Have you ever eaten Mahonia Berry (aka Oregon Grape)?

- Mahonia Berry, also called Oregon Grape, can be found in people’s landscape but few know the berry is in fact edible. It is not great straight off the bush but it transforms when cooked into amazing purple goodness. The plant contains berberine (golden seal’s claim to fame) which is used for stomach ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach upset, as a bitter tonic, to treat infections, and to cleanse the bowels. The berries contain less berberine than the rest of the plant. Roots and stems have the highest concentration. We are going to explore cooking with these berries and see what deliciousness can be created. The flowers in the winter are a great source of food for bees and the berries are enjoyed by birds. They're quite a lot of work but i prefer the flavour to sloes, crabapple or honeyberries..and i really love the smell of the flowers on a freezing December morning..Mahonia is one of those plants who you learn to appreciate more and more over the years..

We have these all over the south. I never knew you could eat the berries! I’d like to plant one in my yard. Can you grow them from seed-is the seed in the berries? I have read birds spread the bushes, I would assume from eating and then excreting.
I’m not sure. Mine is from my Mom’s garden where she dug a piece out to thin it.
I opened the berries and planted the seeds. We'll see if they grow! @@foreverfoodsfarm

We are in the UK and we have one Mahonia at the front garden. I didn't realise that the berries are edible. How about the leaves? Are they any good as tea or concoction? Thanks btw for sharing the info x
I’m not aware of leaf use. But definitely throw some of the berries in teas!

I didn’t think Oregon grape had thorns on the stems?? Are you sure that’s what that is???
There aren’t any thorns on the stems, just the leaves like a holly tree
Ours are just coming ripe here in northeast Alabama - made 8 mini jars of jam today.

I have some of these. Do you have any pie recipes? I can't find any.
I think they would be too seedy for a pie. I definitely think using the pulp for syrups or jellies would be good but you should definitely strain and maybe combine with a more standard berry like blue berry.

No we do not. We use these for ourselves. Not even sure if Dept of Ag considers it food. Haven’t researched that yet.

I had no idea how useful that bucket was going to be. We have been using it all summer. Right now we are using it for our fig harvest. I highly recommend one.
Will keep that in mind, but what I really need a recommendation for is a fig picker. The fruit picker I have (since it's high up on the tree) keeps breaking the figs apart before they could even make it to the bucket! lol@@foreverfoodsfarm
