Three cheers to professor Shady Nasser. *You are truly an academic* and that is how a true academic presents to his/her own students, grounding them on *methodology* [or 'scientific' approach] not creating blind believers. Your personal beliefs are *irrelevant* but methodology. And these rules applies to all religions, faiths and beliefs. Enjoyed every second of it, brings back memories of my wonderful teachers of my college. Edit: If anyone doing undergrad studies in humanities this is the way to approach your subject matter. Explain your terminology, set back and move out of your box, ask questions and counter questions, look for or bring primary sources to prove your claims. This a wonderful teacher / student conversation in academic level. Do not follow what your ancestors told you or your clan follows. Yes, apologists having PhDs do so, but not true academics as they guide you for your own conclusions wit myriad of counter questions forcing you to find answers. And this is no exception to Christians, Bible, Hindus, Buddhists or anyone else. Loved it!!!

@@kingkamaro9442 Because it is Farid attacking Dr Nasser. It includes the usual Muslim lack of context. It also to Farid's credit contains researched and properly referenced criticism. However Farid does accidently point out a serious weakness of the Arabic language. He shows three Arabic words with distinct meanings that differ only by two tiny marks. Sadly most Muslims will hate Prof. Nasser for speaking about the Quran this way. Today's Muslim apologists portray the Quran as a flawless product when it is clear from academia that it is not. At least Muslim scholars in the past were humble enough to admit that they did the best they could to compile the 'word of God'.

Why would a deity who is supposed to be the creator of the whole universe create a religion that is so un-universal (is that even a word?), a religion that would be so hard for people to understand and follow, unless you live in the 7th century Arabia. Here is what I mean: Why would the creator of the universe start a religion in a language that is spoken by less than 10% of the world’s population AND THEN make it a law that the book he dictated to an illiterate merchant turned warlord shall never ever be translated to any other language? Why would the creator of the universe make everybody face Mecca when praying. Doesn’t he know that the earth is round, and we will one day become a space-faring nation? Why would the creator of the universe make it an obligation for all Muslims to visit an obscure shire in the middle of the desert at least once in a lifetime? Couldn’t he foresee the logistical problems it will make? And the deaths that it will cause (Stampedes happen almost every other year. In 2015, 2144 people died due to a massive stampede)? Wouldn’t Allah know how hard it would be for Asians for example to grow a beard? (Yes, a beard is recommended in the Hadith)? Wouldn’t Allah know how impractical the Hijab would be in other climates? Why doesn’t Allah appreciate the diverse cultures of humankind? Why would Allah feel the need to apply a common denominator to all Muslims, and then choosing pre-Islamic customs as the common denominator? Questions needed to be answered or shouldn’t even have to be questioned if Allah was really a real God .
Using a book to transmit information for a divine being is so hilariously inefficient and stupid it should automatically dismiss any religion that puts that forward.
@@BillRevis well that should apply only to Islam that claims their book is directly given from heaven to Mohamed / the direct word of Allah . The Bible has no such statement but divine inspiration. Look at Young Earth Creationists, Ultra-Orthodox Jews etc. They are every bit unbending as hardline Islamists.
@@dulcettones5536 The Islamic belief about revelations and the Christian one are completely different! The Bible can be said to be the word of God because of the following reasons. Through it God speaks to human beings through his son, Jesus Christ.(Heb 1:1-2) All scripture was inspired by God .(2 Timothy 3:16) The human authors/writes were under the influence of the Holy Spirit. Unlike the Quran which Muslims claim that it is sent directly from heavens to Mohamed and there is no evidence that Allah really sent a book ! The probability of the Quran being written by Mohamed exceeds the other hypothesis since there is no historical , archaeological or even witnesses that support Mohamed claim about Allah’s revelations!

This is such a refreshing approach to analyzing the Quran, compared to all the Islamic bashing talks that I, an apostate and an atheist, have heard and quite frankly, gotten quite tired of. An honest and straightforward analysis from someone who obviously knows his stuff and most important, is not prejudiced by an anti Islamic perspective.
Dr Shady is a fantastic personality, very friendly and humble spirit despite his such a high education and credentials! The whole respect and blessings!!!!❤
I think he showed me that my understanding of the Koran and history is a lot more complicated than I thought it was, with varying beliefs within Islam not necessarily being right or wrong. Thank you. I think I will be slower to judge, and to think I know something. I wonder if I really know enough to get it right!
I wish he could talk more about how the theories and ideas about the Quran evolved over time. Also about the dark period between when the Quran supposedly was compiled and later scholars trying to understand. For example he uses LOL, you wouldn’t expect people in 1950 to under it but you would expect some inference of it in 2050. Not a lot of people talk about why it seemed like muslim scholars were rediscovering Islam 200 years later, not building upon prior knowledge. I don’t think warfare is a sufficient answer.
I would think, based on what I gather, because not many people knew how to write Arabic, grammatical Arabic wasn't standardized either. It reminds me of a UA-cam clip I saw where it was mentioned that it was common for households to have 3 shakers, one for salt, one for pepper, and the third one was a mystery. Because no one decided to write it down, now people aren't sure what was in that third shaker, so info can get lost pretty easily.
It was not written by Mohamed.. he just translated it from Syriac books who were Christian Arab books which were at the possession of waraqa bnu nawfal his teacher then Mohamed got an idea of declaring himself officially a prophet when he was very sure of himself thus after going to Medina there he invented that aggressive part of Qur'an contrary to the first verses he recited in Mecca
This is high quality content, thank you. I only wish it was this polite, level headed and truly exploratory when apologists talk/ debate topics such as these and many others.

Ooh, I like this guy. Yes. Academics, historians, and scientists have no business with god. We work with evidence not faith. Faith belongs to the theologians.
But faith must be based on something tangible or else it's just blind faith. Jesus for example performed many miracles in public before asking strangers to trust him. The apostles saw Jesus resurrected and their willingness to die or be tortured to death over that claim is what allowed Christianity to expand, otherwise it would have died with Jesus ( if faking the resurrection of a publicly executed leader was so easy, we would have countless successful examples yet we only have one if you want to consider Jesus case a fake).

I found particularly interesting Dr Nasser's answers on how literary asthetics have differed over time and the speech of god nuances (I assume he talks with Khalil Andani at Harvard who talks about the latter issue on Twitter). Shady has done very interesting work on the canonization process. His first book focused on how certain readings became shadhdh (non-canonical) and the second published last year explores what we can learn from Ibn Mujahid's book of the seven readings. Of course, certain bozo apologists try to paint him as some kind of polemicist in disguise, but I hope it's clear from his manner in this interview that his work is concerned with questions of academic interest. Other academics certainly admire and appreciate his work.
I'd already heard it and have seen these attack points all before. Here are a couple of responses on reddit to Farid's video: 1 of 2: "The general consensus on Aasim: trustworthy but bad retention. Weak on unique transmissions. There's a compilation of opinions on him here, and even on the page that Farid displayed [2:09] they're calling him 'unretentive' 'dismissed'."
2 of 2: "On the al Tabari one Nasser admitted the mistake and corrected himself in his second book p. 107. Tabari did criticise the maaliki reading, but it was maalaka that he said was against consensus so that's the only bit on the screenshot page that Nasser got wrong. Sure, it's a mistake (van Putten guessed Nasser may have used the edition with the typo there), but the overall point stands whereby Nasser gives numerous examples of Tabari criticising variants that became canonical. Nasser did make some mistakes about Ibn Attiyah, and the biography entries for Qunbul (Farid himself found that there's at least one edition of the source with the same mistake, albeit not the edition Shady cited) and Ibn Dhakwan. He wrote two massive books, so while he should have done better, it's going to have some mistakes. Neither Farid nor his friends have been able to address the reports on other readers and transmitters, so it barely affects the point Nasser is making. Nasser was essentially correct that Asim was often weakened, as van Putten confirmed when this came up before, but Nasser explicitly says that he is only listing negative reports and explains why afterwards. It's part of his theory on why tawatur became so important, that this aspect of hadith methodology wasn't wholey viable for the readers and transmitters. Nasser even explicitly states right after the list that he has been selective and most reports for each reader say they were trustworthy, which you'd never guess from Farid's hatchet job. But Farid loves to straw man people. And as for the ahruf hadith stuff - another straw man as Dr Hishami pointed out after confirming with Nasser himself. Nasser carefully explains in the book that he is not seeking to establish its authenticity or otherwise, but rather he is interested in when it was starting to circulate widely. Van Putten also backed him against Farid on this (except for on the Ubayy version). Incidentally, Van Putten has also called out Farid in the past for a dishonest misreading Ibn al Jazari."

You can do that with any book. I mean Vedas are twice as old as the Qur'an and they are still in deep analysis. Does that say something about the Vedas? How about Torahs? Lotus Sutra? It is human nature to seek patterns even if it was never intended.
Dr. Shady Nasser, as usual being one of my favourite scholars. Thanks for putting interviews out such as these. This mechanic to approach the text from the perspective that it has to be true, thus we'll find the right explanation is not unique to Islam's interpretation of the Qu'ran. However Farid does accidently point out a serious weakness of the Arabic language. He shows three Arabic words with distinct meanings that differ only by two tiny marks. Why would a deity who is supposed to be the creator of the whole universe create a religion that is so un-universal (is that even a word?), a religion that would be so hard for people to understand and follow, unless you live in the 7th century Arabia. Here is what I mean:
Why would the creator of the universe start a religion in a language that is spoken by less than 10% of the world’s population AND THEN make it a law that the book he dictated to an illiterate merchant turned warlord shall never ever be translated to any other language?
@tom hamad Every word in your comment is wrong , deceptive and promote of propaganda! One thing can destroy your whole argument: Where in the Quran it says that other followers of religions will enter paradise ?

Brillant from Dr Shady Nasser.. bringing the Quran to what it is, simply..!!!!!
So interesting. What an insightful man. And such humility from him in his bearing
Even Al Razi -one of the most brilliant polymaths of the Islamic Golden Age (He lived in Persia in the 10th Century A.D. approx) is said to have pointed out the manifold errors in the Koran whether factual or grammatical- that its literary stylistics are poor and that there were loads of other writings vastly superior to it in many languages. He also pointed out the phenomenon of Muslims becoming enraged and violent if any of their beliefs were challenged!
Doesn’t seem like much has changed 😅
Keep going AP. Your content has was good to start with, and gets better and better.
A local High School's football team actaully kicked a 20 yard field goal using a Quran during practice back in 2013. It was a glorious site to see.
People are leaving Islam.
@tom hamad You must be fond of pedophilia as Muhammad, the "best example" of Islam, is the pedophile priest of Islam and the Quran sanctions pedophilia as "marriage" in 33:49 and 65:4. So shameful and disgusting.
@tom hamad you wanted to have relationships with Aisha aged girls and not think of it as perverted and sinful?
@Tom hamad 🤣 you are the type of Judas (not called, not chosen but a seller) or a type of a prodigal son. Hadn’t been saved 😢
In Islam paradise there are 72 Aishas waiting
@tom hamad Islam actually condones and sanctions pedophilia as "marriage" of girls as young as babies. You're either ignorant or just dumb.
What I learned from Western debaters on the art or debate is that they put their opinions and personal beliefs to the side and remain consistently academic the entire time. That’s what this professor is doing and it’s something most muslim debaters cannot seem to do.
True as a muslim i cannot imagine debates between muslim scholars and ex muslim atheist in mosques not even in the distant future .. priests and atheists debates in church opened a new world for me where everyone was so decent and polite .. in my journey the ex christian debates helped me more than the ex muslim movement which is all about shouting , abusing and ridiculing .

Really wonderful to hear an honest Qur'an scholar. It is great that he has been able to get on with his work with integrity unlike Yasir Qadhi. Yasir Qadhi just began to express or hint at the problems with the history of the Qur'an and the Muslims were about to give at least the academic version of a lynching.
Dr Nasser is incredibly knowledgeable and honest and expressive.

Let's hope the best for Dr. Shady Nasser. I'm a bit concern with his safety after this video
Do you mean in regards with salafists?
May Allah protects him.
He has many many talks along these lines at conferences that have been posted, and has talked with other people on these topics. He does not seem very concerned. I love listening to him, a true academic!

The fact that a book takes thousands of years of deep analysis to try to understand says something…

It also appears in other religions, such as Christianity f.e. I remember doing the exact same thing as a fundamental christian towards the Bible.
The bias of a religious faith towards it's sacred texts can not be underestimated.
I very much like the academic approach 👌🏼

That explains why this arab muslim that I had a discussion with was not finding anything wrong with the grammatical error of the Quran. He was like... even though this one is masculine and this one is feminine, the thought is the same.
That is because they have different views.
According to the Sunni Muslims, the Qur'an is uncreated, which means that it has always existed. Since the physical, the "earthly" Qur'an was composed after the death of Muhammad, how do we know that the order of the surahs in the earthly Qur'an is the same than in the Heavenly Qur'an ?
There have never been any incident in which any of the Companions reciting in any order that violated the order of the verses showed to us by the Prophet (saws).
the Quran is arranged as it is now would be that this is how Allah wanted it to be. Before his death, the Angel Gabriel visited the Prophet to go over the Quran and tell him to place which parts where and in what order.

@@RG-107 "the Angel Gabriel visited the Prophet to go over the Quran" There must be a solid source, a hadith, about that otherwise it's like quoting a novel of Karen Armstrong. Here's a hadith that contradicts your claim: Narrated Zaid bin Thabit: " _Abu Bakr said (to me), `Umar has come to my and said, 'A great number of Qaris of the Holy Qur'an were killed on the day of the battle of Al-Yamama, and I am afraid that the casualties among the Qaris of the Qur'an may increase on other battle-fields whereby a large part of the Qur'an may be lost.
