    After all these years, “Last Wave” is still a beautiful song to end a game on.

      The PC Engine version was better for one reason: the soundtrack. On PC Engine, Passing Breeze is at its normal speed, instead of the sped-up version we hear here.

    • @leandrocerencio
      @leandrocerencio Рік тому

      @@thewingedavenger1007 Passing Breeze has 6 minutes, no speed-up. Every OutRun 1 and 2 songs has around 6 minutes. It is 1st party title. I have Sega Saturn and Mega Drive versions, the gameplay are identical.

    The amont of pointless whine in the comments. Well, to each their own but for the time it was released, this was the best port of Outrun with the best music too. The soundtrack is better than the PC Engine port and muuuch better than the crappy Amiga, ST or any other computer ports.

      This was well before the System16 board! (about 3 years) The arcade board has 2 x 68000 chips and a very expensive 'custom' Yamaha sound module. Sega threw the hardware as these games were a cash cow for them. I would've loved the same spec in a Megadrive but would you pay $1000 for it?

    • @thewingedavenger1007

      The PC Engine version of the soundtrack is better. The Genesis version speeds up the best track, Passing Breeze. It's like listening to your favorite Beatles song at double the speed.

    Thanks for uploading this! I actually prefer this soundtrack over the arcade version, and the only other soundtrack video on UA-cam was some one with pretty bad sound emulation (everything was kinda harsh).

    Hate to admit it. But the genesis soundtrack is kick'n compared to the arcade. The drums are more dance while original arcade is more island. Plus we got Step On Beat. That doesnt mean it's better quality tho. Arcade is lil softer more real sounding.

      sonikku1011 I got one of the cheap Chinese clones (shh, don't tell anyone). I do plan on splashing out on a Mega Everdrive eventually (I really like the idea of a RAM cart instead a flash cart) or maybe even another dev oriented cart.

    • @sonikku1011
      @sonikku1011 8 років тому +1

      DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL Nothing wrong with getting one of those for now. :P It's a pretty good cheap alternative I've heard. Many people in the Sega Retro Gamers group on Facebook even said they invested in getting one of the cheap clones and they haven't had any issues with it. But the Mega Everdrive is epic, it may be worth a pretty penny but it's really worth getting one.

    I was not too keen on this port some time ago, but now I think it's good for what it is, the music is great, the gameplay is solid considering the control limitations, and the graphics and framerate aren't bad given the limited hardware.
    "Last wave" could've been a bit better/closer to the original though, even the PCE version did it better.

    It's too bad so few companies took the time to get the most out of the Genesis sound hardware.

    • @heilong79
      @heilong79 8 років тому +4

      They did, its just American companies that didnt.

    • @heilong79
      @heilong79 8 років тому +3

      Well as I am sure DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL knows, they were given different toolkit and sound drivers than what the Japanese used so many American games sound like farts.

    • @DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL
      @DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL  8 років тому +14

      The major part of this is the bigger issue that Sega of Japan and Sega of America weren't really all that close. There aren't a lot of scenarios where commissioning a completely new sound engine and tools makes sense unless the Japanese weren't forthcoming about what tools and code they had. The only "American" games that use SMPS for example are Sonic 2/3 and they are more joint productions than American games.
      There is also the fact that once a sound engine like GEMS becomes what their developer tech support understands, furnishes, and supports, it sort of becomes a standard. There is also the reality that video games are made for profit and sometimes it's better to get games out the door than spend weeks or months tweaking or optimizing a sound engine.
      But what I am getting at is the very real possibility that American developers simply didn't have the level of support or documentation Japanese developers had. Look at how long Genesis emulators took to get decent--since most of them are developed by western developers, documentation was really scarce and only now is the Genesis well understood. I imagine your average hobbyist ROM hacker or homebrew coder has a better understanding of MD hardware than many professional programmers of the day did.

    • @DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL
      @DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL  8 років тому +7

      ***** There's some truth in that. Acclaim was pretty soulless and EA probably didn't care if their hockey or Madden game had good sound or not. A lot of people (and myself) do like, for example, the music in the Road Rash series. Those people probably cared a little more about the game they were creating though, and in that case it's a known fact that EA didn't have the technical knowledge of Genesis/MD hardware that licensed developers had at the time as their knowledge was mostly from reverse engineering. I guess that sort of proves your point though; they had gaps in their technical knowledge and still produced some good games.

    • @797gaming
      @797gaming 4 роки тому +1

      @ben owen How the hell is Road Rash III's soundtrack bad?! It's by the same composer of Urban Strike, which both sounded great.
      FIFA International Soccer has one of my favorite intro themes, and just listen to Skitchin'!!
      As for Dark Castle, that game was just shit. Possibly the worst Genesis game out there too.

    Can you give exact details on your process on recording from the original hardware? It's very nice to have Genesis accurate soundtracks out there. Also, sorry to bug you about this again, but do you ever plan on uploading all of your recordings someplace like MEGA?

    • @DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL
      @DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL  8 років тому +15

      Most of my recordings are made by simply playing back from the sound test of a game but if it doesn't have one I will either use a VGM replayer ROM or hack the sound data out of the game and put it into a homebrew ROM that plays it back for me. I usually use a flash cartridge, but if I own the game I will use that. I record into my aging Ubuntu Linux computer, using a modified Genesis 2 that has RCA "phono" jacks on the back. I run a cable from it to my soundcard's unbalanced RCA input (ESI Juli@ PCI) at 44.1khz, 24bit. I record directly into Audacity and edit songs individually (basic edits, trim and fade only). I usually use project2612's VGMs for a guideline as to how long an individual piece of music is. I save all the music separately and then use SoX to combine and normalize them to -0.3dB, and to dither down to 16 bit and convert to FLAC. I go google image search some cover art, then use imagemagick (the 'convert' utility in particular) to convert it to a properly sized still to encode into the video. I use ffmpeg for that, to encode a still image and AAC audio at 384k. As far as MEGA I don't have every recording I've ever made but I have made more of an effort to keep them around. I am kicking around the idea of doing "bootleg" releases of game soundtracks I think haven't been appreciated as much though and I would probably put those on MEGA.

      @DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL  8 років тому +4

      agreed, it doesn't have the same impact without the arcade drums. Plus it's weird that Last Wave sounds a little different when there's probably no real technical reason for it
