I first heard this song in NC. Years later, after ending up on the streets of New Orleans, a stranger came along and offered me help. I ended up getting help in a hospital, and one day another stranger told me that GOD must need you for something so HE sent you here. That afternoon I heard this song on the radio, and realized it was a message to me sent long ago and ignored, but now I was able to hear the words. They were the perfect explanation of what I was experiencing. I cried a tear, HE wiped it dry. I was confused, HE cleared my mind, etc. Every situation described in these lyrics explains the GOD I now have in my life!! Somehow HE NEEDED ME then, and still does. I still weap with joy when I hear Anne sing this. I believe she’s speaking to GOD. What a wonderful hymn!!

Woke the last few mornings singing this song to myself, not sure why but thought I'd come and find the record .....then saw your post. My Mum died when I was 22, the event not only changed my life but the way I look at life, 35yrs have passed since that day and while I only see her in pictures and memories in my head I feel she is with me most of the time, I try and live my life in a way she would approve but have messed up a few times!. There is no love greater than a mothers love and the is no person greater than your mother, I am sorry to hear of your loss but life must go on, leave the sorrow behind you and think of the joyful times you had with her and move forward, she will be there with you, as mine is still with me.

I am also a recovering addict alcoholic. 3 months ago I took an AA chip for 14 years. I have been searching diligently for a mate who would love me back. I have been alone for 16 years. I finally found for her and she loves me back. A different perspective on this song is that even though I have been clean and sober for over 14 years I have been at the end of my rope trying to find a reason to continue living. It is interesting to me this song refers in the title to what she needed, but the lyrics refer to what she has given me. She has given me strength when I was at the end.

This song took 11 weeks to get to number 1 on the Billboard charts after debuting at #35. But it was in the top 40 for an incredible 23 weeks (almost half a year!). Such a simple lyric and melody which adds to it's brilliance. Anne Murray figured it would be a hit after breaking down in tears at her first attempt at singing it.

My dad was dying from lung cancer and one Sunday we all went to church. I remember sitting in the third row from the front, on the right side of the church, the side upon which sat the podium from which Pastor James Wilch would deliver his sermons. It was a beautiful Sunday Morning and someone had told Pastor that my dad had not been able to come inside. During his sermon, which was about how people abandon God and his love until they truly need him, he mentioned my dad. When I was at the lowest point in my life, and going thru a divorce, my now husband did all of these things for me. We needed each other. This song means so much to me and makes me realize how much I appreciate my husband and how far I've come since that dark time in my life.

You Needed Me used to be one of those songs I hated growing up (especially since it was played so many times during the seventies and eighties), but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized how beautiful the lyrics actually are.
Mom would sing this ... she was getting older and needed help but never asked or said she needed help ....but strangely she would sing this when it would come on the radio and look at me and smile ... and I think she was telling me she needed me and as time went on the words became so so right as she lapsed into confusion and it seems I did the things in the lyrics for her without knowing until I saw them in print ..keeping her dignity and at home out of a nursing home ... This song always touched my heart. In the late 70s I was saved/born again, the tail end of the Jesus Movement in history from the Baby Boomers. It was the era of the hippies, rejecting materialism, seeking truth, wondering what is of true value? The Lord drew many of that generation and I was one. Gave my life to Christ at a Billy Graham crusade. Have not been the same since. When I heard this song it was a reminder of how Christ literally changed my life. I was one of those you would have said "Oh, she will never amount to anaything - abused, bitter, used..." But God saw me hurting, stumbling, needing Him. He loved me. He came to earth to save me from the sin that was eating me up. I pray this new generation will reach out to Him. He loves them too. With Jesus, the real Jesus, your life is worth everything. He gave His life's blood to save you and have you with Him. God bless.

God what a beautiful song ... I was born in 89 and wish I was alive during this time, before Justin Bieber and 1 Erection. I was but only for a few years. It seemed like such a happier time in the world. We have come a long way in terms of politics and same sex marriages but it still seemed like a much happier time back in 1978. Did such a place ever exist? I wish my beloved grandparents were still alive and we could have fun days at our family cottage on the lake again, driving there while this music would play and I wouldn't have a care in the world. My grandfather was devastated when the love of his life passed away and he went almost 2 years later but I know they're happily reunited in heaven. Anne Murray's voice just makes everything better.

Stephen R I too was born in '89 (course, if it was just 89, I'd have seen _a lot_ of things...) and I've got to say that the timing seems pretty good. I mean, we get to experience almost all the great things due to the fact that this media, which we are using right now, exists. Plus, we are at a good age for video games. Old enough to know the classics and young enough to be able to fully enjoy what will soon be. The kids that are under 15, heck even 18, just won't appreciate it as much. They were thrown into all this after it was set up. WE know what it was like not having 25+ m.b. download speed. Now, yes older generations had their own moments, just as these teen-somethings will have theirs. We are not special for that. But I'm saying that, if given the chance to travel back to 1978 as my current age (losing all ability to place wagers and the like to "cheat" a better life of course), I don't think I'd take it. And sure, things may have been simpler. But that doesn't mean the world was any better. There has always been the suffering, the violence, the hatred that there is now. The groups that it was against have changed, yes, but it was still there. It's human nature at its core. I'm not saying that we can't get past that, though. Just that it will take an exuberant amount of effort. But the tough things, the things that are truly worth having, are going to take more effort. Cliche, I know, but true nonetheless. Used again and again _because_ it is so true and felt by so many. But I ramble on... The point is, we can't go back, but we can change what will be (again, cliched as ever was). So don't wish to live in an older era. You are half way there with the internet. Take the steps and support up-and-coming music that is similar.

I first heard this song in NC. Years later, after ending up on the streets of New Orleans, a stranger came along and offered me help. I ended up getting help in a hospital, and one day another stranger told me that GOD must need you for something so HE sent you here. That afternoon I heard this song on the radio, and realized it was a message to me sent long ago and ignored, but now I was able to hear the words. They were the perfect explanation of what I was experiencing. I cried a tear, HE wiped it dry. I was confused, HE cleared my mind, etc. Every situation described in these lyrics explains the GOD I now have in my life!! Somehow HE NEEDED ME then, and still does. I still weap with joy when I hear Anne sing this. I believe she’s speaking to GOD. What a wonderful hymn!!

Woke the last few mornings singing this song to myself, not sure why but thought I'd come and find the record .....then saw your post. My Mum died when I was 22, the event not only changed my life but the way I look at life, 35yrs have passed since that day and while I only see her in pictures and memories in my head I feel she is with me most of the time, I try and live my life in a way she would approve but have messed up a few times!. There is no love greater than a mothers love and the is no person greater than your mother, I am sorry to hear of your loss but life must go on, leave the sorrow behind you and think of the joyful times you had with her and move forward, she will be there with you, as mine is still with me.

I am also a recovering addict alcoholic. 3 months ago I took an AA chip for 14 years. I have been searching diligently for a mate who would love me back. I have been alone for 16 years. I finally found for her and she loves me back. A different perspective on this song is that even though I have been clean and sober for over 14 years I have been at the end of my rope trying to find a reason to continue living. It is interesting to me this song refers in the title to what she needed, but the lyrics refer to what she has given me. She has given me strength when I was at the end.

This song took 11 weeks to get to number 1 on the Billboard charts after debuting at #35. But it was in the top 40 for an incredible 23 weeks (almost half a year!). Such a simple lyric and melody which adds to it's brilliance. Anne Murray figured it would be a hit after breaking down in tears at her first attempt at singing it.

My dad was dying from lung cancer and one Sunday we all went to church. I remember sitting in the third row from the front, on the right side of the church, the side upon which sat the podium from which Pastor James Wilch would deliver his sermons. It was a beautiful Sunday Morning and someone had told Pastor that my dad had not been able to come inside. During his sermon, which was about how people abandon God and his love until they truly need him, he mentioned my dad. He said, "Mr. Dietrich is so sick, that he cannot come into the church, but he loves God so much, that he is sitting outside the church in his red truck, so he could be close to God. This is what undying love is all about. Soon Gene will be gone, but let no one say he doesn't love Jesus!"

This song always touched my heart. In the late 70s I was saved/born again, the tail end of the Jesus Movement in history from the Baby Boomers. It was the era of the hippies, rejecting materialism, seeking truth, wondering what is of true value?
The Lord drew many of that generation and I was one. Gave my life to Christ at a Billy Graham crusade. Have not been the same since. When I heard this song it was a reminder of how Christ literally changed my life. I was one of those you would have said "Oh, she will never amount to anaything - abused, bitter, used..." But God saw me hurting, stumbling, needing Him. He loved me. He came to earth to save me from the sin that was eating me up. I pray this new generation will reach out to Him. He loves them too. With Jesus, the real Jesus, your life is worth everything. He gave His life's blood to save you and have you with Him. God bless.

Each tear you have shed for your mom represents a joyful memory you have of your mom, you should see that sadness in that light. This song has a special meaning to me. I had hit the bottom, after a divorce, while stationed at CCK AB Taiwan 1977 - 1979. One of my co-workers picked me up and took care of me. We fell in love and 35 years later we are still together. I discovered this song after my father had passed away this year. Today is Christmas, and it’s particularly difficult not having him here. But listening to this song and thinking of him brings me joy to my heart. He was the most selfless and kind soul and I’m always so thankful to him for providing me with the best life possible. If anyone has experienced losing a parent, I pray you heal and are able to think of them while reminiscing on memories of them this holiday season ❤

God what a beautiful song ... I was born in 89 and wish I was alive during this time, before Justin Bieber and 1 Erection. I was but only for a few years. It seemed like such a happier time in the world. We have come a long way in terms of politics and same sex marriages but it still seemed like a much happier time back in 1978. Did such a place ever exist? I wish my beloved grandparents were still alive and we could have fun days at our family cottage on the lake again, driving there while this music would play and I wouldn't have a care in the world. My grandfather was devastated when the love of his life passed away and he went almost 2 years later but I know they're happily reunited in heaven. Anne Murray's voice just makes everything better.

I too was born in '89 (course, if it was just 89, I'd have seen _a lot_ of things...) and I've got to say that the timing seems pretty good. I mean, we get to experience almost all the great things due to the fact that this media, which we are using right now, exists. Plus, we are at a good age for video games. Old enough to know the classics and young enough to be able to fully enjoy what will soon be. The kids that are under 15, heck even 18, just won't appreciate it as much. They were thrown into all this after it was set up. WE know what it was like not having 25+ m.b. download speed.
Now, yes older generations had their own moments, just as these teen-somethings will have theirs. We are not special for that. But I'm saying that, if given the chance to travel back to 1978 as my current age (losing all ability to place wagers and the like to "cheat" a better life of course), I don't think I'd take it. And sure, things may have been simpler. But that doesn't mean the world was any better. There has always been the suffering, the violence, the hatred that there is now. The groups that it was against have changed, yes, but it was still there. It's human nature at its core.
I'm not saying that we can't get past that, though. Just that it will take an exuberant amount of effort. But the tough things, the things that are truly worth having, are going to take more effort. Cliche, I know, but true nonetheless. Used again and again _because_ it is so true and felt by so many.
But I ramble on... The point is, we can't go back, but we can change what will be (again, cliched as ever was). So don't wish to live in an older era. You are half way there with the internet. Take the steps and support up-and-coming music that is similar.

When I was 5 this song came on TV it was the most beautiful song I had ever heard my mom was talk n bout how she dont try and do like the other singers and where all that flassy stuff ,her voice so awesome I'll never forget me and mom standing n awww ,my mother died when I was 10 and every time I hear this song the buty of it makes me cry and remember mom and I stand listen to it ,it has brought back wonderful memories I feel like mom is still with me listen to this song, God bless u Ann murry I have loved u for 45 yrs
