Jumping out of an elevator that isn't lined up with the floor is actually very dangerous, it is liable to lurch at any moment especially as the load changes. When the elevator is at a floor there are interlocks that engage that prevent it from moving, those interlocks can't engage if the elevator isn't lined up with the floor (you can sometimes feel the interlock engage when the elevator is slightly off alignment because the interlock will force it into alignment).
Lifts have weight limits, that elevator still tried to do its job but couldn't so did its other job of stopping so many flesh bags from dropping and turning into chunky salsa
