I used my A-maze-N 12" smoker tube for jerky yesterday for the first time. It worked flawlessly! Highly recommend a smoker tube. I have a Traeger 780 that does not have the "super smoker" mode so I bought the smoker tube. I will add a couple comments from my rookie experience. 1. I filled the 12" tube completely full, didn't try to pack it or anything, just filled it. After 5 hours the smoker tube was still going, and my jerky was done, so I dumped out the tube to save the unburned pellets. I was using Pit Boss hickory pellets by the way. Another side note, I let the smoker tube do its magic for about 2 hours before I fired up the Traeger. The smoker tube box says the 12" tube will last for 4 hours, I swear mine would have gone 6 if I'd let it keep going. I guess it is an Amazing A-maze-N smoker tube! 2. In all the videos I've watched I've heard a few people mention the possibility of a bitter taste from too much smoke, and I just couldn't wrap my head around that concept, that is until I experienced it. So I let the smoker tube work for a couple hours, then fired up the Traeger for a couple hours and those pieces of jerky that were still not quite done were left in the Traeger while I pulled the majority of the jerky out, and turned the Traeger off. I had some pieces that were directly above the smoker tube, and when I could tell all the jerky was done I decided to taste that special piece of jerky that had been right above the smoker tube. WOW! Was it ever smoky! I mean waaaaay too smoky, as in licking a hickory smoke ashtray smoky. So just a word of caution, it is possible to add too much smoky goodness to your food. But that mistake was mine, not the smoker tube or the Traeger. Good luck to all of you and happy smoker tube smoking!
One more note from the smoker tube rookie, the tube gets hot from the burning pellets and I placed jerky quite close to the smoker tube, DON'T DO THAT! Leave some space between the tube and the item you're smoking. The heat from the smoker tube was enough to turn the jerky black. Be careful, just give the tube some space.
I didn't have a heat gun or a blow torch and too cheap to buy one. I just got 4 kingsford charcoal briquets and put them on my weber ash pan and lit them up. Let them get nice and white and got some metal tongs and put one white coal into the wide mouth in the smoking tube. It fit perfectly. Let it sit in the tube for about 10 mins and the pellets caught. I did blow on the tube just a little bit but it worked! I will say not to fill the tube all the way to the top as when you lay it down its possible for your coal to fall out. This was the 1st time I used this thing and worked great. It gave me 6 good hours of straight smoke.
I love this thing for my briskets, pork butts, ribs and cold smoking cheese. The only downside is the creosote build up, but a torch and a wire brush makes short work of that problem.
I love this thing. The issue I have with my Traeger when using 100% flavor wood is temperature consistency. With this baby I can still use 100% flavor wood in the tube, and then use something like BBQer’s Delight in the hopper that has more oak for consistency, and I can still get great smoke with better temperature regulation. Awesome product.
I got rid of my pellet smoker and now use a real coal/wood smoker. The food taste 100 times better and it doesn't have that house fire taste to it. No matter what kind and brand pellets I tried, the food tasted odd and not too good.
Disappointed when I bought and tried using it several times,i keep the flame going for 10 mins and I get a good smoke as along as it outside the smoker, soon as I throw the tube inside and shit lid it dies,I don’t know how yours keep a good air circulation to stay alive inside the grill
The real problem with the smoker going out is moisture in the pellets. It’s a 5 min fix to cure that problem. Fill either a tubular or serpentine smoke generator with pellets, then dump into a microwave safe bowl. Microwave the pellets for a couple of minutes until the pellets are hot and steaming. Quite a bit of the absorbed moisture will be driven out. Dump the drier pellets back into the smoke generator and proceed as usual. I’ve never had a smoke generator die after microwaving the pellets.
If you set a pellet smoker properly you don’t need the tube. I recommend using it for cold smoking or a gas/charcoal grill that wants smoke enhancement. Effective tool of used properly.
Put the pellets in a bowl, then microwave for 30 seconds. Mix, then microwave for another 30 seconds. This will remove any moisture. Put into the tube then light as he shows you in the video. Keep a close eye on them in the microwave and only do 30 seconds at a time.
No need to waste money on a traeger or smoker. This seems like it puts out more smoke then the smoker. Any benefit in the traeger or would you have saved the money and just bought the tube?
Have you tried wood chips in this tube? Will they stay lit? How long can you expect the smoke duration from this 12 inch model using wood chips?I might try the wood chips. I can tell a noticeable difference in smoke smell using wood chips compared to pellets. The wood chips have a way more natural smell to then compared to pellets.
I stop using my pellet smoker because the pellets give an odd and not very good taste to the food. The smoke tube does improves the taste of the food using wood chips. Do yourself a favor and get rid of those nasty pellets and use real wood for a taste sensation. (Yes I tried all kinds of different pellets)
@@39zack There is nothing strange about wood chips and sawdust being compressed. Haven't you ever seen press wood lumber? Compressed wood is very common.
If you place the tube under the thermo sensing rod as you did... You will influence the temperature of the grill and the associated auger feed. In other words....place it along the back or front to allow the smoke to circulate with influencing the temperature sensor. 😎
Windy Knot I see your point but I’ve asked the question many times to Traeger and been told numerous times that the auger speed is based on timing, not temp. Additionally, the smoke tube generates very little heat, it’s more of a smolder that creates the smoke, not an open flame. I typically put it towards the back of the chamber though, not where I put it in this video, just wanted it to be more visible for the video.
lixsajoe The Traeger is still an excellent wood fired grill. With or without using the tube, my results are excellent so I can’t complain. There are so many “pellet grills” these days, if I was buying one new, I would certainly explore all options.
Mike Smith you’re right the traeger is an excellent wood pellet grill. It definitely helped step up my bbq game. My only complaint is the amount of smoke that comes out when you’re on the smoke setting. I get the smoke rings on my tri tip and brisket the way I like. I think I’ll try this and see if it adds a thicker smoke ring and more flavor.
so basically this tell you the truth that Traeger is not really a smoker, you got to use a tube just to smoke the meat while the Traeger is just cooking.
Jamison Jones I tried once to light it with a match, no dice. I would make the investment for a butane torch lighter or propane torch, it makes easy work out of lighting it.
I wish I had the extra $1,200 to throw at a trager that did everything for me. Instead I've got a 55 gallon drum smoker that doesn't have a power cord.
There's a number of other pellet grills available, even better quality than Traeger. If I could do it all over again, I'd go with another Pellet grill. My 2 cents.

Thanks for the review, I tried to use mine and couldn't get it to start smoking, I now know what I was doing wrong. Thanks again!!!
Mike, thank you for your product review. I look forward to hearing your opinion on products and I trust your expertise.

Finally someone that has a grill that looks like they actually use it.
I use mine with wood chips I feel like adds more of the real wood flavor like you get from a stick burner
Exactely what i wanted to see, just ordered 3 thanks for the video!
Love it

The torch is awesome. But my go to use my heat gun. Takes a bit longer, but it works like a charm. And no more needing to buy gas cylinders.
I went the same route. Less than $20 at Harbor Freight........by the time the smoker is ready......so is the tube
Same. I think it works better than a torch.

@@billycole852 Nope! Pellet smoke taste like crap compared to coal and real wood.

Tou have a great speaking voice. Well done.👍
what is the secret of not allowing your pellets to smoke without catching full fire ? I keep having that problem.
Precisely what I wanted to see!! 👍🏾
Nice video . Is the smoke constant ?
Yes, very much so. I’ve used it dozens of times and it goes for 4 hours non stop.
Use a heat gun to light the pellets. Way easier and no propane needed just an outlet
what if you just use this on a regular grill to smoke? is it still just as affective
yes. you can use it on a gas grill you can even cold smoke with no heat.
how many wish he woulda took it horizontal and scooped it in to fill it fast???
anyways, thx for the review
My anxiety started to creep out of me!!!
I got fustrated real quick . lol
Great video!
Is there a lot of ash created? Do you just let it burn out on the traeger once you’re done cooking?
Ryan Peters I usually just let it burn out. It produces a little ash but not too much.
Great, thanks Mike!
Have you used this to cold smoke cheese

Can this help with the development of a bark on say a brisket?
No. Bark is determined by the rub you apply. 👍🏾

Mine keeps going out as well. I used a torch and and let go for 15 minutes.

I like the tray much better tube gives off too much smoke. tray will give up to 10 plus hrs of smoke on less pellets than the tube.

I have not tried wood chips but am willing to. :)
I don't think wood chips would work.
Wood chips do work in these tubes, but they don't last as long as pellets. Pellets smolder for 5-6 hours in mine and only 1.5-2 hours with wood chips.
My issue is, i can't keep the temperature below 30
So what your saying is instead of buying a overpriced Traeger you can use it on any grill?
I use my oven as a smoker with my A-MAZ-N smoker tube. My wife hates it because I dirty up her oven :))
....In the house? Lol, what the...
Oooh! Like Brad said, "In the house!?" Man, I ain't liking the thought of that either. I'm siding with the wifey on this one. 😂

Strange as wood pellets are just compressed wood
@@39zack There is nothing strange about wood chips and sawdust being compressed. Haven't you ever seen press wood lumber? Compressed wood is very common.
I actually mix in small wood chips with pellets for the extra kick of real wood. If chips small enough they smoke beautiful.
Why would you use a smoke tube with a treager
john marcantel for extra smoke really, that’s all. Still to this day use it.
john marcantel cause a Traeger doesn’t come with a cold smoker. Duh I own a Traeger and am gonna give this a try👌
Have you ever used wood chips in the tube?
Pedro Colon no I have not. I’ve been told it doesn’t work with wood chips.
It will work with chips but the smoke will not last very long compared to pellets.
Damn man. Have you ever cleaned that heat plate? lol

Isnt the white smoke dirty or bad for the food?
It means you elected the new pop lol.

Defeats the purpose of buying a traeger smoker! I have one but it just doesn’t smoke meat the way I’d like. Hope this adds some flavor to the beef.
