Tommy Bolin was my first concert, he was the opening band for Peter Framptom at Mile High stadium in 1976 I was 15 years old. I am 62 now and still listen to Tommys music all the time and being from Denver I can tell you he is still a household name around here!

Yes, as you said, Tommy was the total package, a very tasteful player. Jeff Beck admired the heck out of Tommy. After hearing Spectrum, Jeff went towards jazz fusion for his next few albums.

Crazy story. I saw Tommy w the James Gang in 1973. Never been so blown away by a guitarist in my life to this day. And I've seen everybody. A few years later he was scheduled to play Charlotte Coliseum on the Jeff Beck tour and I was elated to get to see him again, (opening for that hack Jeff Beck right?) Show was scheduled for December 12, 1976. My friend and I had tickets in hand. He died in Miami of an overdose on December 4th so the show never happened. Such an amazing talent and I will have the memory of that James Gang show with me forever.

I met Tommy's nephew many years ago. He lived in San Jose and used to hang out at the same neighborhood bar as I did. I never knew he was his nephew until one day he came in and had some old records and he knew I played and he goes "have you ever heard of Tommy Bolin?"....I literally looked at him like dude WTF??? Are you serious? Sadly he passed away at 33. Stratus from Ebbets Field...I mean come on those riffs and that solo still gives me goosebumps to this day.

Cheers for keeping the flame burning for Tommy and his music. A monster player who is sometimes not given the recognition he so rightly earned. From Quadrant 4 to Stratus and Owed to G with DP and many more I believe he had only just started to show us what was to come ...... Fly on Tommy!

Your rendition of "OWED 2 G" is...Tommy was n a few before ZEF. American Standard-1967(after the toilets), Energy-1971(with Jeff Cook, vocals). Tommy would play often with whoever during '70's. Best shows I remember were Boulder Canyon, CU, DU, Mile High PoP, Mammoth, and before joining James Gang, a 3.2 dump (Different Drummer). Tommy's enhancements r creatively, AWESOME. His fusion interests included the band NOVA. His session work with other's phenomenal. Talk about a cat that strummed a Strat with LOVE, that's Tommy. Best time w/Tommy was after Deep Purple show(Denver Auditorium Arena). Cruised around after show n limo w/ a Rock Star, homegrown. My admiration is jolted when people "discover" his talent. Your many instructional's do it to me the same way.THANK U, David, 4 passing the torches!!!

Tommy was a guest musician on the debut album of Moxy, a great Canadian hard rock band. Moxy had some great hard rock albums in the 70s. Even though Tommy isn't on the album, Moxy's Ridin' High album is a hard rock guitar masterpiece (at least to me). It's one of those albums that sounds better the louder it's played.

I think it was John Lord who was on TV years ago talking about Tommy, his addiction and how it sometimes adversely affected him on stage. John said that he got drunk/high and passed out, not long before a show. They managed to rouse him for the performance, but he'd passed out with his left arm in a funny position and his head resting on it. When he came to it became apparent he'd trapped the nerve going to his hand, and he couldn't use his fingers! Apparently he had to do the whole show just using bar chords as that's all he could manage. I think despite the tragic substance abuse we can respectfully have a laugh on him for this one!

I used to be besotted with Come Taste the Band. A lot of that was because of Tommy Bolin. He had some really unexpected, intriguing lead lines, like you played in "Owed to G" and it gave his solos tons of atmoshpere and intrigue. I don't think I've ever heard anyone ever play licks like he used to. So much soul and SOOOOOO FUNKY. And I don't even really like funk! One of my all time fav guitarists. Just such a tragedy he passed away when he did. I'm sure that if he had survived the addiction he would have been considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Up there with the likes of Hendrix. Glenn might have had the guitarist counterpart for most of his career, like he should have had. I'm going to have to study this video more later. And Bolin's solo albums. Thanks for the reminder!

Kind of disappointed you didn't go into the bridge of Savannah woman because that's when he really gets the jazzy chord magic going with a C minor 9 to a G 6 to Aminor then a badass move to Bb Maj 7. Tommy got a lot of schooling from a piano player in Zephyr. So while he may not of been a classically train musician he knew alk about Jazz chords their harmony and how to use them.
Also Tommy just like Danny Gatton had elite hearing skills. Also just to further touch on Tommy's jazz side if you look at his solos like on Quadrant 4 or on Savannah woman he's using jazzy sounding target notes to land on
I'm hearing both Dorian modes and mixolydian and occasionally playing outside the diatonic scale with flat 5s and flat 9s.
He was by no means an ignorant player he had some guitar ninja in him!
