Keith took me under his wing when I was an Occupational Therapy intern at Hilo Hospital in 1986. We had some epic times spear fishing and playing soccer for the Hilo Shinkickers. He was a great host during my time on the Big Island. Would love to catch up with him.
Some large fish have been caught using that method. Some don't even use a pole, just a very large stick, about 30 feet long, heavy cord, and a hook that looks more like a gaff. When it's time to hang a new bait, there's no need to pull the whole rig up. Retreive the clothespin, hook another live bait, and go. If you've ever fished in Hawaii, there's a lot of fishing like this going on.

do you use a whole oama to catch the kupipi?
The oama is used to catch moana and papio, and it's used whole. For kupipi you'd need a smaller bait.

Where in Hawaii is this?
BTW, a kid caught a yellowfin tuna more than 60 pounds with a method roughly similar to this.
If only I cAn go fishing with the Caldwell’s.
Mostly oama. It's legal to catch them at night with a hand net. Just need a few for live bait. Hard to beat. Just make sure they're well aerated.
