That is a palace compared to the hospitals I've been locked up in. The cells are usually only about 12 feet long by about 8 feet wide. They only have a bed with a solid rubber mat and pillow. Pens and pencils are absolutely not allowed, only one supervised phone call per day, definitely no mobile devices allowed in the cell block. The standard day consists of waking up by being shouted at, given massive amounts of drugs that make you feel like you going to die, having a tiny meal, being shouted at some more, go to bed and hope you don't wake up in the morning... the best part is that it's completely legal to treat disabled people like this but its illegal to treat criminals in prison like this.

It’s a mental health ward in a private hospital. They are generally nice places depending on which hospital you choose. They are usually voluntary.
There are also mental health wards in public hospitals. These are generally involuntary and are very traumatising as they are basically jail.

You might be confusing what an Acute Psych Ward and a Residential Psych Treatment facility is. Acute Psychiatric Wards (the word Ward tells you everything you need to know) are in the hospital and they are locked units with restrictions to the patients and visitors including STAFF. A psych ward not only prevents the patient from accessing the outside but also prevents the patients from having access inside to things that they can harm themselves with. Meaning the rooms are totally empty, a bed usually attached to the ground with screws, a solid mattress with anti suffocation linen, and sometimes a pillow depending on the severity of the patients illness. Bathrooms have everything anti-self harm made, sometimes a Velcro cushion door that doesn’t even close completely. No hygiene utensils left to the patient unsupervised, and if given some soap usually will be liquid or a small bar placed in a paper /foam cup for you to use not even directly from the original bottle. You barely have toilet paper if safe for you to use. Some patients can’t even have anything at all because they will try to swallow it even if supervised. Some of them need to be restrained to their beds because of their behaviour . A Psych Residential Treatment Facility, is different, there depending on the type of treatment they offer it can be on a separate area of the hospital or even on an outside outpatient facility. Those usually are spluttered into 2 , Psychosocial Residential Treatments, or Substance Abuse Treatments, Psychosocial Residential Facilities, receive stable psychiatric patients with psychiatric conditions other than Substance Abuse, in that facility , even when prevented from escaping it, there is freedom, policy of the facility decides what the patient can have or can not, but usually they will have a regular bedroom, regular bathroom with regular hygiene utensils they can store themselves in their room, although this doesn’t mean they will have access to razors, or scissors, anything that could be used as a sharp object to inflict harm is usually removed and when needed for hygiene a nurse would be supervising the patient and will receive the item back to be stored in a locked box. There usually patients have access to the outside controlled settings like a garden or even a pool, different areas the facility may provide for the patients to relax or share time together. All of this within a controlled environment, they aren’t allowed to exit the facility into the world yet, and also they aren’t allowed to have certain things with them yet. This is done in order to prepare the patient to integrate themselves back into society when they are stable and showed stability for a certain about of weeks or months. This treatments usually last from 3 months to a year. Same thing for substance abuse specific facilities where the patients is restrained from accessing any medication or substance, but they also have regular clothes, and live in an enclosed controlled environment. The purpose of this facilities is to give treatment to patients in a less restrictive environment and prepare them to come back to regular life….they are still considered psychiatric facilities due to the fact they treat only patients with psychiatric issues, from the worse to the least worse, usually depression, eating disorders, trauma, substance or alcohol abuse, and other issues!! This is clearly the reason why you probably have access to all you have! In any psychiatric ward you would’ve ever let inside with your boots laces !! Either not you but another suicidal patient can take them out of your sight and harm themselves. If your psychiatric issue is unstable and you’re in an unstable and not safe crisis you will be deemed appropriate for an Acute Inpatient Psych facility or floor of the hospital until you do not show signs of improvement or stability you can’t be released to a less restrictive environment as the residential treatment facility or your home.

There was a waterfall near us, such a lovely thin streak of water, like a thread but white and moving. It fell from a great height, but it looked quite low, and it was half a mile away, though it did not seem fifty paces. I loved to listen to it at night, but it was then that I became so restless. Sometimes I went and climbed the mountain and stood there in the midst of the tall pines, all alone in the terrible silence, with our little village in the distance, and the sky so blue, and the sun so bright, and an old ruined castle on the mountain-side, far away. I used to watch the line where earth and sky met, and longed to go and seek there the key of all mysteries, thinking that I might find there a new life, perhaps some great city where life should be grander and richer--and then it struck me that life may be grand enough even in a psychward.

anyone in the comments saying this looks nicer than the typical psych ward and that this person is ‘lucky’… here in the uk some of our wards also look very nice, (and yes phones are allowed at all of them generally), but a nice building or facilities means nothing when the staff are at best rude and at worst further traumatising the patients. i think anyone in these comments who’s actually dealt with the mental health system & inpatient facilities should know that any psych ward is guaranteed to be horrific regardless of the budget they had when building the place.

Problems with violent crime and drugs cannot be solved until mental health is treated instead of being swept under the rug by facilities like this... In my experience, this is one of the better ones, too. You're lucky to be in one of the better facilities, most of them are not like this. The average mental illness experience, at least in the U.S., is like having dumpster juice poured on an open wound. People need help and they're being tortured and/or contained against their will and then thrown back into society worse off than before.
I just hope things change... Sorry but I needed to vent.

IN MOST CASES YOU CAN HAVE YOUR PHONE. IF UT IS RESIDENTIAL, MOST TIMES ADULTS CAN HAVE THEIR PHONES AS WELL. also at a residential program i wasbat before, we could have our phoens ubder directe super vision to call friends or family at free will. ut was a KINORS ONLY FACILITY AS WELL. keep this in minr. this is atleast how it is where i live.

I see so many comments here complaining about not being able to have electronics and other things during their psych ward stay and I get that. It’s not fun to be in a psych ward or a hospital for mental health reasons. However, I think some of the patients and family members just don’t understand exactly why these rules are in place. Everything they do or take away from you is out of concern for your own safety. Phones can be used as a weapon, earbuds can be used as a weapon against yourself, clothing with strings can be used as a weapon. You can’t have complete privacy because it’s the staff’s job to make sure you aren’t going to harm yourself. As someone who works at a hospital and specifically sits with behavioral and mental health patients, I c an understand the frustrations, but trust me, we are doing what we can to make sure you are safe. It’s not a perfect system but it’s better than the alternative of letting you hurt yourself or worse. Mental health is important 💜

In Illinois if you are having mental health issues you can go to thorek hospital and tell them you can't be by yourself and you're thinking of self harm and ask them to put you in a nursing home. If they deny you go to another hospital like south shore hospital that used to be known as Norwegian and tell them you can't be by yourself you need a nursing home to live in like Lydia healthcare in Robbins Illinois or Albany care and tell them you don't feel safe by yourself and ask for Seroquel medication at bedtime
