cut & Past" of directories, like in the Windows File Explorer... Yes, you can "select & drag" but no cut and past...
Another example is... when you select a "folder" you can only see photo images that are in that folder, and those images are listed at the bottom of the film strip... What I am saying is the 'structure of the folder' is not displayed (AKA: File Tree) in a 'listing format' under the folder' like in Windows File Explorer... AND, you have NO clue if you have a 'stray' and no-photographic file within that folder... AND, when 'all of the files are listed'... one should be able to 'turn on' and 'turn off' when 'non-photo type files are being displayed
Another issue is when you do a "Folder Synchronization"... the operator has NO Idea which and what photo file types are being 'gathered' in the synchronization process... and they have no control over the selection of what file types they want to be included in the sync process.. ie RAW, JPG, TIFF or other file type... Just saying."Wind
I could give more examples,,, but i think the above will get you in the right direction...... what I am saying is the "Folder & File" structure should "look & act" more like the way the Windows File Explorer works........ AND, if it did, people would not become 'frustrated... and resort to doing things and/or changes that are outside of the Library Module which then cause the problems...... because files get 'misplaced'
If Adobe wants to cut down the confusion... make it look more like and work more like the "file explorer' or the 'file finder' in Apple
      Just some thoughts...
      Geroge........
PS: Thank you for all your wonderful content... I have been doing photography for 55+ years... BUT, I do love listening to the 'Real Pros' like you, Scott Kelby, and his partner Eric Kuna... Tks.

@@Goldstar46 thanks for clarifying. I see what you’re asking for. Unfortunately I don’t see LrC becoming a replacement for the operating system’s file structure. The main goal is to allow you do do everything with your photos and videos that you would need to do without going to the operating system and for most people that is: file renaming, moving images, deleting images. These are the main things that people venture back to the OS to do without realizing they can be done inside of LrC. With that said, there could be some design changes to make this more obvious.

The preset myth that you spoke about, is just ridiculous. People need to realize that just because you click on a preset, not only is that not cheating, but it by no means doesn't mean that's the end of the editing you can do. It's a starting point. If you like a preset, you can choose it and then edit and tweak it further depending on your own vision. That could be what they are referring to too Terry. People THINK that just because you click on a preset, you're done with the photo, and that is a BIG myth. It's a starting point. The same as clicking on Auto.

On mobile the button is called “Device” however, due to the limitations of mobile operating systems, it doesn’t quite work the same. @twingo7 7 місяців тому

@@TerryLeeWhite Hey Terry, thanks for your reply and very informative Masterclasses.
Perhaps I can explain my above comment in more detail...
      1) Keywords, I don't care about the heirarchy, all I want is a smooth syncing function, If I add a key word in LrC than sync to LR and if I do that in LR than sync to LrC but I can't get this to work. It appears Keywords I add in LR don't sync back to LrC and vice versa. But perhaps I am wrong
      2) Downloading from Cloud - All I want is to have my Lightroom Classic photos sync'd (and backed up) to LR. Not previews but full size versions so that If I login to LR on a different PC I have the full versions on it so I could download them there. There is no way I can see to do this. (I am happy to pay for cloud space), I just want to know my photo's in the cloud are BACKED UP and the simple answer I have come to is, that they are NOT; they are synced but not backed up. I would think many Adobe users would not know this and be in trouble as they think a photo synced is fully backed up.
Unfortunately the fact that Adobe in 2023 can't do map fucntion (e.g. add photos to a map), full BACKUP and some other basics in LR in 2023 is a travesty. We don't need more development functions as you state, that's what photoshop is for. WE need more library functions in LR and it doesn't seem to have them
But happy to hear your thoughts!

    • @TerryLeeWhite
      @TerryLeeWhite  7 місяців тому +3

@@twingo7 Yes, there are differences between the two products (Lr and LrC) as they are targeting different customer sets. With that said, stating that Lr doesn't have keywords is not accurate as it clearly does. Also stating that you can't download from the cloud (a myth) is also not accurate as you can. LrC doesn't sync full-resolution images to the clouds and never has. Therefore, there isn't a full-res LrC image in the cloud to download. If you want full-res images in the cloud then Add them to Lr first and they will be sync'd in their full res/format to the cloud and then downloaded to LrC.
Now on to what you actually wanted to say. The keywords between the two products use two different formats and therefore don't sync between the two. That doesn't mean that Lr doesn't have keywords as you stated (which furthers a myth), they just don't work the way you want them to as the two products were not designed to work together in that way.
Adobe's stance is that you should pick one: Lr or LrC. While you can sync to the cloud from LrC, it's is a Smart Preview and always will be as users have stated over and over again that they do NOT want their images in the cloud, pay for cloud storage and prefer to store them locally. That's what LrC does and will likely always do. So if you want your LrC images backed up in full to the cloud then you'll need to add them to Lr first and have them sync down to LrC.
If you keyword in LrC those keywords are not lost just because you sync to the cloud. You can maintain them in LrC. Keywording in Lr is for Lr users. Keywording in LrC is for LrC users. Stick to keywording in one or the other as the structures are incompatible, but don't break each other.
I imagine that Lr will continue to improve and bring more features from LrC. Today they are not the same.
Lastly, note that this video was not about pitting one against the other. This was about busting myths about both products. The problem is that some of those myths come from people who assume that Lr doesn't have certain features that it does. It wasn't about it having every feature of LrC or even a comparison of the two. Clearly, LrC has more features than Lr and Lr has some features not found in LrC.
