If you are still local you will want to attend the O&WRHS Middletown RR day in July, we will have a lot more of this stuff.

Nice, my family moved to Orange County in 1971. The Erie just about went through my backyard on the way from Greycourt to Newburgh, and I remember the Erie trains going through Monroe, Chester, Goshen, New Hampton and Middletown. Thanks for sharing

I like how the scene at Suffern connects past with present. I did passenger surveys on the line right before the route shifted up to the Graham line in the earliest days of Metro-North involvement with the Port Jervis Line service. I never had a clear picture in my head of what the service looked like during the late Erie-Lackawanna era.

I was born 9 years after this video was shot. I live in this area, and always try to envision what these lines looked like. Now it's just rail trails, looking at tree lines on google earth to imagine what the past looked like. This video was amazing! I know the exact spot the "east of middletown" shot was taken... standing at the Ryerson Rd. crossing, looking under I-84, with Middletown in the background. It's fasinating how different it looks today.

Thanks for the comment, if you haven’t done so please like and subscribe. I was born in 71 and actually rode from Chester to Hoboken several times. I remember going to Goshen and Middletown and seeing what was left. I pass the Ryerson road crossing spot daily, but it’s not the same. More stuff to come in the future.

@@milepost71nodefects92Awesome. I live near the Chester station and from what I understand it had been left to decay during the Conrail years.

Great footage.Former Erie E8 now in the DL&W inspired new paint scheme. These may not have been the best time for the railroad, but it was great for those of us that used the trains.

Was this the tail end of EL passenger just before Amtrak? Or was this commuter service?

Commuter service, now Metro-North, with NJT equipment and crews. The old main in this video between Harriman and Otisville through Middletown is gone, as trains were routed to the old Graham Line.

New push-pulls in the background towards the end of the video.

    On the 52-second mark sloatsburg
Neat to see the old black-faced white letter crossbuck tuxedo
I know they had him that far east I thought they mainly cut off around the Midwest last time I remember seeing them back in the 60s and 70s.
A different note is this line still there or is it had been abandoned and torn-up years ago or is it still used?

The line between Middletown and Harriman was abandoned. Goshen Chester and Monroe lost service and Middletown and Harriman stations were relocated
